Paes confirms participation in London Olympics

New Delhi: Leander Paes on Friday confirmed that he will play in London Olympics and has agreed to pair with any team the All India Tennis Association (AITA) chooses.

"It is my dream to be part of my sixth Olympics and I will not let petty politics come in the way of hard work and good tennis," Paes said. Moreover the 1996 bronze medal winner stated that he won't to react to anything said earlier.

Paes confirmation to CNN-IBN comes after three days Sania Mirza wrote a letter showing her displeasure regarding the ongoing tennis fiasco.

Paes said despite being left disheartened he is focussed on playing sport and not politics.

Leander Paes confirms participation in London Olympics

The 39-year-old had threatened to withdraw from the Olympics despite being India' number one doubles player after being paired with a much lower-ranked Vishnu Vardhan for the big event. Paes' partners of choice -- Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna -- refused to combine with him and insisted on being sent as a team themselves.

On Sania's outburst, Paes refused any direct comment, saying, "Every Olympics has some nonsense coming in with it."

"I know how much hard work goes into what I do. (Either) people choose to respect it, which I'm very lucky that India does, (or) people choose to disrespect. That's their problem, not mine," Paes said.

Paes, set to make a record sixth Olympic appearance, said he would look to help Vardhan, who would be making Games' debut in London.

"I don't even know if he has grass-court shoes. So it's a bit of a tough one. But he's a really good kid, I'm happy to play with him.

"Whatever the obstacles are, which I see are going to be many -- he's never been to Wimbledon before -- whatever I can do as an experienced professional athlete to help my partners out, I do," he said.

Kentucky Speedway races provide more jobs, business

Along with NASCAR races and the crowds of fans they attract, the Kentucky Speedway brings jobs and business to Sparta.

The BP station and market across the street from the Kentucky Speedway upgrades from a normal staff of one or two on duty to nine or?10 during racing days. The BP?sees high?demand for gas, ice, earplugs, and food during events like the NASCAR Sprint Cup race set for this weekend.

Bea Waltz, a store employee who only works on racing days, said business was much greater than usual during last year's Kentucky Speedway races.

"We did quadruple the sales on race week then we had all year long," she said.

The speedway itself provides many jobs, especially with changes this year intended to improve traffic and parking.

Denny Hoerlein of?Baker Construction said that the speedway races have provided work for the company.

"We had a project with the speedway with the grandstands last year, and we've been down here with a small crew ever since," he said.

However, the races have not had a long-term economic impact on Warsaw, a town five miles away.

Kelly Warwick, the editor of the Gallatin County News, said the economic benefits of the Kentucky Speedway have not spilled over to Warsaw.

"In Warsaw, people say they don't see much from it," she said. "They feel people go to the track, stay at the track and leave when last race is over and go home."

GEDI chip sorts prostate cancer cells
(Nanowerk News) The future of prostate cancer therapy may lie in a tiny, "sticky" silicon chip dubbed GEDI (Geometrically Enhanced Differential Immunocapture, pronounced like the "Star Wars" forces of good) that can identify and collect cancer cells from a patient's bloodstream.
A team of researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and Cornell's College of Engineering in Ithaca has built the chip into a device that captures an unprecedentedly high concentration of rare cancer cells from metastatic prostate cancer patients for a quick, noninvasive analysis to determine the efficacy of the patients' current chemotherapy. The ability to collect a relatively pure sample of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) may also enable research to better understand the biology of metastasis and develop new treatments, the researchers said.
the GEDI device
The "sticky" square patch (middle) of the GEDI device contains the purest collection of circulating tumor cells in the blood. The rest of the blood cells are discarded in the capsule.
Their work is described in a paper in the April 2012 issue of the journal PLoS ONE ("Functional Characterization of Circulating Tumor Cells with a Prostate-Cancer-Specific Microfluidic Device"), and was announced in a press conference at Weill by Brian Kirby, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; David Nanus, M.D., the Mark W. Pasmantier Professor of Hematology and Oncology in Medicine; and Evi Giannakakou, associate professor of pharmacology. The team includes 12 other researchers from both campuses.
Metastatic cancer is cancer that has spread from the place where it first started -- in this case, the prostate -- to another place in the body, most commonly the lungs, bones and liver. Metastasis accounts for the majority of cancer-related deaths.
"We need to be able to match the drug to the patient and the tumor," said Nanus. But tumor cells habitually mutate and develop a resistance to a previously effective therapy. In the case of prostate cancer, three drugs are in common use, but the most effective one varies with the patient and the particular cancer.
Metastasis is believed to be caused by cells that detach from the primary prostate tumor, circulate in the bloodstream and seed new tumors. Extensive clinical research shows that a reliable CTC count is a strong predictor of overall survival in metastatic prostate cancer patients. However, since the incidence of CTCs can be very small -- one CTC per 100 million blood cells -- pure CTC capture is difficult.
"This really is a needle in a haystack," Kirby emphasized.
On the GEDI chip, blood flows through an array of posts just a few millionths of a meter in diameter, coated with antibodies that stick to cancer cells
On the GEDI chip, blood flows through an array of posts just a few millionths of a meter in diameter, coated with antibodies that stick to cancer cells. Each row of posts is offset from the one before by a distance that causes the larger cancer cells to collide with them - and stick on - more often, while other cells in the blood flow smoothly past
Cell-capture devices now in use contain antibodies that bind to an antigen found on the surface of nearly all malignant prostate cancer cells. But these antibodies also bind to other cells in the bloodstream and can collect a highly impure sample.
On the GEDI chip, a milliliter (mL, one-thousandth of a liter) of blood is pumped through a nanoscale channel filled with tiny posts just a few microns (millionths of a meter) in diameter, coated with antibodies. Successive rows of posts are offset in a carefully calculated way so that only cells larger than 15 microns will collide with the posts and stick to them, while most smaller cells flow smoothly around them.
"Most cancer cells are bigger and more rigid than normal cells, so it's about tricking these cancer cells into colliding with the sticky walls," Kirby explained.
After the test the chip is removed from the device and the captured cells extracted for analysis. In an experiment with a blood sample containing 200 mL of CTCs and 5 billion blood cells, the device captured a whopping 170mL of CTCs and only 91mL of irrelevant blood cells.
The GEDI device is scheduled to go into clinical trial this year. Meanwhile, the researchers are actively working on detectors for breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers.
The research is one of several joint Ithaca-New York City projects associated with the Cornell Center for Microenvironment and Metastasis, a $13 million National Institutes of Health-funded Physical Sciences-Oncology Center created to use physical techniques and processes to improve understanding and care of metastatic cancer in patients.

Gay Hate Crime In Hancock Park, LA: Homeless Man Beaten After Saying He Was Gay And Had AIDS

A gay homeless man was severely beaten near Hancock Park early Friday morning after he told his attacker that he was gay, homeless and had AIDS, as first reported by the LA Weekly.

The suspect, a white male, called the victim anti-gay discriminatory names and proceeded to "beat him up pretty bad with his hands and feet," Richard French of the Los Angeles Police Department told The Huffington Post. Police are investigating the case as a gay hate crime.

The victim, a white male in his mid-30s, collapsed and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The alleged hate crime took place just before 1 a.m. on the sidewalk of the 100 block of N. Mansfield Avenue.

Another suspected gay hate crime took place in May in Echo Park. Two mid-20s men were called anti-gay slurs and then stabbed, although both survived. The attack was caught on tape, and a $25,000 reward has been offered for information regarding the suspects, who are still at large.

No other information is currently available about the suspect or victim of the Hancock Park beating. Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call the Hollywood Homicide Detectives at 213-972-2967.

This story is developing. Check back for updates.

Apple tablet dominance knocked in UK market

Apple tablet dominance knocked in UK market -

The world and its knackered old dog are preparing their own tablet offerings, with an interesting trend surfacing - software vendors going into hardware for the first time - and that is, inevitably, going to knock Apple's dominance.

According to a YouGov survey, the tablet market in the UK grew enough that nearly 10 percent of the entire population owned one. Of those, more than 70 percent were iPads, and the creatively named New iPad accounted for 11 percent.

That said, the survey revealed Apple's overall share dropped four percentage points from the previous quarter, thanks largely to competition from Samsung - itself enjoying a 7 percent market share. Samsung devices, YouGov said, are beating Apple in certain performance scores, namely in sturdiness and in reliability.

Half of current tablet owners, the majority of those surely iPad owners, are thinking about switching devices, particularly as price factors in as a major concern for iPad owners in particular.

YouGov's consulting director for technology and telecoms, John Gilbert, said that the trend is no great surprise. According to Gilbert, there is no brand on earth that can sustain 90 percent plus market share in an emerging device market. As the older and most financially secure generation is picking up tablets, usually spending over ?400, the lucrative market is too enticing to ignore for the competition.

Gilbert said that Apple set the standard for tablet quality, but Samsung and others are either close to matching or exceeding Cupertino on the price point. "As the tablet market taps into the early and late majority technology users," Gilbert said, "Apple may expect a declining share in a growing market".

As we wrote at ChannelBiz UK, there is plenty of opportunity for vendors and even more so for the contract manufacturers building the products.?

'Gone Girl' Author Gillian Flynn On 'Dark Places' Film Adaptation, Next Book

Originally posted on Word & Film:

Word & Film: There is something about good thrillers ? your latest bestselling novel "Gone Girl" included ? that makes it easy to imagine them on the big screen. Do you find that while writing you keep an eye to how a story would translate to film?

Gillian Flynn: You know, I actually try to do the opposite because I think there is a danger in trying to write a scene that you think would be great in the movie. That said, I am a child of movies; my father was a film professor. I grew up in the dark watching movies all the time with him and then I wrote about film for years at Entertainment Weekly. It?s hard to separate that. So I definitely write kind of filmically. I do write in these sort of scenes, and I do have pet scenes from the book that are so visual to me. In "Gone Girl" there is that giant abandoned mall that?s bankrupt. I didn?t entirely know what was going to happen in the book, but I always knew there was going to be a scene there.

W&F: There is something very post-apocalyptic about that part.

GF: I grew up in the ?80s where there?s a lot of these kind of post-apocalyptic, post-comet, post-whatever it was, so that always captured my imagination a lot as a little kid, that idea of getting access to secret places and being able to roam around where you?re not supposed to.

W&F: Let?s talk about your novel "Dark Places." It was announced earlier this year that Gilles Paquet-Brenner, the director behind ?Sarah?s Key,? will be adapting it to the screen and that Amy Adams is on board to star. Congratulations. How much of a hand will you have in the adaptation process?

GF: Thank you! You know, he has already adapted it; I?ve read the screenplay. It?s absolutely fantastic. I sold it to him and his production company because he was so passionate about it and I just knew he would take good care of it. He has been very involved and has shown it to me in different stages and has gotten my feedback ? and he is very, very faithful to the book. And I don?t know how he was able to condense that book into a screenplay, but he did it. He and I have actually met in Kansas City; he flew in and I showed him the different places that are in the book.

W&F: Do you think that your work as a television and entertainment critic makes it a little bit easier for you to separate yourself personally from the story? In other words, does it make you more willing to see things morph in the adaptation process?

GF: Definitely. I?ve certainly seen very faithful adaptations of books that I loved that didn?t work as movies because they were overly faithful. And I appreciate the attempt to be close to a book but you?ve got to figure out what?s going to be good for the screen. And you have to figure out what scenes to lose. I?m all for whatever transitions the book properly to a movie.

W&F: Though he stayed so faithful to the book, was there anything that he cut that you had a hard time letting go of?

GF: He cut a lot because he had to. But he and I were so much on the same wavelength; after my first conversation with him, I just knew he was the guy to do it. So I didn?t even have to tell him to keep the scenes that I really loved; they were already in there. We are just so similar. He transitions really nicely between the ?80s and the present. ?Sarah?s Key? also does that. One of the things that sold me on it was how elegantly it goes back and forth in time. And how it combines those two stories. He is a very savvy guy and was very honest with me, telling me what did and did not progress the story on film.

W&F: Given your total immersion in entertainment and thrillers, what are your top must-see thriller movies?

GF: Ooh, my top three all time. I love ?Fatal Attraction.? That is one you can always go back to. Oh, and ?Leave Her to Heaven.? It?s sort of an old femme noir with Gene Tierney. It is one of the all-time best, a domestic thriller. And, well, ?The Silence of the Lambs.? That?s one of those movies during which I thought to myself, ?I don?t know if I can watch this whole thing.? And ?Manhunter,? which is the prequel to ?Silence of the Lambs.?

W&F: Great picks. So ? what?s next for you?

GF: The next book ? which I promise I?m going to get started on soon.

W&F: What?s the premise?

GF: I have four or five ideas that just keep floating around and I want to kind of just let one ? [snickering] ? like a beautiful butterfly, let it land somewhere. I?m giving it a little bit of room. When I signed off on Gone Girl this spring, I spent most of April just unwinding and redoing stuff.

W&F: So now it?s time.

GF: It?s time to get back.

Jenny McCarthy Bares All For Sixth Playboy Cover

Actress tells People her latest photos are 'a lot more sophisticated.'
By Kara Warner

Jenny McCarthy on the cover of Playboy magazine
Photo:

Actress/model/advocate Jenny McCarthy has once again set tongues wagging with her sixth appearance on the cover of Playboy. The blonde bombshell is featured on the cover of the July/August issue wearing nothing but some black knee-high tights and coordinating fingerless fishnet gloves. In addition to the cover photo, McCarthy appears in an eight-page photo spread inside the magazine, her seventh pictorial for Playboy.

The 39-year-old told People magazine that this particular photo shoot was particularly special because of the classy factor.

"I'm really proud of it," McCarthy told the magazine. "The pictures are really gorgeous and classy. They could be out of W magazine. They're really elegant. It's probably a lot more sophisticated than a lot of the stuff you'd see of people with their clothes on."

McCarthy made her Playboy debut in 1993 as a centerfold and later went on to be named Playmate of the Month and Playmate of the Year. Shortly thereafter MTV enlisted McCarthy to co-host our popular '90s dating show "Singled Out," which officially put the model/personality on the pop culture map. Entertainment Weekly deemed McCarthy "the Vanna White for the MTV generation," and praised her plucky, outspoken and signature touchy-feely hosting methods.

McCarthy parlayed her fame into multiple roles in television series and film, including two of her own self-titled sitcoms, but in recent years has become more well-known for her work as an activist for autism awareness, on behalf of her own autistic son Evan and the challenges and preconceptions associated with parenting autistic children. McCarthy also made headlines from her four-year relationship with Jim Carrey.

Using Interlock Pavers to Improve Your Home - IdeaMarketers.com

So it's outdoor patio time and your patio is non-existent. You're lacking interlocking bricks. You wish to have your folks over in the backyard, however they keep making a mess of your garden. In case you don't have the correct type of location for a raised solid wood patio, or perhaps prefer the look, interlocking patio stones can bring your backyard garden the style it requires, and keep you from having to fix up your lawn after an exciting celebration.

The initial step to consider within this process is the fact that installing patio stones is simply not an easy task. They're weighty, dirty, the process is time intensive, and also the results may vary on your skill level. Hiring a professional can sometimes be a great choice. To prevent fatigue on your end, maybe those same chums who keep ruining your lawn could visit and be useful for once! Kidding aside, professional help at any phase is advised to get your patio stones looking their best.

First use tent stakes and string to clearly outline areas you want the patio to cover. Get some of your bricks ready at this stage and commence lining them up along the string. Maintain about a Popsicle stick amount of distance between them. Useful tip; have Popsicle ready within your freezer; you can say it's a valuable measuring device for your project. Once you have your bricks arranged (plus your Popsicle eaten) you can begin fine-tuning them so that you have nice clean corners. This will save lots of time in the future since you will not need to cut them.

After you have the outline all set to go it's time to begin excavating. This is the time to get a lot of help. Maybe you could bribe loved ones with Popsicle? Dig down about 4 to 5 inches, and extend the excavated area about an inch beyond the string.

Next use a strong plastic edging around the perimeter. Tent nails may be used to keep it in place, ensure the top of it is line with the un-excavated ground level. Use string now to mark where the ground level is over your excavated area. This should help you keep it level while you install the patio stones.

The next phase is to use concrete, lime, or sand as an under layer. Most veteran installers find that lime is the best and most affordable option. Fill your excavated area with all the lime till it is about even with your string, and even it out with a metal rake. This again is when you're going to need those family as it is time to compact this under layer. A cinder block is effective, a compactor you possibly can rent works best. With this done level off the entire patio area employing a 2X4 piece of wood the length of your patio area.

Now the fun begins and your patio starts to take shape as it's time to place your bricks. Commence closest to your household and exercise. Pound each brick using a rubber mallet to ensure it is in position. Keep placing them until you have put to use each of the full bricks that you can. Employ a simple chisel to chop partial bricks. You should measure twice and cut once, it's a time and frustration saver.

Seeing that your patio is nearly done, it's really a question of filling everything in with sand by spreading it all across your new patio and sweeping it into every one of the cracks. That's it, the hard job is completed now settle-back, take it easy, enjoy the interlocking bricks of your new patio, and have just about any get together you would like with out worrying for your yards well being.

Case-Mate Barely There Case for HTC One X/XL

Case-Mate barely there

The HTC ONE X  is a beautifully designed phone. The polycarbonate body feels like it is tough – but I do worry about scratches and how it would weather a drop.

While it certainly seems well built and sturdy, I would not be very happy if  I dropped the HTC ONE X– either on the face of the device or on the back with the protruding camera.

A good case makes me feel better about the investment in the phone and it is good insurance against the unforeseen. However, these new HTC devices are pretty big and I don’t want to add to the size. The HTC One X is also incredibly thin and I wouldn’t want to compromise that feel either.

Summer of Code could create the next teen Tech Superstar

Nive Jayasekar, a 17 year old teen age girl, designed a Smart App at a local hackathon and walked away with a prize of $10,500.? She was also offered a summer internship at Facebook. Yes, THE Facebook. Facebook Wants To Hire This 17-Year-Old.

How does this happen? How is it that some folks seem to just make something out of noting? Or so it seems.? Where does the inspiration come from. Where is the spark that starts such a flame? Why is it that some folks seem to be on a rocket and others glued to the ground.? Time and experience has opened my eyes and I have come to realize that nothing happens overnight. Nothing.? There are always a set of circumstances, situations, seemingly random and unrelated, that add up lead you to a particular place.

Think about it.? Surely, that wasn?t her first day trying out apps as a lark. She had a variety (and abundance) of resources before her that made this opportunity available to her.? There is always a foundation to success and it starts at home.? This young woman?s road to being offered a summer internship at Facebook started a while back. And if you read the story very closely you see hints to her arrival.? Her parents obviously provide her a lifestyle that makes participating in this activity accessible. She has internet access. She has computer and IT sources available to her perhaps from school or her parents. And her parents are actively cultivating her intellectual capital by driving her from place to place to participate in these activities.? This story speaks volumes about the importance of home resources in creating children who are not only self-aware of their genius, but who also process the agency and drive to fulfill it.

I?m proud of this young lady and I am inspired by her story.? It inspires me to create opportunities for other young ladies, particularly those from disadvantaged communities to go the stars.? That?s why I support activities like this one

Black Girls Code is going on a? multi-city tour to teach young girls and boys how to code. They have an Indiegogo Campaign to help raise funds to make it happen. Success like Nive Jayasekar?s, has to start from somewhere.? But for so many young people (and their families) they don?t know where to start.? Summer of Code is addressing the foundational barriers for many young people: Awareness and Participation.

Awareness. Both students and parents have to be aware of the existence of these opportunities.? We can?t begin to cultivate a garden if we have no idea what herbs, fruits, or veggies are possible to grow in our plot. That?s what is happening to today?s urban (and rural) youth.? They have NO idea what?s out there or where to start or how to proceed or who to turn to for their own answers.

I once read a book, Supplementary Education: The Hidden Curriculum of High Academic Achievement by Edmund Gordon.

The idea of supplementary education is based on the assumption that high academic achievement is closely associated with exposure to family and community-based activities and learning experiences that occur both in and out of school in support of academic learning. For low income and some ethnic minority student groups, opportunities to participate in such activities are generally under-resourced and underutilized in comparison to the access to and participation in such activities by many European- and Asian- Americans from mid to high socio-economic backgrounds.

Like the book, I make the argument that supplemental education is the key to turning the tide to the achievement gap in this nation and for attracting kids from under-represented groups to the sciences.? How can expect more diverse participation in Hackathons, MakerFaires, Robotics Competitions, Science Fairs, Science Festivals, or Innovation Contests if people don?t even know what these thing are or that communities for these activities exist.

Participation. The next step is participating in these events.? Starting clubs, doing projects, working with mentors and sponsors. Attending events (en masse), signing up for competitions, and winning competitions. This means more than saying ?I want to do something? or ?I tried doing that once?. I means doing it and sticking with it.? It also means having family and community support to do it and stick with it. I?m speaking directly to adults on this one. We (parents, aunts/uncles, cousins, neighbors, pastors, teachers, club volunteers) have got to make it so that these kids/any kid can fully participate. Students need to be provided resources and tools to access these opportunities. They also need encouragement and support from adults. (Kudos to organizations like Black Data Processing Associates for their High School Computer Competition and the National Society of Black Engineers for their Pre-College Initiative Programs all over the nation.? They do this kind of work everyday.)

Though there are disparities between minority kids and white kids, the problem really is universal.? Very often, kids from lower socioeconomic status are on their own when it comes to preparing for life after high school.? They often cultivate their own interests in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).? They dabble and tinker and play, usually in isolation ? without a community of supporters to tell them that their hobbies are okay, even worthwhile.? And they have to be resilient, so resilient.

I can?t tell you how many kids (from the hood and the country) I?ve seen die inside from some adult randomly tell them that their interests in games, electronics, cars, animals, or (_insert hobby_), was a waste of time and foolish or that they weren?t ?smart? enough.? I saw the light of excitement get snuffed from their eyes, the flicker of self-propelled learning fade away.? Their whole lives were cut down simply because they were poor or because they were in the remedial classes or were Special School District kids or had a criminal record. It broke my heart to see someone on the verge of ?getting it? only to be deterred just before they rounded that corner.

The sad truth is, there is more out there working against these types of kids than for them.? Even if they had found their way to STEM and loved it, the odds are still against them ?making it?. By that I mean staying out of trouble (e.g. crime, having babies) or getting distracted (e.g. family/neighborhood drama, trying to keep a roof over their heads and foods in their bellies).? I?ve witnessed some kids get explicitly discouraged from doing anything big. ?Dreams, hopes, college. That ain?t for you!? It?s no wonder some kids don?t trust adults.? By and large, I think we have let so many of them down.

So when I see a kid who have persevered through that madness: the poverty and the negative attitudes, my whole spirit reaches out to compel them to continue, to succeed. Even for those that avoided or straight dodged close bullets they can get very close, but still be so far away. Application, participation fees, and or transportation can be enough to stall the whole train. This one was always my snag in the carpet that tripped me up.? In high school, I was accepted in a summer writing program at a college.? It seemed to be a competitive process. I?d stay on campus and take workshops from college English and Literature Professors.? The cost to attend was $500.? I didn?t have it. My parents didn?t have it. No one in my family had it. That was the end of that. It?s a typical example of how access to opportunity matters so very much.

I love that the Summer of Code will lay the foundation so that a new set of faces will dare compete in the next Big Brand Hackathon and take home the prize.? Join me in supporting them so that nothing will keep another kid from accessing the on ramp to STEM.

Officials: 1 feared dead in Canada roof collapse

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario (AP) ? At least one person is feared dead and another trapped inside the rubble of a roof collapse at mall in northern Ontario, authorities said Sunday.

More than 24 hours after the collapse, rescue workers have been unable to reach the victims because the structure is too unstable. But images taken with the camera show a hand and foot in the dusty debris, said Ontario Provincial Police Insp. Percy Jollymore.

Fire officials heard tapping Sunday morning in another part of the rubble, but nothing had been heard for hours. They said they also tried to reach that person by drilling through a wall, but found the structure too unsafe to risk entering far enough inside.

"Some of our search members this morning heard a couple of taps," said Bill Needles, a spokesman from the Heavy Urban Search and Rescue team which travelled from Toronto. "They called for a quick silence on the site and there was a couple more taps. That was an indication to us that we were dealing with a rescue."

He said the operation is still a rescue mission and they're still hoping to find people alive.

"We're believing that they're still there and still alive," Needles said.

Police have a list of nine people missing since the collapse Saturday, but the names are being crossed off as members of the community account for their loved ones.

At least 22 people suffered minor injuries in the roof collapse Saturday afternoon at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.

A special emergency crew is working to stabilize the scene, but authorities said the process could take another 12 hours.

A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled down two floors into an area near the food court, , leaving behind a gaping hole which was 12 meters (39 feet) by 24 meters (79 feet). It also downed hydro lines and triggered a gas leak.

Emergency officials quickly cleared out the mall and closed surrounding roads. Mayor Rick Hamilton declared a state of emergency.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said he was in touch with Elliot Lake's mayor and thanked emergency crews in the city for their efforts.

"As we anxiously wait to learn more about anyone thought to be missing in Elliot Lake, our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and also with those who have been injured and indeed with the entire community," McGuinty said in a statement.

Hope mingled with frustration in the close-knit community as residents waited for news.

"There's a fair amount missing," said Heather Richer, who owns a restaurant in the mall and was at work when the collapse took place. "I'm hoping everyone's found, but I'm giving up hope on whether they're going to find them alive."

Richer, who was particularly concerned about an acquaintance who was unaccounted for, described Saturday's thunderous collapse as a nightmare.

"It was almost like a little mini earthquake, like a big bang, and then gone," she said. "There was nothing there. Everything started to cave in, water was pouring out of the pipes."

Joe Drazil, a Zellers store employee, said several cars appeared to have fallen through the gaping hole near some escalators.

"You can see the roof with the cars hanging inside," he said. "Everybody was cleared from the whole mall. After that, there was numerous police and emergency vehicles coming from all over."

Shopper Jean-Marc Hayward was having coffee when the roof collapsed about 20 feet (6 meters) from him. He said a big hunk of concrete tumbled down through two floors and that it sounded like an explosion. "It was a big loud crash. It didn't just go down one floor it went down two floors," he said.

Hayward said a lottery terminal kiosk was located directly under the roof that caved in.

Hayward said he saw one man with a bloody face. Hayward, a dwarf who has trouble with his legs, said he couldn't run out.

"I was sucking in dust," he said.

Hayward and others have said the mall roof has leaked water for some time. There have long been buckets and tarps around the mall to collect leaking water, Hayward said.

"It's obvious there has been a lot of damage in the structure because of the water," Hayward said. "A couple of years ago they said they fixed all the leaks in the mall, but they didn't. You could tell every time it rained."

Stephan Powell of Toronto Fire Services could not confirm if rescue officials had been briefed about the water leaking issue.

The two-level mall in this northern Ontario community is approximately 200,000 square feet (18,580 sq. meters). It houses a grocery store, restaurants, a number of retail outlets, a hotel, and the constituency office for a member of the provincial parliament.

Rhonda Bear, a spokeswoman for the mall, which is run by Eastwood Mall Incorporated, referred all questions on the collapse and the condition of the mall to its lawyer, who could not immediately be reached for comment.

"All our concern right now is our prayers are with the families," Bear said.

White Sox acquire Youkilis from Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) ? Kevin Youkilis took off his batting helmet, waved to the crowd and blew a kiss to his adoring fans.

A favorite at Fenway Park for so long, he wanted a final chance to say so long.

The Boston Red Sox traded away the hard-nosed Youkilis on Sunday, sending the three-time All-Star infielder and cash to the Chicago White Sox for utilityman Brent Lillibridge and right-hander Zach Stewart.

"Bobby (Valentine) wanted him to have that moment of walking off the field," Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said.

A member of Boston teams that won the World Series in 2004 and 2007, the 33-year-old Youkilis had seen his playing time drastically cut lately. He now joins the AL Central-leading White Sox, who wanted a regular third baseman.

"I just got off the phone with him, he's very excited to join our club and he's got a little edge to him that I like," White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said. "I can't tell you exactly what he said, but he wants to come in and prove some people wrong."

Youkilis had a rousing end to his days with the Red Sox. He was unavailable after the game, leaving behind a locker without his nameplate above it.

After hitting an RBI triple in the seventh inning of a 9-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, he was lifted for a pinch runner. Longtime pal Nick Punto came out to replace him and the pair hugged.

Youkilis saluted the crowd and was rewarded with a standing ovation. His teammates, coaches and Valentine all were on the top step of the dugout cheering for him, and they urged Youkilis to take a curtain call.

Youkilis' time in Boston became limited because of the play of rookie Will Middlebrooks, hitting .326 with nine homers and 34 RBIs in 41 games.

"The way Middlebrooks was playing, he needs to be in the lineup every day," Cherington said. "Bobby's done a good job of shuffling everyday."

But the GM said the veteran Youkilis will long be remembered for his hustle and grit.

"He was a very passionate player that played very, very hard," Cherington said. "He sort of willed himself to being an All-Star and obviously was a huge contributor for us in the middle of the lineup. He did a lot of good things."

The Fenway faithful should get to see Youkilis soon. The White Sox visit Boston a week after next month's All-Star game.

The season started kind of rocky between Youkilis and first-year manager Valentine.

In April, Valentine questioned Youkilis' commitment to the game in his weekly television interview, then later apologized to him a day later.

Youkilis, who can play both of the corner infield spots, is a career .286 hitter with 133 homers and 563 RBIs.

Longtime teammate Dustin Pedroia said it was a tough day.

"He pushes me everyday," the Boston second baseman said. "I want to go out and play hard just like he does. He's always out there trying his best to do whatever he can to help us win. I appreciate him so much for that."

The White Sox have been looking for a third baseman with Brent Morel plagued by back problems.

"I think it's good for him. A good change of scenery, I'm sure," White Sox star Paul Konerko said. "Guy's a good player and he's been a great player in Boston for a long time so you can play at that level you can play anywhere."

The 25-year-old Stewart is 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA in 18 games with the White Sox this season. Lillibridge, 28, is hitting .175 with two RBIs and seven stolen bases in 48 games.

Cherington was excited to get Stewart.

"He's a good thrower and looks like he can be a major league starter," he said. "He just needs a little more time in the minors."

Lillibridge is expected to join the Red Sox in a utility role.

"I loved playing here, I enjoyed it so much," Lillibridge said after the White Sox beat visiting Milwaukee 1-0 in 10 innings. "I'm excited to see where my career will go and I'm excited to help the Red Sox."

Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB

Although casual users and data-hungry prosumers alike will agree that anything beyond two or three terabytes is unnecessary, such large capacities are practically indispensible for businesses whose very existence is staked on data-intensive applications. The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB ($499 direct) comfortably fits in this rarefied territory. Equally worth considering is its versatility, as it supports FireWire (400 and 800), USB 2.0, and eSATA interfaces. Our current Editors' Choice for desktop-class hard drives, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB) (Price, 4 stars), which, despite its smaller capacity, has a more versatile GoFlex adapter, but if capacity is your paramount consideration, it's worth considering.

Design and Features
Measuring 6.54 by 3.87 by 6.06 inches (HWD), the My Passport Studio Edition II is fairly sizeable?understandable, given that it's comprised of two 3TB drives beneath its matte-finish silver plastic chassis. Moreover, it's not nearly as bulky as others in its class, especially when one considers the unapologetically Herculean dimensions of the IoSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars). The elegant plastic chassis is elegantly unadorned, save for the soft white glow emitted by an LED activity light in the front and the reflective silver WD logos embossed on the left and right sides. Air vents sporting dot- and dash-shaped cutouts run along three sides to keep things cool while providing a nice visual contrast to the subdued exterior. A quartet of I/O interfaces can be found on the rear of the drive, consisting of a micro USB 2.0 port, a pair of daisy-chainable FireWire800 ports (also compatible with FireWire 400) and an eSATA port. Unlike the comparably-sized LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6 TB) ($749 list, 4 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II does not support Thunderbolt. And unlike the CRU-DataPort RTX100-3SJ's (3TB) ($399 list, 3.5 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II does not support USB 3.0.

The My Passport Studio Edition II comes formatted to HFS+ for use on Mac OS X systems right out of the box, but can easily be reformatted to either FAT32 or NTFS. Although its compatibility with both systems is a plus that sets it apart from the Mac-only LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series, it must reformatted, whereas the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk can simply be swapped between systems without this added procedure. Like its predecessor, the My Book Studio Edition II (2TB) ($429.99 list, 4.5 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II allows for reconfiguration of the RAID array from the pre-set RAID 0 array (striping, 6 TB) to RAID 1 (mirroring, 3 TB x 2) through the included WD Drive Manager software.

Though the $500 price tag attached to the My Passport Studio Edition II seems expensive at first blush, it ultimately breaks down to 8 cents per GB, making it considerably cheaper than similar drives in its class. Even taken as a whole, it's nonetheless significantly more affordable than the equally sized Lacie 2big Thunderbolt Series.

Performance
The My Passport Studio Edition II operated at a brisk pace using each of its three interfaces, but its nimble eSATA performance stole the show. Using this interface, the My Passport Studio Edition II transferred our standard 1.22GB test folder in a scant 12 seconds, the same amount of time as the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series using a Thunderbolt connection, and quicker than the Seagate GoFlex Desk's performance with USB 3.0 (15 seconds). And while the My Passport Studio Edition II still fell 2 seconds short of the CRU-DataPort RTX100-3SJ's impressive eSATA transfer rate of 10 seconds, its eSATA speed nonetheless edged past the CRU-DataPort's USB 3.0 transfer speed (14 seconds).

Even if you don't plan on utilizing an eSATA connection, the My Passport Studio still held its own against the competition. With a Mac, it transferred our test folder in an impressive 19 seconds (via FireWire 800) and 42 seconds (USB 2.0). It yielded somewhat slower results using Windows 7, clocking in at 24 seconds (FireWire 800) and 48 seconds (USB 2.0), putting it slightly behind both the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk and the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) ($369.99 list, 3.5 stars), both of which transferred our test folder in 42 seconds under USB 2.0. Regardless of which operating system is used, the Iomega Mac Companion's FireWire 800 speed (30 seconds) was nonetheless handily outpaced by the My Passport Studio II, both in Windows and Mac environments.

Although the My Passport Studio II's PCMark 05 hard drive test scores were fairly high, particularly with eSATA (5,396), but also with USB 2.0 (3,051) and FireWire 800 (4,493), it was ultimately trounced by the CRU-DataPort TRX100-3SJ's scores of 9,023 (USB 3.0) and 8,269 (eSATA).

Ultimately, the Western Digital My Passport Studio II (6TB) has plenty of noteworthy attributes. In addition to 6TB of storage, its configurable RAID scheme and trifecta of connectivity options make for a rather flexible external desktop-class hard drive. Still, it's not nearly as versatile nor future-proofed as the Editors' Choice Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB), which sports a GoFlex adapter and can be easily swapped between Mac and Windows operating systems without the reformatting. If capacity is your main consideration, however, then your choice ultimately boils down to the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6TB) or the My Passport Studio II. If this is the case, stick with the My Passport Studio II, because, despite its minor shortcomings, its combination of capacity and performance make it a fine choice.

COMPARISON TABLE

California dreaming? Under $4-a-gallon gas could rev up state economy.

It may be hard to believe, and it was a long time coming, but gas in California fell below $4 a gallon after three weeks of steep declines. Good news for the economy at last.

The average price of a gallon of gas has fallen below the?$4-mark in California thanks to a 12.7-cent drop from the previous week, the third double-digit decline in as many weeks, the AAA Fuel Gauge Report says.

According to the report, a gallon of gas in California cost $3.99 Monday, marking the first time since mid-February the state has seen a below-$4-per-gallon average.

It is a?bright spot for many in a state that seems to be getting nothing but bad economic news recently.

?This is good news for consumers and good news for the state,? says?H.D. Palmer,?chief spokesman for the?California State Department of Finance.??This means more money in the pockets of consumers, more?money spent on clothing and other retail items, which means more sales taxes for the state.?

The lower gas prices also bring the state added revenue in other ways. California does not have sales tax on gasoline, but has?an excise tax that is measured in the number of gallons sold, points out Mr. Palmer.

?This means that the more gas people buy because it?s cheaper, the more that excise tax will bring in,? he says. Of course, higher prices?usually dampen the volume of purchases, he adds.

Palmer is quick to point out that any boon to state coffers generated by consumer spending won?t necessarily?translate immediately into restored jobs for teachers or other public employees. ?This will fill pocketbooks and gas tanks,? he says,?but adds that how and where it will impact state expenditures is less direct.

For many consumers, however, the impact is immediate.

?Now I can breathe easy again,? says Carlos, of Carlos and Pepe Painting, as he fills his pickup truck with regular gas at $3.89 at the corner ARCO in Sherman Oaks. He says his business depends on jobs all over Southern California, and when gas prices climbed well over $4 for a month, he was having a hard time making ends meet.

?Yeah, we cut back on everything from food to movies,? he says, adding that his truck only gets about 18 miles per gallon. ?All this driving was really socking it to my pocketbook.?

Most experts expect?prices to trend downward through at least the third?quarter of this year. According to this week?s petroleum report from the US Energy Information Administration, national prices were on average $3.57 a gallon this past week, and regular gasoline is now expected to average $3.51 per gallon nationally in the third quarter, down from the $3.76 per gallon forecast in May.

Some observers suggest that while this?decline is certainly welcome news for many, the longer term trend?of rising prices is less rosy, with volatile energy prices becoming the norm.

While gas prices are part of a much larger picture, they are an important and growing one, says Prof. David Zilberman, co-author of a study on the connection between gas prices and the California?economy in connection with the Center for Energy and Environmental Economics at?the University of California at Berkeley.

He points out that, taking inflation into account, gas prices were stable for almost 30 years until the middle of the last decade,?which led many to?downplay their impact on consumers.

However, as gas prices began to spike leading up to the housing crisis,?higher?energy costs?became an often overlooked ?last straw,? and triggered a number of?bankruptcies and foreclosures, says?Professor Zilberman.

?They are an important part of the cost of living,? he says. ?When you raise?gas prices, it?s like raising taxes,? he says, adding, ?only you are paying OPEC, not the government.?

iFixit rips open new 15-inch MacBook Pro and 13-inch Air

You've got to admire the ferocity with which iFixit tears into a new gadget. Sure, there might not be much new to look at inside the non-Retina-packing MacBook Pro or updated Air, but that didn't stop the site's dedicated hackers from ripping open the laptops and spreading their guts around a table. So, how does the standard Pro differ from its pixel-packed sibling? Well, in almost every way imaginable. In fact, there's not a lot separating the mid 2012 Pro from the 2011 model. Sure it's got some mildly updated internals, but it's still got the original MagSafe connector, a single Thunderbolt port and it is much easier to upgrade or repair than the spotlight-hogging version. The Air, on the other hand, does get a slight physical facelift, though it also remains largely the same as last year's model. The SSD has a tweaked connector and a new Sandforce controller, but otherwise, it seems like the biggest visible changes are some rotated labels and stickers.
