Bryant field goal leads Falcons past Panther 30-28

ATLANTA (AP) ? Matt Ryan took an awful beating.

Another win for the Atlanta Falcons will make the pain a lot easier to take.

Shaking off a career-high seven sacks, Ryan completed a 59-yard pass to Roddy White with about a minute remaining, setting up Matt Bryant's 40-yard field goal that kept the Falcons perfect on the season with a wild 30-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

After squandering a 24-14 lead in the second half, the Falcons (4-0) needed a crucial fumble by Cam Newton to even have a chance ? and they still faced long odds when the Panthers downed a punt at the Atlanta 1 with 1:09 remaining.

Ryan had no timeouts and surely some doubt about how much time his beleaguered offensive line would give him. But he dropped back about as far as he could, threw it about as far as he could, and relied on White to go up and make the catch.

He did, between two defenders.

Bryant's kick won it with 5 seconds remaining.

"We made the plays when we needed to," said Ryan, who passed for 369 yards and three touchdowns. "That's what you need to do week to week in this league."

The Falcons (4-0) are off to their best start since 2004, when they reached the NFC championship game.

This was their stiffest challenge yet.

"That was exciting. Whew!" said coach Mike Smith, finally able to exhale. "Every time it looked bleak, every time it looked like we didn't have a chance, we were able to overcome it."

Newton threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he let the ball slip away when it looked as though he had clinched the victory for the Panthers (1-3).

"You have to protect the football," Newton said. "That was a key focus going into this game, and I fumbled. There's a lot of guys that are trusting the ball carrier, and I was the ball carrier that particular play to get the job done. And I dropped the ball."

On third-and-2 at the Atlanta 46, Newton took the snap and bulled his way over the left side, his body surging across the spot needed for the first down. On the sideline, several of the Panthers broke into a celebration.

But John Abraham knocked it loose, the ball squirting backward. Fullback Mike Tolbert covered it for Carolina at the 45 ? 1 yard shy of a first down. After attempting unsuccessfully to draw the Falcons offside, the Panthers punted it away.

Ryan and White took advantage of another chance.

"I threw it high and far to the spot we talk about," Ryan said. "Roddy went up and made a great catch. When you're in that situation late in the game, that's what you have to do."

White was sandwiched between cornerback Josh Norman and safety Haruki Nakamura, but managed to leap over both of them to bring down the pass at the Carolina 40. A pass interference call and two short completions made things easier for Bryant, who had already connected from 41 and 33 yards to improve to 8 for 8 on the season.

Make it 9 for 9.

The kick was straight down the middle.

With Julio Jones hindered by an injured right hand, White came up with a huge game for the Falcons. He had eight catches for 169 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. But his biggest catch was the final one.

"Matt told me he was going to throw it up there. Just make a play," White said. "Not for one second did we think we were going to lose the game."

Ryan credited his offensive line on the final drive, even though they struggled most of the day to keep him upright against Charles Johnson and the rest of the Panthers defense.

Johnson spent so much time in the backfield he should've worn an Atlanta jersey, finishing with 3? sacks. Ryan was hit nine times after throwing and hurried on eight other attempts.

"The offensive line did a great job," Ryan said, all evidence to the contrary. "If you're going to throw the football that far down the field, you need some time. The guys did a great job of pass protection, giving us time to throw it down there."

Newton's fumble ruined what had been a stellar performance. He threw for 215 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Greg Olsen early in the game, then a 36-yard scoring play to Kealoha Pilares that put the Panthers ahead 28-24 with 7:55 remaining.

Newton also ran for 86 yards on nine carries, bulling his way into the end zone from 4 yards late in the third quarter.

The Panthers played much better than they did in their last outing, a 36-7 home loss to the New York Giants, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from sliding a daunting three games behind Atlanta in the NFC South.

"I want to apologize to my teammates and the fans that were watching out there," Newton said. "Everybody was doing their job. I clearly had the first down, but I've just got to hold onto the football."

Ryan also connected on a 60-yard touchdown with Michael Turner, who took a screen pass right about the line of scrimmage and zigzagged down the field for the first scoring reception of his nine-year career.

DeAngelo Williams scored Carolina's other TD on a 13-yard run.

Notes: The Falcons failed to score a TD on their opening possession for the first time this season, going three-and-out. Also, it was the first time the Panthers did not allow a touchdown on their opponent's opening drive. ... Nakamura had an early interception, but it was largely a day to forget for the Carolina free safety. He was beaten on both of White's touchdown receptions, missed a tackle on Turner's scoring play and had the ball snatched away by White on the long pass that set up the winning field goal. ... Atlanta's only other 4-0 start came in 1986.

Jay-Z rocks Brooklyn arena he helped get built

Carlo Allegri / Reuters

Jay-Z performs on stage at the newly built Barclays Center in the Brooklyn borough of New York on Friday, Sept. 28.

By Simon Vozick-Levinson, Rolling Stone

"I've been on many stages, been around the world, but nothing feels like tonight," Jay-Z told the crowd Friday night during his inaugural blow-out at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. He reeled off a few of the other noted houses he's rocked: the Grammys, Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo, the Apollo Theater. "Nothing feels like tonight, Brooklyn. I swear to God."

Jay's performance -- the first ever in the newly constructed venue, with seven more sold-out shows scheduled over the next week -- was a many-layered milestone. While he famously grew up in Brooklyn's Marcy Houses, this was his first major show of this size in his home borough. As partial owner of the NBA's rechristened Brooklyn Nets, he helped get this billion-dollar basketball arena built not far from his old neighborhood. His rise to this level of success and cultural power is an incredible American story, and he is justifiably proud.

He opened the show aptly with 1997's classic "Where I'm From." It's a staple of his live sets, a song he's performed hundreds of times if not more. Friday night?-- center stage in jeans and a black puffy vest over a custom Nets jersey, gold chains hanging down his chest -- he attacked the verses with a new force, spitting out precise syllables: "I'm from where the hammers rung, news cameras never come. ..."

Jay stood alone under a spotlight on the narrow stage, backed by a huge sloping video screen and a tight live band built into perches above him. He paid tribute to a fallen mentor early on by building the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Kick in the Door" and "Juicy" into the set list. Later, shortly after an authoritative "99 Problems," he walked to a far corner of the stage and retrieved a glittering gold bottle, requesting respectful silence as he poured out a little bubbly for Biggie: "See, you can stunt like that when you own the whole place." He turned reflective, reminiscing aloud about his journey from the projects to this stage. "You don't mind if I take my time? I'm really overwhelmed a little bit."

He channeled the night's emotions into a top-notch rendition of the hit parade he's road tested at festivals and arenas over the last few years, covering his career from 1996's "Reasonable Doubt" to 2009's "The Blueprint 3" in a little over an hour. He delivered the key lines in 2001's great "Heart of the City" with extra emphasis, punching the air as he rapped, "I told you in '96 that I came to take this [expletive], and I did."

Henny Ray Abrams / AP

Fans arrive for the first of eight Jay-Z shows at the new Barclays Center.

As the main set wound down, Jay-Z looked out at the crowd of 18,000 reverent fans, savoring the moment. "What an amazing feeling tonight," he said again. "This night was a dream." He thanked everyone sincerely while the chords of 2003's "Encore" rolled quietly on. Someone in the crowd passed a Brooklyn Dodgers jersey with Jackie Robinson's name on it up to the stage, and he held it up with pride: "Look how far we've come."

Jay told Rolling Stone a few days ago?that there would be no guests at his Barclays Center shows. ("This is my one chance to be selfish!" he kidded.) He kept that promise until the encore, when he surprised the arena by bringing out Bed-Stuy legend Big Daddy Kane, who ripped through 1988's "Ain't No Half-Steppin'" and 1989's "Warm It Up, Kane," while busting out some old-school moves (complete with a full jumping split) with his original backup dancers Scoob and Scrap. "We have to understand our history," said Jay-Z appreciatively.

"OK, I'm still not ready to leave," he went on after Kane left, drawing deafening cheers. Jay ran through a couple of recent guest verses -- reveling in the double-time flow of G.O.O.D. Music's "Clique" and the luxurious style of Rick Ross' "3 Kings." "I got a million of these!" he crowed.

But the hour was growing late. Jay-Z sent us home with a heartfelt speech about the "genius-level talent" that he feels lies within everyone. "I ain't no different from anyone in this room, and now I'm standing on this stage, living proof," he said. And with that, it was finally time to say goodbye?-- if only so he could rest up for all the other shows he has coming up. "There's no [expletive] curfew," he said with a grin. "But I've really got to go."

Chicago looks to Twitter for answer to gun problem

The city of Chicago is asking residents with ideas on how to get illegal guns off the streets to share their thoughts -- in 140 characters or fewer on Twitter.

The initiative is part of Chicago Ideas Week, an annual forum for innovators, artists, scientists and others to share ideas and inspire action.

Those who think they know how to cut off the flow of illegal guns into Chicago are being asked to tweet them with the hashtag (hash)whatifchicago.

The best submitted ideas will be debated at an Oct. 11 panel discussion.

Chicago's social media director, Kevin Hauswirth, says the effort is a great example of "the potential power that social media offers city government."

According to police, 382 people have been killed so far this year, many by guns, as of the middle of September.

India's Solution to an Oil Crisis

At last count by the Energy Information Administration, the United States is importing roughly 9.1 million barrels of crude on a daily basis.

Of those imports, 48% is coming directly from OPEC members.

Those numbers aren't really where we'd like them to be, but let's face it; our addiction to Middle East oil has never been a secret.

And if you think we have it bad when it comes to foreign oil dependence, you haven't considered what's going on in India...

With a population of 1.2 billion, India relies on OPEC countries for an overwhelming 78% of its oil imports:

india oil breakdown

Granted, this wouldn't be as problematic if India's consumption wasn't taking off like a shot:

India Oil demand

Unfortunately, there's a rather large snag in securing future oil supplies. We touched recently on this side of the Middle East oil crisis that threatens future oil exports.

At current demand levels, India is relying on the oil cartel for about 2.5 million barrels per day, so you can imagine how eager they are to find a more reliable source of crude.

Here the United States, the solution seems simple enough: For every barrel we add to domestic output, we could technically scratch off one barrel from our OPEC imports. In fact within the last five years, we've been able to boost production by almost 25% while cutting OPEC imports by 23%.

But India can't say the same.

During the same period, India's production grown by less than 10% and now sits around 900,000 bbls/d. And those OPEC imports come with a heavy price. They dished out over $140 billion for imported oil last year alone.

It really leaves them with only one option: find a new supplier.

If India can't count on OPEC going forward, they'll be forced to look elsewhere... and that's exactly what they've started doing.

But the question is are they too late?

Our analysts have traveled the world over, dedicated to finding the best and most profitable investments in the global energy markets. All you have to do to join our Energy and Capital investment community is sign up for the newsletter below. You'll also get our free report, Ultimate Oil Investors Kit.

Blue Light Energy Special

There's a blue light special right now on North American energy plays.

Just last week we looked at the buying spree taking place on North American soil. And it makes perfect sense when you consider Canada and the United States are among the few countries that can still increase oil production.

It was only a few months back when China's CNOOC announced its $15.1 billion acquisition of Nexen Inc. India may be joining them very soon...

At least, that's what will happen if several of India's state-run oil companies spend $5 billion for a 50% stake in ConocoPhillips' oil sands assets. That's just the latest in a string of deals that have gone down over the last few years.

Last month, Kuwait paid its way onto the Canadian oil sands patch when its state-run oil company invested $4 billion in an oil sands project with Athabasca Oil Corp.

(You might remember Athabasca from January, when it sold its remaining MacKay River oil sands property to PetroChina?)

It's intriguing to see how willing Kuwait is to develop Alberta's bituminous sand when they have 115 billion barrels of oil in their own backyard. I guess having 263 billion barrels of recoverable oil is enough to grab anyone's attention...

Then again, it's not just oil these countries are after?? because these billion-dollar deals in the oil sands are just the tip of the iceberg for the rush to stake a claim in Canada's energy sector.

Investing in Canada's Energy War

As it turns out, India's potential bargain isn't solely focused on Canada's heavy oil fortune. GAIL is currently gunning for a piece of Repsol's stake in Canaport LNG project.

Perhaps the largest potential for North American energy is through LNG exports.?This is especially true for Canada. Right now, practically all Canadian energy exports are sent south into the lower 48 states.

Fact is, we've always been their best customer ? but that's because we've been their only customer.

Within ten years, that's going to change, whether we want it to or not.

Why sell us natural gas for $3/Mcf when Asian-Pacific countries are paying 6x that amount?

This has created an unprecedented buying opportunity for investors ready to cash in on this battle for Canadian energy. In fact, a select few companies are even offering you the chance to get in on the ground floor of these future Canadian LNG exports...

Until next time,

Voter registration problems widening in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? What first appeared to be an isolated problem in one Florida county has now spread statewide, with election officials in nine counties informing prosecutors or state election officials about questionable voter registration forms filled out on behalf of the Republican Party of Florida.

State Republican officials already have fired the vendor it had hired to register voters, and took the additional step of filing an election fraud complaint against the company, Strategic Allied Consulting, with state officials. That complaint was handed over Friday to state law-enforcement authorities.

A spokesman for Florida's GOP said the matter was being treated seriously.

"We are doing what we can to find out how broad the scope is," said Brian Burgess, the spokesman.

Florida is the battleground state where past election problems led to the chaotic recount that followed the 2000 presidential election.

The Florida Democratic Party called on the state to "revoke" the ability of state Republicans to continue to register voters while the investigation continues. Oct. 9 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

"It is clear that the Republican Party of Florida does not have the institutional controls in place to be trusted as a third-party, voter registration organization," said Scott Arceneaux, executive director of the Florida Democratic Party.

The Republican Party of Florida has paid Strategic Allied Consulting more than $1.3 million, and the Republican National Committee used the group for work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

The company said earlier this week that it was cooperating with elections officials in Florida. It said the suspect forms were turned in by one person, who has been fired.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," Fred Petti, a company attorney, said Thursday.

An email request to the company seeking additional comment, following the company's instructions, was not immediately returned Friday.

In Florida, it is a third-degree felony to "willfully submit" any false voter registration information, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

In recent years, Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature ? citing suspicious voter registration forms turned in by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN ? has cracked down on groups holding voter registration drives.

The League of Women Voters filed a federal lawsuit against some of the restrictions and Florida agreed earlier this month to drop a new requirement to turn in registration applications within 48 hours after they are signed. The state has reinstated a 10-day deadline.

The questionable forms tied to the Republican Party have showed up in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, as well as counties in southwest and northeast Florida as well as the Florida Panhandle.

Election officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday handed over more than 100 suspect forms to local prosecutors. They did so days after officials in Palm Beach County also alerted prosecutors.

Ann Bodenstein, the elections supervisor for Santa Rosa County, said her staff started raising questions after an employee saw a form that changed the home address of a neighbor.

Paul Lux, election supervisor for Okaloosa County, said questionable forms in the Florida Panhandle appear to have all come from Strategic's effort based at the local Republican Party headquarters. He said his office has turned up dozens of suspect forms.

Lux said there have been forms that listed dead people and were either incomplete or illegible. He met with local prosecutors on Friday, but added that his staff was still going through hundreds of forms dropped off by Strategic employees.

Lux, who is a Republican, said he warned local party officials earlier this month when he first learned the company was paying people to register voters.

"I told them 'This is not going to end well,'" Lux said.

But Lux added that he did not blame the Republican Party of Florida.

"I can't place the blame on RPOF if they hired a firm and that firm wasn't following the rules they were given to follow," Lux said.

The state party filed the complaint against Strategic Allied Consulting with state election officials, who late Friday handed the case over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

An FDLE spokeswoman said the agency would not automatically open a criminal investigation, but would review to see if there were "possible criminal acts."

Facebook Messenger for BlackBerry reaches App World, sates compulsive chatters

If you own a BlackBerry, it might not have been immediately apparent that Facebook Messenger has been an option since October; unlike with Android or iOS, you had to track down the download on Facebook's website. We don't know why it's been kept out of a more accessible channel, but that ends today with Facebook's chat-focused app arriving on BlackBerry App World like most any other title. There don't appear to be any new tricks included with the expanded availability, although we'd say that the wider exposure is enough of a highlight for an audience that just needs to get by until BlackBerry 10. Those who don't use BBM for all their instant messaging can find what they need at the source link.

Suited Science: What Are the Odds of Drawing That Card?

CARDSHARP: Learn about probabilities and put your counting skills to the test in the classic card game "Go Fish." Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Mathematics
Probability
Chance
Strategy
Cards

Introduction
Have you ever been playing cards and wished you could use psychic powers to draw the card you wanted? You may not be psychic, but you can still have the power of probability on your side. In this activity you'll investigate the probabilities of drawing specific types of cards from a deck. You'll discover how math can help you avoid the dreaded phrase, "Go fish!"

Background
When you draw a card from a deck, you have a certain chance of getting a specific type of card, such as a spade or face card, or one particular card, such as the queen of hearts. Consider the game "Go Fish" with a regular card deck. The goal is to get the most four-of-a-kind sets by asking your opponent for matching cards or by drawing them from the deck. To win, you can rely on chance or you can increase your probability of getting matching cards, but how?

By understanding how chance is related to math, you can play with a winning strategy. For example, if you have three kings and one queen in your hand and it's your turn to ask for a card, which one should you ask your opponent for? You might think you should ask for a king, but it's actually better to take a queen! Why? Because you have a better chance of getting it. There are four kings and four queens in the deck, and with three kings and one queen in your hand, there's one king and three queens left. This gives you only one chance to get a king, but three chances to get a queen out of the remaining cards.

Materials
??? ? Standard deck of playing cards
??? ? Piece of paper
??? ? Pencil or pen
??? ? Calculator

Preparation
??? ? Count the cards in the deck and make sure it is complete. (There should be 54 cards total.) Take out the two jokers. Shuffle the deck three times and set aside.
??? ? Pick four types of cards to investigate, such as a color, suit, number or face card, and a specific one. For example, you could investigate red cards, spades, kings and the queen of hearts.
??? ? Draw a table to in which to record your data. Make a column for each card type you'll investigate. In the first row write how many of that type of card are in the deck. For example, there are 26 red cards in a deck, 13 spades, four kings and one queen of hearts. Make 10 rows below this one for the 10 trials you will be doing.

Procedure
??? ? Decide which type of card you will investigate first. Draw cards from the top of the deck and flip them over one at a time, counting as you go, and stop when you see that type of card. How many cards did you draw until you reached that card? Write down the answer in your table.
??? ? Shuffle the deck again and repeat this process, flipping over the cards and looking for the same type of card. How many cards did it take this time? Write down the answer in your table. Repeat this for a total of 10 times for one type of card.
??? ? Repeat this process for each of the four types of cards you picked to investigate. This means that you will have looked for each type of card a total of 10 times.
??? ? Calculate the average number of cards you drew to reach each type of card. Label the last row in your table "Averages" and write them in this row.
??? ? Which types of cards were the easiest to draw? Which were the most difficult? How do you think the chances of drawing a card relate to the total number of that card type in the deck?
??? ? Based on what you saw in this activity, how do you think probability can help you choose the right strategy in a card game?
??? ? Extra: A more advanced way of showing the results of your experiment would be to make histograms, which are a type of graph to show distributions. Try making a separate histogram for each type of card you tested by graphing the number of cards drawn for each trial separately in a bar graph. When all of the bars are lined up next to each other, what does the overall shape of the distribution look like?
??? ? Extra: The probability of drawing a particular type of card also depends on the number of cards drawn each time. Try doing this activity again but draw samples of three, five or seven cards at a time. Do your chances improve as more cards are taken?
??? ? Extra: Probabilities can change your strategies for playing a card game. Can you design an experiment to show how probabilities can help you choose cards and win "Go Fish"? What about other popular card games? Can you invent your own game based on probabilities?

Sweden's H&M: Q3 profit rose slightly

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish fashion retailer Hennes and Mauritz on Thursday reported a tiny 1 percent rise in third-quarter net profits, saying that although its clothing lines sold well in the beginning of the summer, the European financial crisis and poor weather conditions in August restrained consumption more than expected at the end of the period.

It also said it plans to launch a new fashion brand, & Other Stories, in the first half of next year, which will be located in separate stores. The clothes will focus more on quality and will be higher priced than its normal fashion lines.

The Stockholm-headquartered group posted a net profit of 3.6 billion kronor ($549 million) in the three-month period, up slightly from 3.59 billion kronor in the year-ago period. Aside from lower-than-expected sales at the end of the summer, currency fluctuations also hurt its income.

Revenues came to 33.57 billion kronor, up from 31.51 billion kronor, but the gross margin shrank to 58.2 percent from 58.6 percent.

H&M said it will ramp up its expansion rate for the full year 2012, planning to open 300 new stores instead of the previously planned 275.

Student debt stretches to record 1 in 5 households

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With college enrollment growing, student debt has stretched to a record number of U.S. households ? nearly 1 in 5 ? with the biggest burdens falling on the young and poor.

The analysis by the Pew Research Center found that 22.4 million households, or 19 percent, had college debt in 2010. That is double the share in 1989, and up from 15 percent in 2007, just prior to the recession ? representing the biggest three-year increase in student debt in more than two decades.

The increase was driven by higher tuition costs as well as rising college enrollment during the economic downturn. The biggest jumps occurred in households at the two extremes of the income distribution. More well-off families are digging deeper into their pockets to pay for costly private colleges, while lower-income people in search of higher-wage jobs are enrolling in community colleges, public universities and other schools as a way to boost their resumes.

Because of the sluggish economy, fewer college students than before are able to settle into full-time careers immediately upon graduation, contributing to a jump in debt among lower-income households as the young adults take on part-time jobs or attend graduate school, according to Pew.

As a share of household income, the debt burden was the greatest for the poorest 20 percent of households, or those making less than $21,044. In all, 40 percent of U.S. households headed by someone younger than age 35 owed college debt, the highest share of any age group.

"Comparing the debt to their economic resources, the lowest-income fifth of households are the ones experiencing the greatest stresses," said Richard Fry, a senior economist at Pew who analyzed the numbers.

Noting that college enrollment has continued to climb since 2010, Fry added: "Until college enrollment peaks, I would not expect the amount of outstanding student debt to level off."

The study released Wednesday is based on the Survey of Consumer Finances, conducted every three years and sponsored by the Federal Reserve. The numbers are as of 2010, the latest available for that survey. Separate Fed data have pointed to subsequent increases in student loans since 2010 that totaled $914 billion in the April-June quarter, but don't provide demographic breakdowns on who shoulders the biggest burdens.

Both President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger in this year's election, Mitt Romney, have been seeking to court young voters with differing visions on how to address rising tuition and growing college debt. Obama wants to make tax credits for college expenses permanent and expand Pell grants for lower-earning families. Romney says that making government the direct source of federal student loans has not worked and simply drives tuition higher. He stresses the need to curb college costs.

The Pew report found that the richest 20 percent of households, or those with annual income of $97,586 or higher, owed the biggest share of outstanding student debt ? 31 percent, up from 28 percent in 2007. The poorest 20 percent of households also saw their debt grow, to 13 percent from 11 percent.

The richest households saw significant increases in per-household debt. For those with annual income of $97,586 to $146,791, college debt rose from $25,921 in 2007 to $31,989. For the richest 10 percent, making at least $146,792, college debt increased from $36,033 to $44,810.

Across all households, the average outstanding college debt increased from $23,349 to $26,682. For the poorest 20 percent of households, the average debt rose from $19,018 to $20,640.

In recent years, Americans have cut back on several other types of borrowing such as credit card use, with average household indebtedness falling from $105,297 in 2007 to $100,720 in 2010. Broken down by income levels, however, average total indebtedness for the bottom 20 percent of households by income actually rose from $17,579 in 2007 to $26,779; for the higher income groups, average indebtedness either was unchanged or declined.

How to get the same tax breaks that Romney did

By Linda Stern,Reuters

WASHINGTON -- Much was made of multimillionaire candidate Mitt Romney's tax status when he released his 2011 tax return on September 21. It showed an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent; many middle-income working Americans and the average wealthy person pay at higher rates than that.?

To be sure, tax experts didn't find anything illegal or underhanded about Romney's return. In fact, he and his wife, Ann, could have had an even lower tax rate had they not left money on the table, declining to take his full deduction for charitable gifts.

But there's no need to get mad when you can get even: Middle-income taxpayers can use a lot of the same write-offs that Romney used, and they don't have to go to Switzerland or the Cayman Islands to do it.

Here are some ways that the uber-rich cut their taxes that you can use, too.

Invest in stocks directly
Middle-income people tend to make most of their investments via mutual funds and 401(k) plans. Those retirement funds do give you an immediate write-off of your contribution, but here's what else they do: They turn capital gains, taxed at a maximum rate of 15 percent, into ordinary income, taxed at a maximum rate of 35 percent.

And mutual funds that own portfolios full of stocks are required to distribute their taxable gains annually. Average investors who own mutual funds (outside of tax-deferred retirement funds) therefore have to pay taxes on those gains every year, whether they sell shares and withdraw money or not.

Here's the way rich folk do it: They buy shares of solid dividend-paying companies directly. They take the dividend income, also typically taxed at a 15 percent maximum. They let the stocks roll. When a share price falls, they sell the stock at a loss, and use the loss to offset other gains. When they eventually sell stocks that have long-term gains, they only pay 15 percent tax on the gain.

Work for yourself
Romney made his fortune and avoided big taxes by founding his own investment company, Bain Capital. But even small kitchen-table businesses confer tax breaks on their owners. If you turn your hobby into a business, work as a consultant, or provide services like childcare, lawn mowing or driving, you can cash in on some of them. Self-employed people can buy all of their equipment, supplies and services and deduct the costs; they can travel to conferences and clients and write off their trips. They can deduct the cost of their health insurance and the costs of acquiring and maintaining a home office.

More importantly, they can set aside more money on a tax-deferred basis than the typical employee. Using defined benefit retirement plans and simplified employee pensions, people who own companies can set aside substantial amounts of money for their retirement. When they leave (or simply close) their companies, they can roll that money over into tax-deferred individual retirement accounts.

Be charitable
As Mormons who tithe and go beyond that with big gifts to numerous nonprofits, the Romneys have substantial charitable donations that are tax deductible. They didn't even take full advantage of that write-off on their 2011 tax return; perhaps to avoid having to show a return with an effective tax rate near 10 percent, according to some reports.

But the charitable deduction is a valuable one for less well-heeled taxpayers, too. People can donate money to groups that advance their own policy stances, such as Planned Parenthood or Project Ultrasound. They can donate to their own religious organizations, or their children's private schools and camps, or their local library and symphony orchestra. And so, they can reap benefits from those donations, and still deduct them from their taxable income.

In addition, individuals can reap surprisingly substantial deductions by donating their old clothing, housewares, electronics and vehicles to charitable organizations.

And those stocks that have accumulated big gains? If you give a charity an appreciated stock, you can deduct the whole gift and you don't have to pay money on the gain. So, shares worth $1,000 that you paid $500 for can be deducted at $1,000 when you give them away to a legitimate nonprofit.

Help the kids
The super wealthy are widely known to use trusts and other estate-planning vehicles to transfer money to their children and grandchildren in ways that avoid taxation. But less wealthy folks can do that too. Children are allowed to receive up to $1,900 in investment income before it is taxed at their parents rate. If your children are older than 19 (or over 24 if they are full-time students) and earn $35,350 or less, their tax rate on capital gains is zero. You can give them those same appreciated stocks and they will owe no taxes on the gain.

If you decide to do that, do it this year; the zero percent capital gains tax rate expires at the end of 2012, and it's renewal is far from certain.

MANHATTAN, KAN. -- Sometimes even batteries can use a boost of energy, according to the focus of a Kansas State University graduate student's research.

Steven Arnold Klankowski, a doctoral candidate in chemistry, La Crescent, Minn., is working under Jun Li, professor of chemistry, to develop new materials that could be used in future lithium-ion batteries. The materials look to improve the energy storage capacity of batteries so that laptops, cellphones, electric cars and other mobile devices will last longer between charges.

Additionally, lithium-ion batteries that can store energy and deliver power more rapidly will be a more viable alternative power source for vehicles and machines powered by alternative energy, Klankowski said. For example, solar- and wind-powered technologies could switch to the battery in the evening when there is a lack of wind or sunlight to produce energy.

"The battery market is moving very fast these days as everyone is trying to get an advantage for their electric vehicles and cellphones," said Klankowski, who also has a background in materials engineering. "As our devices get smarter, so must our methods to supply greater amounts of portable electrical energy to power these devices."

For his research, Klankowski is developing and testing a high-performance nanostructure of silicon coated onto carbon nanofibers for the use as an electrode in lithium-ion batteries. The electrodes, which look like a dense brush, give the battery greater charge capabilities and storage capacity. This is anticipated to replace current commercial electrodes that are made from simple carbon-based materials.

The material being developed and improved by Klankowski helps the electrode store roughly 10 times the amount of energy as current electrodes -- giving the batteries a 10-15 percent improvement in current battery technology.

"We're trying to go for higher energy capacity," Klankowski said. "To do that we're looking at if we can store more energy per the electrode's size or mass, and if we can use that energy more quickly to make the battery like a capacitor. Batteries and capacitors are on opposite sides of the energy storage field. We'd like to move them both closer together."

In the lab, Klankowski looks at how the characteristics of the lithium-silicon-alloy material differ with each production cycle and how those characteristics can be improved to move lithium-ion batteries closer to capacitors.

The material is also studied for its ability to store energy. Tests, which simulate a battery's operation, repeatedly charge and discharge the material with energy.

According to U.S. Department of Energy's requirements, a battery must remain at 80 percent capacity after 300 charge-discharge cycles.

"A battery today tends to die after 400-500 cycles or three years," Klankowski said. "One of the things we'll want to improve on is that lasting performance. It won't be much of an advantage if your phone's battery can last for 36 hours for the first few months but then only two hours after that. With the progress we are seeing, I hope one day to drive from Manhattan to my folks' house in Minnesota on a single battery change."

A patent application for the material has been filed with Kansas State University Research Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit corporation responsible for managing technology transfer activities at the university.

Klankowski was one of five doctoral students at Kansas State University to recently earn a scholarship from the research foundation to help him further develop his research.

Q4 Look Ahead: Investors Must Prepare Their 2 ... - Yahoo! Finance

As every football fan knows, most games are either won or lost in the final moments of play. So true is this harsh reality that teams practice their so-called "2-minute drills" more than any other set of plays or style of offense. In short, it's all about the 4th quarter and everybody knows it.

Coincidentally, the same holds true on Wall Street, where professional money managers and investors of all sizes are getting set to embark on their own 2-minute drills in hopes of securing a last second win. And just like the action on the gridiron, where things like the weather, remaining timeouts and player health all affect strategy, there are several unique investment variables that are sure to impact this year's financial finale as well.

"November 6th is obviously on everyone's radar," says Charlie Smith, chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital in the attached clip. "For sanity's sake of people who manage money and the managements of businesses around the world, we need to know how the fiscal cliff issue is going to come out," he says, naming politics and elections as the key determinant of the coming quarter; at least the first 7 weeks of it.

From his viewpoint, an Obama victory would likely lead to some sort of lame duck deal on raising taxes on super high earners ($750,000+ per year) paired with some negotiated wiggle room on mandatory defense cuts set to kick in in 2013.

Should Mitt Romney win and the Senate swing to Republican control, Smith says "all that goes off the table." He thinks a drastic change in sentiment would get capital off the sidelines where it has "been on strike for the past couple years."

Another key consideration is the fact that the benchmark stock indexes are up 10-15% year to date, while the average fund will go into the last 13 weeks of 2012 with only 3% gains. This performance disparity, while widely discussed, has yet to be reconciled.

"There's a big incentive for money managers to try and catch up," Smith says, "and if the 4th quarter gets out of the gates strong, I think we could see a wave of purchasing by managers looking to buy volatility, to buy beta so to speak, to try to drive performance." In short, it could lead to what he calls a "decent melt up."

On the flip side, if the early part of the October is marked by pronounced weakness (of 10% or more), that would suddenly push cash-hording laggards with a bearish bent to the fore.

Interestingly, with Alcoa (AA) set to report results and kick-off 3rd quarter earnings season on October 9th, Smith is conspicuously not that concerned about what he calls the tepid profit picture, saying "it's not going to be the focus." By his count, 3rd quarter earnings should grow by about 1%, and that as a result, not a lot of expectation is built in.

Fed-watching will also garner less attention going forward since the U.S. central bank decided to punt late in the 3rd quarter via its open-ended QE3. And Europe, if I had to guess, will resemble an instant replay, in as much as it probably won't implode or explode in the next 90 days, any more than it did in the prior 90 days.

What's your game plan for the 4th quarter? Will you be running out the clock (sitting on gains) or trying to force a turnover and put some points on the score board?

Aviation: Finnair Goes Green with Eco Friendly Jet Engines - Typepad

Environment

Finland's flag carrier Finnair has selected IAE International Aero Engines AG to supply engines for the airline's five new Airbus A321 extended range aircraft, which will join the Finnish airline's fleet in September 2013.

The IAE V2533-A5 engines will offer Finnair a significant advantage in fuel efficiency over competing air carriers, saving the airline about 300 tons of fuel per year per aircraft, according to Airbus test data, the Finnish airline says.

The engines also operate well within noise limitations set by ICAO and the European Union.

Finnair announced in June 2010 an order for five Airbus aircraft to replace the four Boeing 757s currently in the air Finnish air carrier's fleet.

Quieter, More Comfortable, More Fuel Efficient

The new Airbus 321s will be quieter and more comfortable for passengers as well as about 5% more fuel efficient than its existing airplanes. The move also enables more flexibility and interoperability between European scheduled and leisure flights, driving up aircraft utilization and further reducing per-passenger emissions.

?The IAE engines on these aircraft allow us to enhance the customer experience while also saving on fuel costs and making a substantial dent in our carbon profile,? says Chief Operating Officer Ville Iho.

?They are essential to remaining competitive in the tough market in European narrow-body traffic, both scheduled and leisure.?

HBT: Wright ties all-time Mets hit record

Everyone on the planet noted it when Derek Jeter tied and then broke the Yankees all-time hit record, so we may as well note it for David Wright: last night he tied?Ed Kranepool for the most hits in franchise history, with 1,418.

Kranepool was more of a story of?perseverance, of course, as he took nine more seasons and nearly 600 more games to do it. Still, pretty cool.

Without looking, I?m going to take some time this morning and see if I can figure out the hits leaders for each team. I bet I can get, like, 15 of them. ?Maybe you guys ? on the honor system ? should play that game in the comments.

Selling Real Estate In Trying Economical Times | Eric Chua : Life - First

No matter who you are, you probably are going to either buy or sell real estate at some point in your life. Since many people find selling real estate to be difficult and confusing, the following article will make things clearer, giving you crucial real estate advice.

Housing markets are season-driven in many areas of the country. Using fall decorations can help create a welcoming environment to potential buyers. Always make sure that the leaves are raked from the lawn; this presents a more tidy appearance and boosts curb appeal.

Have your home?s heating and air conditioning systems checked for proper working order before you put the home on the market. Most buyers don?t want to purchase a home that is going to require a large investment such as a furnace. Having a working AC and heater are appealing to buyers.

TIP! Be realistic about the value you put on your property. Look at properties in your immediate neighborhood and then put your own valuation somewhere between the highest and the lowest.

Unless your flooring is in terrible shape, with large stains or bald spots, the investment in new flooring should be put on the back burner. New flooring is an expensive investment, and you will not be the one enjoying it. Instead, just do a thorough cleaning of the existing flooring, mindful to fix up any trouble spots that might put buyers off.

Get rid of the clutter if you want potential buyers to find your home appealing. Your closets should be clean and well-organized, with the very minimum of items stored in them. Also clean kitchen cabinets, but think about making them appear more sophisticated by adding in some gourmet items.

If you plan to list a property within the next few months, you should employ a variety of marketing channels to boost your visibility. You can use multiple sales tools like Internet websites, the classified ads in the local paper and contracting with a reputable real estate agent to sell your property. To be effective, you need to keep all your options open to reach the widest audience you can.

TIP! You can design a webpage on Facebook or Twitter that features your agency or properties. You?ll be able to tweet or post new property information, promotions and real estate and home improvement tips.

Seriously consider the consequences of investing in real estate before you decide to engage in this venture. Inexperienced investors often learn too late that the stakes can be high when you?re a new player in the game. Spend plenty of time researching the business before you hand over any money for property.

You?re wasting precious time if you deliberately overprice your home listing with the intention of having more haggling room in negotiations. If you set your home?s price too high outside of other prices in your area, potential buyers won?t even stop to look. Don?t let your house sit on the market due to overpricing. Determine its fair market value before you list it for the first time.

Just by making some small updates in your kitchen you can make people want to buy your home. You might want to switch out one appliance to update the look and provide a focal point. Adding a wood block island fixture and hanging storage is also a popular kitchen upgrade. If you cannot afford to change your cabinetry, apply a fresh coat of paint on it.

TIP! Be sure the counter tops and appliances are clean. Make sure the floors are swept and mopped, and that the bathroom is clean.

Of the many investments people make in a lifetime, real estate purchases are usually the largest. It is vital that you know as much as you possibly can about real estate selling, in order to help you when the time comes to sell your real property. When followed properly, the advice in this article will help maximize your chances of realizing an advantageous

The Online Dating Game and The Incredible Business Minds Behind It

Online dating attracts approximately 1.4 billion consumers worldwide. At least 7 million of those people frequent free internet dating site, PlentyofFish.com. The domain was created and abandoned by Markus Frind in 2001, only to be resurrected 2 years later in 2003 when Frind began to suspect that his real job was in jeopardy.

It took some time for the site to catch on, but once Frind discovered the many wonders of SEO marketing and Adsense, things took off quickly. The traffic on his site built up and PlentyofFish.com began to take off.

It?s hard to believe that Frind is nonchalant about his recent triumphs. Frind speaks with a quiet conviction in his interviews and his words are animated by shrugs that seem to suggest that he?s discussing facts that everyone should already be aware of.

Frind knows that Plentyoffish.com has already left its competitors in the dust. The site receives at least 2.8 billion page views per month, and its newly launched mobile app has been downloaded by one million users. Other sites can?t seem to keep up with Plenty of Fish, but the site certainly has an advantage. Plentyoffish.com is completely free for its users. (There is a paid option but it?s not necessary.)

The Numbers Game: It?s Relative

According to statistics offered by Frind, Plentyoffish.com is sporting some impressive numbers:

  • PlentyofFish.com is frequented by 723 million visitors per month, comparable to Match.com
  • PlentyofFish.com users send about 5.5 billion email messages yearly, nearly 4 times as much as Match.com users

Of course, numbers are always subject to interpretation. Comparing PlentyofFish.com?s 5 million regular users to Match.com?s 1.9 million subscribers isn?t exactly fair. It?s more like comparing apples to oranges since PlentyofFish.com is a free site and Match.com users must pay for a subscription to the site. Online matchmaking is not unlike the news industry; a great deal of time is spent on locating the right numbers in order to convince users and advertisers that a particular brand is stronger than the next.

Everyone is a Winner!

If dating sites were evaluated on statistics alone and not unbiased dating site reviews, it would appear that almost every online dating site was a winner. Everyone?s claim to fame is associated with a different type of statistics, and it?s not always clear how each site collects their data.

Many online dating sites are claiming their success based on the number of marriages between users. Some cite the number of connections facilitated by the site, and some claim their fame via the number of users the site currently has.

PlentyofFish.com has an interesting motto. Their claim to fame is ?More dates, more relationships than any other dating site.?

Frind admits that his measurement methods probably aren?t the most scientific. Essentially the site measures success by how many users leave the site, stating that they?ve recently entered into a relationship. He then speculates further, using a widely accepted average of 12.5% ?the percentage of most relationships that end in marriages to determine how many user relationships have led to marriage. Of course, none of this can be validated without a massive worldwide survey, but no one has been ambitious enough to attempt that just yet.

PlentyofFish.com has had its share of rough patches, just like most relationships. In January of 2011 the site was hacked and the site?s users names and passwords were uncovered by hackers. The security holes were patched immediately and there have been no more incidents.

Show Me the Money

One might wonder how a free dating site like PlentyofFish.com makes money without requiring users to subscribe. It?s actually quite simple. The site charges a reasonable rate for advertising fees and rakes in over 25 million in revenue per year.

Online dating sites are part of a virgin industry which has only been around since 1995, so there isn?t a great deal of data to work with. Weighing any statistical results is a challenge.

The only truly accurate method for measuring is evaluating the money that is coming in. Of course, Match.com brings in more revenues. Individual users are required to pay subscription fees, while PlentyofFish.com?s users don?t have to pay a thing. PlentyofFish.com is supported by advertising, and its revenue is much less than Match.com?s $400 million.

Still, PlentyofFish.com isn?t hurting with its 25 million in revenue per year and is one of the best dating sites online. Frind isn?t fazed by the numbers; he insists that any site can bring in $100 million. He?s just not interested in pursuing that at the moment.
