Hope reigns as US rings in 2012, after dud 2011 (AP)
NEW YORK ? Times Square was awash in hopeful sentiments as it prepared to welcome hordes of New Year's Eve revelers looking to cast off a rough year and cheer their way to something better in 2012.
For all of the holiday's bittersweet potential, New York City always treats it like a big party ? albeit one that, for a decade now, has taken place under the watchful eye of a massive security force.
Pessimism has no place on Broadway. Not this week, anyway. The masses of tourists who began streaming through the square Friday for a glimpse of the crystal-paneled ball that drops at midnight Saturday were there to kiss, pose for silly snapshots and gawk at the stages being prepared for performers like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Glum wasn't on the agenda, even for those whose 2011 ended on a sour note.
"2012 is going to be a better year. It has to be," said Fred Franke, 53, who was visiting the city with his family even after losing his job in military logistics this month at a Honeywell International division in Jacksonville, Fla.
And here at the "Crossroads of the World," reminders of a trying 2011 around the globe could be seen in the multi-national faces of awe-struck visitors.
Asked how his 2011 went, a Japanese tourist who gave his name as Nari didn't know enough English to put it into words, so he whipped open his phone and displayed pictures he had taken of damage wrought by the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the island nation and his home city of Sendai.
"Not a good year," he said. Then he smiled and added that things are now much better.
Moments after he spoke, the crowd oohed and cheered as workers lit the ball and put it through a test run, 400 feet above the street. The sphere, now decorated with 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles, has been dropping to mark the new year since 1907, long before television made it a national tradition.
"Not to be corny, but I think the American ideal is to be optimistic. It's in our character," said Sajari Hume, 22, of New York, whose own 2011 wasn't all that bad. He joined the Army National Guard, found a sense of purpose he hadn't had before, and is now planning on going to school and feeling pretty good about the future.
"I think we're at a turning point. People want something to look forward to. And what better place to celebrate that possibility than right here," he said, pausing to accept the well wishes of a group of visiting tourists from London, who stopped to shake his hand after seeing his fatigues.
Other tourists posed with police officers, of which there were many. Port Authority police officers beefed up security checkpoints at the city's bridges and tunnels in anticipation of the celebration. The New York Police Department's plans for protecting the city from any terror attack included sending 1,500 rookie officers to Times Square, where hundreds of thousands of revelers pack into closely-watched pens, ringed by barricades, stretched over 17 blocks. Officers, some heavily armed, others wearing radiation detectors and some blending into the crowd in street clothes, will also watch from rooftops and helicopters.
Cautious hope was the watchword elsewhere, too.
In New Orleans, crowds in the French Quarter were starting to build Friday, with New Year's visitors rubbing elbows with college football fans flocking here for Tuesday's Sugar Bowl matchup between Michigan and Virginia Tech.
"People are tired of being stressed and poor," said David Kittrell, a glass gallery owner from Dallas visiting the Crescent City for its New Year's celebrations with his wife, Barbara. The couple has endured a rough few years, as the recession cut into their sales. But they said business had been getting better.
Several people preparing to celebrate the holiday told the AP that they would usher in the New Year hoping the U.S. Congress would become a more cooperative place. Some talked about their hopes for the presidential election. Others said they hoped to hold on to their job, or find a new one to replace one they'd lost.
An Associated Press-GfK poll conducted Dec. 8-12 found that 62 percent of Americans are optimistic that the nation's fortunes would improve in 2012, and 78 percent hopeful that their own family would have a better year. Most wrote off 2011 as a dud.
Gina Aragones, of suburban Chicago, says she has a simple reason for being optimistic about 2012: It can't be any worse. In 2011, complications from gallbladder surgery kept her from working. That led to her being laid off from her job as a clerk. The cascade chased her from her Chicago home to less expensive accommodations more than an hour northwest of the city.
"I'm excited to do away with 2011, I'll tell you that," Aragones said as she readied to spend New Year's Eve at home with her husband and two children, ages 13 and 9, dining on a seafood feast.
"I could cry every day," she said. "But I don't think that's going to help my children, help the mood in the home every day. I try to stay positive."

Did the Apple iPhone outsell Android at AT&T's corporate locations by nearly 8 to 1 this month?
According to a source for the Mac Observer, the Apple iPhone represented a large part of AT&T's sales this month. From December 1st through the 27th, two-thirds of the carrier's sales were for Apple's iconic touchscreen device if the information passed along by the tipster is correct. Based on that information, AT&T's iPhone sales outnumbered the combination of all of the carrier's Android phones by 7.8 to 1.
According to Mac Observer, 981,000 copies of the iPhone were sold by AT&T for the month through this past Tuesday while at the same time 126,000 Android handsets were sold by the second largest carrier in the country. Some might consider the numbers to be incorrect considering that the source claims that AT&T's sales of featurephones at 128,000 units was greater than Android sales.
It must be understood that the sales figures are for corporate stores only. This would eliminate phones sold at authorized resellers, telephone and website orders, and other stores that carry AT&T phones like Best Buy and Radio Shack. The fact that these stats only are for a small fraction of AT&T's overall sales might account for the overly lopsided nature of the figures. In addition, Android models own a greater than 50% share of the U.S. smartphone market which would make the nearly 8 to 1 ratio seem unlikely.AT&T has sold? more than 6 million units of the Apple iPhone in the last two quarters and expects to do even better in the current three month period. The three models of the phone offered by the carrier, the Apple iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS accounted for 56% of AT&T's sales in Q3 and if Mac Observer's source is right, that figure rises to 66% in Q4 at AT&T's corporate locations. Featurephones come in next at 8.6% of AT&T's sales with Android third at 8.5%. We might have to see a listing of all of AT&T's quarterly sales before we can come to a legitimate conclusion.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, an estimated 410 Georgia women were newly diagnosed with cervical cancer in Georgia in 2011. ?January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and Fulton County Health Services encourages all women to take control of their health by having annual cervical cancer screenings known as Pap tests and to make healthier lifestyle choices.??
If detected and treated early, cervical cancer is 90% curable.? In Georgia, it is estimated that 134 women die of cervical cancer each year. Symptoms of early stage cervical cancer or pre-cancer are not easily identified and often have no signs or symptoms. ?Women 21 and older need to have regular Pap tests to monitor cervical health.?
All women who have not had a hysterectomy are at risk of developing cervical cancer.? Many cervical cancer risk factors are linked to lifestyle behaviors.? Risks include: having multiple sexual partners; smoking or a history of smoking; early age of first sexual encounters, being overweight; not using barrier methods of birth control such as condoms; and not getting regular Pap tests.
Cervical cancer is the 12th most common cancer diagnosed in Georgia women.? Early detection through routine screening has reduced cervical cancer to less than one percent of cancer deaths in the United States.? All women under the age of 26 are encouraged to get the HPV vaccine for added protection against cervical cancer and other diseases such as genital warts.? Pelvic examinations, Pap tests and the HPV vaccine are available at health centers for eligible low-income and uninsured women through the BreasTEST & MORE prevention program.

Get and keep copies of documents, including receipts and permits, describing home upgrades and inspections of your house. Some homeowners have reported that the stickers on their doors and windows showing they?re impact-resistant are fading. Take digital photos of the stickers before that happens. Keep Miami-Dade County Notice of Acceptance records and copies of roof and other permits that verify when the upgrades were made and which building code applied. Sandy Teich, of Coconut Creek, reported her insurer has agreed to refund more than $500 this week based on the NOA documents.
Compare the new inspection report to the old one. If your first one was done before April 2009 and your second one after that, it may explain some of the discrepancies; The state changed a form used to verify discounts then.
Contact the inspector you originally hired for help reviewing the new inspection. Several homeowners who have been successful getting discounts reinstated did it with the help of their former inspectors. For instance, Bob Cornish, a retiree in Delray Beach, said he had an inspection done and shopped around for insurance before he purchased his home this year. Still, he said his insurer, Citizens Property Insurance, sent its own inspection firm months later and based on that, planned to raise his $1,750 premium by about $600.
Cornish said his old inspector ?went nuts? when he told him what happened and helped him verify that the nails used in attaching his roof to his home were more than two inches long ? unlike what was stated in the new inspection ? because both old and new photos showed they went completely through the two-inch plywood. His inspector also noticed that the size of the sheathing in the new inspector?s photos looked like it was different ? only because he used a different type of ruler. ?Who uses [that kind] of a ruler?? Cornish said. ?In my opinion, it was a very shady mistake. [Then again] who knows how many jobs they do a day?? so it could have been an innocent mistake.
Cornish also contested the new inspector?s finding that nails on his home?s beams were not 6 inches apart. ?He found one beam where the nail was 7 inches apart because the seam was there so there was not going to be a nail on it,? Cornish said. ?How long did it take him to find that one nail??
All of his discounts were reinstated.
Check if changes in state rules on discounts will affect you. Changes to a state form used to verify discounts take effect Feb. 1 so Mike Rohrbaugh, Cornish?s original inspector, said he plans to email all of his former customers to offer to fill out the new form for $25 each. Rohrbaugh said his firm, Home Team Inspection Service in Pompano Beach, has all the photos and documents on file so it should take him about an hour to do each one.
Some of the changes are expected to help homeowners. For instance, the new form allows discounts for tile roofs; roofs attached to a home that don?t have the exact measurements required in the old form but have an equivalent wind-resistance rating; and roofs attached to the walls with two nails on one side and one on the other ? common in South Florida, Rohrbaugh said. The last change could help homeowners save up to $500 a year, he added.
Get help from the state if the insurer discontinued a discount without an independent inspection conducted to verify or dispute the original inspection results.
