NBC/WSJ poll highlights Obama's economic vulnerabilities

By Michael O'Brien, msnbc.com

?

President Barack Obama?s most glaring vulnerabilities this election cycle are laid bare in the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, in which Americans say the incumbent commander in chief has either made no impact on pocketbook issues ? or even made them worse.

More respondents said Obama made worse the budget deficit (47 percent), health care (43 percent), and the partisan divide in politics (39 percent) than those who said the president had improved ? or at least made no difference ? upon them during his first term in office.

Those are numbers that help explain the Romney campaign?s almost singular focus on the economy in prosecuting his case against Obama.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd shares details from the latest NBC News/WSJ poll.

?What these polls are telling us is that we have a close race, and the number one issue on people's mind is the economy,? said an adviser to the former Massachusetts governor. ?If you look at the president's performance on that No. 1 issue, he's getting failing grades across the board.?

Obama leads big with Latinos

There are issues on which the president has an advantage ? Americans view Obama as having improved the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. auto industry, and protections for the middle class. And more respondents (32 percent) in the NBC/WSJ poll said they?re quite or extremely confident that the Democrat?s policies would improve the economy than the 19 percent who said the same for his Republican rival.

But Obama faces serious and stubborn frustration toward his handling of the economy. The number of Americans who said they expect the economy to improve over the next year dipped slightly, and 50 percent of poll-takers said that last month?s jobs report ? which showed the economy added 115,000 jobs in April ? was no reason for optimism.

Romney?s challenge, though, lies in convincing voters that he would represent an improvement over Obama.

First Thoughts: Economic pessimism is back

The new poll data show that the private sector resume that Romney frequently cites on the campaign trail is an asset, especially as it relates to how voters expect the Bain Capital co-founder to turn around the economy and close the budget deficit.

It also explains why the Obama campaign has launched a full-fledged attack on Romney?s business experience, in hopes of diminishing his advantage ? for now ? versus the president on those pocketbook issues.

?It depends how credible of a messenger Romney really is. Do people think that his work at Bain made life better for the average people?? said former Texas Rep. Martin Frost, a veteran Democratic campaigner. ?The public probably doesn't know too much about Romney's record in the private sector, but my bet is they'll know a whole lot more by the end of the election.?

Thirty-five percent of Americans said Romney?s private sector career at Bain Capital is a major advantage in improving job creation; another 24 percent said it?s a minor advantage. A combined 59 percent said Romney?s background was an advantage in working to reduce the federal budget deficit.

The latest Wall Street Journal/Washington Post poll shows that presidential candidate Mitt Romney's biggest strength is his business background, which is viewed as a key advantage to improving the economy. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

(Voters? impression of Romney?s business background is still positive, though less so, when it comes to ensuring corporations pay their fair share of taxes, protecting workers? rights, and enforcing environmental standards for businesses.)

The data lay the groundwork for the summertime campaign battles, which Obama himself helped launch this week, when he openly called into question Romney?s qualifications to be president.

NBC/WSJ poll: Obama, Romney locked in tight contest

"The reason this is relevant to the campaign is because my opponent, Gov. Romney, his main calling card for why he thinks he should be president is his business expertise," Obama said at a press conference in Chicago. "And when you?re president, as opposed to the head of a private equity firm, then your job is not simply to maximize profits.? Your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot."

Obama?s aggressive tack is directed toward erasing Romney?s advantage when it comes to the economy, what may prove to be the trump card should the former Massachusetts governor end up winning in November. For instance, 41 percent of poll respondents said they?re ?not at all? confident that Obama has the right policies to improve the economy (36 percent said the same for Romney).

?What the Obama campaign wants to do is to continue focusing on issues that are not important to the overall anxieties that they have in terms of the economy right now,? said the Romney adviser. ?They want to offer a distorted version of the governor?s business background, and we see it as an opportunity to remind the American people of the importance of free enterprise.?

But at the same time, more Americans, 32 percent, said that they?re quite or very confident in Obama?s proposals (versus 19 percent who said that of Romney). Four in 10 voters said they?re ?somewhat confident? in Romney?s proposals, a number that could prove fluid as the president campaign works to define ?Romney Economics? for the general public.

Those variables could all be shaken by factors outside of either campaign?s control, though. Frost expressed particular worry about the effect of a European backslide on the U.S. stock market ? a tangible symbol that could temper voters? thoughts toward Obama. ?The economic situation is still pretty volatile. The numbers could coming out of Europe could really put a damper on things,? he said. ?To the extent the stock market reacts adversely, that's a problem. If the stock market just kind of muddles through, it doesn't really affect the average person.?

After 36 Marathons, One Radio Goes Silent - NYTimes.com

For each of the 36 years that the New York City Marathon has existed as a five-borough race, Steve Mendelsohn could be found in the lead vehicle with the race director, cruising along with the lead male runner and relaying messages on his ham radio.

But in November, Mr. Mendelsohn will not be there. He died Wednesday morning of pancreatic cancer at his home in Dumont, N.J., said his wife, Heidi. He was 67.

As the marathon?s longtime communications director, Mr. Mendelsohn was in charge of the roughly 400 ham radio operators who provide the communications system for the race.

Mr. Mendelsohn may not have been a household name in the running world, but he was well known to the many race officials and volunteers.

He would start his work each summer, recruiting and organizing radio operators from across the country to be deployed along the racecourse to help with communications and to step in if cellphones failed. He would spend his weekends driving parts of the course to test radio coverage.

Mr. Mendelsohn put together the communications system in the early years of the marathon, when ham radios were needed to relay information about mishaps and the leaders as the race unfolded. He would program the hand-held radios and distribute them to operators who would shadow officials and keep them in radio contact. The operators would also provide information to medical personnel and others about runners who had dropped out or had been injured.

I met Mr. Mendelsohn shortly before the marathon last fall. As we walked around the finish area in Central Park, he spotted the statue of Fred Lebow, the marathon?s charismatic co-founder and longtime director.

Mr. Mendelsohn was alongside Mr. Lebow as he built the race over the years. And he watched him fight brain cancer after the disease was diagnosed in 1990. Mr. Lebow died in 1994. Mr. Mendelsohn walked up to the statue, gave it a loving pat and repeated the mantra ? ?Another year, my friend? ? that they would greet each other with every year when reuniting for the race.

Mr. Mendelsohn confided then that the 2011 marathon would be his most meaningful one ? simply because he had lived to see it. He said he was dying of cancer, having learned the diagnosis in January 2011 and been told that he most likely had only a few months to live.

?He felt he had to do at least one more for Fred,? Ms. Mendelsohn said in an interview on Wednesday.

In November, Mr. Mendelsohn had been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and he was down to 110 pounds and had trouble walking. He said he felt he had already outlived the prognosis. He attributed this to his enthusiasm about working another marathon and the support of fellow radio enthusiasts.

?All my ham radio guys are praying for me, and I feel that energy,? he said at the time.

He said he knew his days were numbered. He said he would use the 2012 marathon ?as the hope for another year.? As it turned out, Mr. Mendelsohn wound up working several other races before he died, including a Miami marathon in January and a half-marathon and a triathlon.

?We would have lost him a year ago if it weren?t for him being able to keep working the races ? he just loved the adrenaline,? Ms. Mendelsohn said.

?He was in no shape to do it, but he was determined to work them anyway, because he lived for these races,? she said. ?No matter what he felt like, he just never missed anything. His attitude was, ?As long as I am physically able, I?m just going to go out and do it.??

Mr. Mendelsohn grew up in Amityville, N.Y., and built his own ham radio at age 14. He served as a cryptologist in the Navy and then worked in radio and television for CBS and ABC as a communications technician, helping to design the mobile production trucks for large news and sports events, including ?Monday Night Football.?

He also served for more than a dozen years as the game-day frequency coordinator for the Jets, making sure the coaches? headsets and walkie-talkies worked. Ms. Mendelsohn said Rex Ryan, the head coach, and Mark Sanchez, the starting quarterback, and other team members visited him at home while he was sick.

Mr. Mendelsohn?s work with the marathon began in 1975, when the marathon needed a city-mandated communications system as it prepared to expand beyond Manhattan, he said. Mr. Lebow had gone to a meeting of ham radio operators and met Mr. Mendelsohn, who recruited 30 volunteers to take positions along the course for the 1976 race.

?The Police Department?s citywide system couldn?t do it, so ham radios became the main communication to span the city? for the race, he said.

Mr. Mendelsohn was always leery of cellphone coverage, with thousands of spectators simultaneously using their phones near the finish line.

In November, he said he had surprised his doctors by surviving a case of sarcoidosis, a lymphatic system disease, five years earlier. He called his work on the marathons crucial to his survival.

?The enormous energy, like you feel at the starting line, gives me the power to stay alive,? he said.

The Web?s Copyright Conundrum

For publishers and content creators, Tumblr exists at the heart of one of the Web?s great dilemmas. On the one hand, the micro-blogging social network can act as force-multiplier that expands the reach of content, in the same way that aggregator sites and Facebook and Twitter do. But that?s offset by the reality that copyrighted material can be posted without credit or financial benefit to the original publisher.

Boehner vows another showdown over debt and taxes

House Speaker John Boehner set the stage Tuesday for another tense, partisan showdown over tax and spending policy later this year, as he vowed to insist on big spending cuts before he?ll agree to a new debt ceiling ? much like last summer?s debt showdown debacle ? and he also promised a vote before November?s elections on whether to prevent Bush-era tax cuts from expiring at year?s end, as scheduled.

Boehner?s address to a Washington budget forum had chilling echoes of the 2011 clash over increasing the debt ceiling, a weeks-long standoff between the Obama White House and Republicans in the House of Representatives that roiled financial markets, led to a downgrade of federal credit and nearly forced much of the government to close.

Another vote on raising the debt ceiling is expected later this year, probably after the Nov. 6 elections. Boehner on Tuesday pledged to make it an ?action-forcing event in a town that has become infamous for inaction. . . . When the time comes, I will again insist on my simple principle of cuts and reforms greater than the debt limit increase. This is the only avenue I see right now to force the elected leadership of this country to solve our structural fiscal imbalance.?

The Ohio Republican also pledged to fight to extend Bush-era tax cuts, now set to expire at the end of this year, and called on President Barack Obama to join him. ?If there?s one action-forcing event that trumps all the rest ? even the debt limit ? it?s presidential leadership,? Boehner said.

Democrats scoffed.

?Republicans are once again choosing millionaires over the middle class and Speaker Boehner is threatening to take our nation into another manufactured crisis that will harm America?s families,? said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Added Senate Democratic Policy Committee Chairman Charles Schumer of New York, ?The last thing the country needs is a rerun of last summer?s debacle that nearly brought down our economy.?

The White House was somewhat more measured.

"Everyone except for elected members of Congress, the Republican Party, agrees with that general proposition that we need to take a balanced approach to our deficit and debt challenges," said spokesman Jay Carney. ?A balanced approach? to deficit reduction is Democratic shorthand for a package including tax increases as well as spending cuts.

Boehner flatly rejected higher taxes.

?Any sudden tax hike would hurt our economy, so this fall ? before the election ? the House of Representatives will vote to stop the largest tax increase in American history,? Boehner said, referring to the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts. Since the House has a 242-190 GOP majority, the cuts are sure to pass. But they?re likely to go nowhere in the Senate, where Democrats control 53 of the 100 seats.

President Obama and House Republicans last summer engaged in weeks of negotiations over cutting spending and increasing revenues. They ultimately agreed to raise the debt ceiling in stages and to impose automatic spending cuts, set to begin taking effect in January. The first round will total about $110 billion next year, half from defense and half from domestic programs.

More crucial to the fate of the debt are the Bush-era tax cuts, which have lowered income tax rates for the past 12 years and which will expire at the end of 2012. So will a host of other tax breaks, including the 2 percent cut in the Social Security payroll tax. Extending the Bush-era tax cuts would cost roughly $3.8 trillion over 10 years, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

How to plan the perfect baby shower

Perfect planning

Pick a theme for the shower. Ideally the theme matches the baby?s room d?cor, name or colors selected by the parents-to-be.

Provide as much information as you can on the invites?? without being too wordy. Or encourage guests to contact you with any questions about gifts, directions, etc.

Take into consideration the pregnant mom?s cravings, food allergies or personal preferences of guests and always make sure you offer lots of water.

A thank you from the mom and baby is always a nice touch, but you don?t have to go overboard. A wrapped cookie with personalized message will do just fine.

Tip

It?s nice to plan a baby shower with multiple people for financial reasons, but try to limit the amount of people involved to avoid potential conflicts.

Baby shower themes and decor ideas >>

Location, location

Think outside the box when it comes to picking a location. A baby shower doesn?t have to take place at a friend or family member's home. Think about where the mom-to-be likes to frequent:

  • The pregnant mom?s favorite restaurant.
  • A restaurant that serves all the foods she craves.
  • A spa that offers pregnancy massages (go in with the guests to treat the mom-to-be!)
  • A resort ballroom or reception area.
  • A rooftop bar?? during the day.

Baby shower activities

The popular ?decorate a onesie? craft is always good because onesies are a practical gift.

Tip: Provide guests with stencils to help out the non-artists of the group.

It?s always nice to leave the mom and baby with something personalized and practical? Here's another creative idea for a baby shower activity.

Tip: String twine or ribbon across a wall with clothespins nearby. When the guests finish decorating their quilt square, have them hang the squares from the line to display and dry.

Baby shower quilt

  • Enlist the help of a seamstress?? or if someone planning or attending the shower can sew, even better!
  • If there?s a theme for the quilt, print up an explanation and display it in a simple picture frame next to the craft project.
  • Set out a variety of fabric markers and encourage the guests to decorate a quilt square.
  • After the baby shower, sew the quilt together.

Keepsake gifts for baby

Keepsake gifts are a popular trend for baby showers, especially if the parents skip the baby registry route.

Book for Baby: Ask the guests to bring a book for the new baby with a personal message written inside.

Parenting quotes: Compile advice and quotes from party attendees to help comfort, support and make the new parents laugh. Provide the guests with a journal at the shower, but inform them about the idea ahead of time so they have some time to think about what they want to write.

The finishing touches

Always think about how you can help the mom-to-be. Create less work and more time for her to relax, enjoy and relish in the love and support from her friends and family.

Arrange a table complete with envelopes near the exit of the shower. Have guests write their name and address on the envelopes so the mom-to-be can write her thank you cards and send them off. If you really want to be helpful, place stamps on the envelopes, too!

In addition to helping the mom-to-be get the gifts to her home, offer to stay after the shower to help the parents assemble any baby gifts and dispose of trash or recycle boxes.

Stream TV finds a manufacturing partner in Pegatron for glasses-free 3D displays

We've been hearing about (and even seeing) Stream TV's Ultra-D autostereoscopic 3D chops for a while now, but so far there hasn't been any actual hardware to show for it. That could change soon, since the company is announcing OEM Pegatron as a manufacturing partner today. Ultra-D's claim to fame is the ability to bring clear 3D to displays of varying sizes, from portables to HDTVs with no loss of quality as well as SeeCube 2D-to-3D conversion technology. Pegatron builds devices for more recognizable names like Apple, Asus, Toshiba and others, and once they're ready to build products around the tech it should be able to put them together at more affordable prices than we've seen for glasses-free 3D hardware so far. CEO of Stream TV Mathu Rajan says this partnership will help it bring Ultra-D products to customers this year, so it might be time to clear out some space next to that 3DS and Evo 3D. We'll be convinced when we have Ultra-D hardware in our own hands, but until then you can check out the full press release after the break.

'Survivor: One World': How The Women Won

'The guys — they had no unity,' fourth-place finisher Christina Cha tells MTV News of scoring show's first ever all-girl finale.
By Josh Wigler

Kim Spradlin
Photo: MTV News

Kim Spradlin isn't the only "Survivor: One World" winner. OK, technically she is — that cool $1 million is firmly in her bank account — but the season's four finalists can also take comfort in knowing that they made "Survivor" history together: For the first time in 24 seasons, there was not a single man left standing among the final five contestants.

The feat is all the more impressive considering where the women began. At the outset of "One World," the two tribes were separated on gender lines, with the men of Manono showcasing their clear physical advantage with two early immunity wins. It certainly didn't help that the women of Salani were turning on each other, with in-fighting dominating much of their air time in the season's earliest episodes.

Eventually, the women pulled themselves together to stage one of the most impressive comebacks in "Survivor" history, knocking five men out in a row and cutting out the final male — the unforgettable Tarzan — one vote later. So after such a rocky start, how did Salani find the strength to rally together and get rid of the men?

"I think it's because we had a rocky start, I believe that's why we ended up with five women at the end," Kim told MTV News at the "One World" finale on Sunday night. "We had to learn to trust each other. We really had to get each other's backs and become a group."

"There was a day when we all just stood around. We held each other's hands. We were like, 'You know what? We can do this,' " third-place finisher Chelsea Meissner said. "I think it was that first challenge we won against the guys, where they were really ahead of us and we came out of nowhere and won it. We all hugged and it was that moment where we realized, 'We can do this. We can so do this.' "

Christina Cha, who finished the season in fourth place, credited the women's success to the men's willingness to cannibalize each other. "That was what I noticed about the guys — they had no unity," she said. "The guys weren't united from day one."

Another factor, according to runner-up Sabrina Thompson: The men simply were not needed. "You don't need a man in this game to come get [you] fire, to do this or do that," she said. "Once we started winning challenges, we knew we could do this."

In a season dominated by precisely one person, one would think that the plan to get rid of all of the men stemmed from winner Kim. But one of her fellow finalists remembers things differently.

"You know what? I'm going to take credit for this one Kim, OK?" fifth-place finisher Alicia Rosa weighed in, recalling the fall of the men with the same firecracker glee that made her such a memorable competitor all year long. "I [outlined] who the five girls were, from the beginning, and that we were going to wipe [the men] off the island. That, to me, was my biggest dream come true, to do that. I always said that on the island: 'We have to do this. We have to do this. Do not play with those men. It is not going to happen! '"

Not to say that the self-proclaimed mastermind of the men's demise isn't without some regrets.

"I will say I wish Matt had used a little bit more of his Southern charm. Maybe he would've lasted a little bit longer," Alicia laughed. "He was really nice to look at!"

Mozilla and Google ARMwrestle Microsoft

Mozilla and Google are challenging Microsoft's decision to shut out all browsers other than Internet Explorer from Windows 8 devices that use ARM processors. This restricts user choice, reduces competition, chills innovation, and might have antitrust implications, among other bad things, Mozilla general counsel Harvey Anderson asserted.

Growing like gangbusters, Turkey says Western economies need 'serious reforms'

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan warned Friday that the US and Europe were not doing enough to resolve the core causes of the global economic slowdown.

The global economy remains deep in crisis and Europe and the United States are doing little to resolve its core causes, Deputy Turkish Prime Minister Ali Babacan warned Friday.

Mr. Babacan, a former foreign minister and Turkey?s point-man for economic policy, said neither the US nor the eurozone countries have yet to deal with the underlying causes of the global economic slowdown: a weak financial sector, weak corporate balance sheets, risky public financial positions.?

Speaking at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, Babacan warned that this year will be a year of reckoning for the European Union, and he pointed to the recent collapse of the Dutch government over the budget austerity measures as a harbinger for Europe?s coming fiscal battles.?

?2012 will be test year for European countries,? he said. ?2013 will be test year for American economy. After the elections [the new administration] will find very difficult decisions on the table right away. There has to be serious fiscal adjustment and a medium term plan to deal with the deficit. So far, there is no credible plan to deal with deficit.?

Babacan said developed countries need to undertake serious structural changes including reforming social security and labor markets: ?It is absolutely necessary for serious reforms, especially in many European countries, absolutely necessary and urgent.?

Babacan is a founding member of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan?s Justice and Development Party and considered a leading member of the ?Neo-Ottomanism? movement, moving Turkey?s foreign policy away from a predominantly Western focus to integration and activism in its immediate neighborhood ??the territories of the former Ottoman Empire.

Babacan contrasted the Western economic turmoil, with Turkey?s booming economy which he said grew at 9.2 percent growth rate in 2010, and 8.5 percent in 2011.

?We entered this crisis with a strong banking system and strong public financial structure. During the crisis when many countries were asking for fiscal stimulus programs.? We followed a very different route. We did just the opposite. We announced fiscal consolidation program. And we overperformed,? he said.

He said Turkey?s economy was far more open than many European countries, which had made Turkish companies more dynamic and more competitive in global markets. And he argued that Turkish growth was more sustainable because he said it didn?t come on the back of government spending, but rather private sector growth.

In the coming years, he said, ?We will have lower growth ??though better than everywhere else in Europe ??but slower than before. Growth is high, but it?s also sustainable growth.?

?Tight fiscal policies will continue, in good days or in bad days,? he said, ?but we don?t believe in economic growth through public spending.?

Islam, democracy, and capitalism

Turkey has shown how Islam and democracy and capitalism can cooexist peacefully, Babacan said.?

?When people observe a functioning example, people are more encouraged to ask for more in their own countries,? he said. ?We have been talking with leaders: Change is coming, you can no longer have a closed regime with an open society ??satellites, social media, the Internet ??you have this kind, this kind of society moving forward and you are running this closed regime, this is not sustainable, this cannot continue.?

?We have advised these leaders to lead this change, or you will be pushed by change anyway,? he said. ?

Babacan addressed several of the long-running disputes in the region, such as the Israeli-Palestinian impasse, the status of the split island of Cyprus, and the violence in neighboring Syria. He said Turkey was strongly supportive of the six-point peace plan pushed by former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, but he said Turkey was strongly against any sort of military intervention or sending weapons to the embattled Syrian opposition forces.

He also said the Syrian opposition is coalescing into a viable alternative to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

?We need to see visible, verifiable, and indisputable change in the country,? he said. ?The primary responsibility to end the violence will rest with the Syrian regime.?
