Santorum refuses to bow despite another loss

BEMIDJI, Minn. (AP) ? Rick Santorum has lost four straight contests.

Not that you would know it by watching him on the campaign trail, where the perpetually optimistic candidate has been drawing standing-room-only crowds and promising his political fortunes will improve if he can make it to just one more state.

"The more that this campaign evolves, the better we are going to look to be the best candidate to defeat Barack Obama," the former Pennsylvania senator said Sunday as he toured the factory that produces the sweater vests he sells for fundraising. "I feel confident that we're going to do well here in Minnesota. We're going to do well in Missouri on Tuesday and I think we're also going to do well in Colorado. At least I hope to do well in Bemidji anyway."

A day earlier, he came in last place in Nevada. He didn't mention the latest setback when he attended church services Sunday, showing no sign the GOP contest was slipping through his fingers.

"I'm trying to walk the path that Christ has laid out for me. I'm just trying to discern his will," he said during services at Eden Prairie's Grace Church. "I will leave it up to him as to how everything turns out."

Taking his ragtag campaign across the country, Santorum hopes to amass enough delegates to the Republican convention this summer to earn greater stature within the party even if he fails to achieve the GOP nomination.

It's been a month since Santorum narrowly won the Iowa caucuses and, while outright victory may be out of reach in the next states to vote, he's looking to make a statement here and in Colorado. In Missouri, Newt Gingrich is not on the ballot, giving Santorum a better chance to make an impression against frontrunner Mitt Romney.

Minnesota could be fertile territory for Santorum, with its small contingent of highly conservative caucus-goers. It borders Iowa, where Santorum was the declared winner in the campaign's lead-off caucuses a month ago.

He is also looking at Colorado, where deeply conservative evangelicals have an unshakable foothold. Santorum has picked up the backing of prominent social conservative and Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, who joined him for campaign appearances in recent days.

To be sure, Santorum faces an uphill battle to win the party nod.

Santorum has little money and virtually no momentum. He's trailing badly in national polls. He's had trouble getting on ballots in Virginia and Indiana. And he has essentially no staff in upcoming states ? much less anything resembling the national operations his rivals are running.

He no longer has a national campaign headquarters; technically, he calls a post office box in Pennsylvania his base camp. His inner circle is seldom in the same location. His campaign manager is a New Hampshire consultant. His deputy campaign manager is Iowa-based and was only recently named to that role in an official capacity. His senior political adviser runs a firm in South Carolina and calls it home.

Santorum's accommodations are sometimes determined by which supporter has an extra guest room, and his transportation sometimes is a volunteer's pickup truck. And when reporters have questions, they simply walk over to the senator and ask him instead of calling his spokespeople in Pennsylvania, Washington or South Carolina.

Yet, his team celebrates its off-the-cuff style. Some only just recently started getting paychecks, and some of the people who have day-to-day responsibility for his events aren't on the payroll yet.

"We are running this campaign on a shoestring," Santorum says. "But that is an insult to shoestrings."

He and his aides insist the nomination is still not out of reach.

They count themselves as students of how Barack Obama won the Democrats' nomination four years ago: don't look at the win/loss column and instead focus on the slow accumulation of convention delegates.

Under GOP rules that are new this year, anyone who gets a certain portion of the vote in each state qualifies for a delegate to the GOP convention in Tampa. So while Romney and Gingrich are assailing each other, Santorum and his aides argue, he gets the chance to introduce himself to more voters and pick up delegates here and there on the cheap.

"There is a chance that we could go to the convention," Santorum argued in Fallon, Nev., last week. "I don't think that's a bad thing. I think that would be a healthy thing. From my perspective, the longer this primary goes on, the better."

Santorum is banking on Gingrich collapsing under Romney's withering criticism, leaving Santorum in the coveted and fluid role of the leading conservative alternative to Romney.

For now at least, Santorum is attracting standing-room only crowds and hoping voters grow weary of the Romney-Gingrich rivalry.

"Every time you hear about this race, it's just Romney and Gingrich," said Cheryl Rawlings, a 59-year-old retiree from Hannibal, Mo., who met with Santorum at the Mark Twain Dinette on Friday. "Santorum isn't making the headlines, but look at the people outside here waiting to meet him. This is not a two-man race no matter what the media would like."

America's Most Miserable Cities | Miami Finance Forum

Miami ?is a playground for the rich and famous. Celebrities flock to parties at South Beach clubs and then return to their $10 million mansions in Miami Beach and Key Biscayne. It?s a leading city in culture, finance and international trade. But away from the glitz and glamour, many ordinary Miamians are struggling.

A crippling housing crisis has cost multitudes of residents their homes and jobs. The metro area has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country and workers face lengthy daily commutes. Add it all up and Miami takes the top spot in our ranking of America?s Most Miserable Cities.

The most famous way to gauge misery is the Misery Index developed by economist Arthur Okun in the 1960s, which combines unemployment and inflation. Our take on misery is based on the things that people complain about on a regular basis.

We looked at 10 factors for the 200 largest metro areas and divisions in the U.S. Some are serious, like violent crime, unemployment rates, foreclosures, taxes (income and property), home prices and political corruption. Other factors we included are less weighty, like commute times, weather and how the area?s pro sports teams did. While sports, commuting and weather can be considered trivial by many, they can be the determining factor in the level of misery for a significant number of people. One tweak to this year?s list: we swapped out sales tax rates for property tax rates. Miami would have finished No. 1 under the old methodology as well (click?here?for more details about the criteria for the list).

In Miami there is a growing divide between the top 1% and the rest of the metro area. Life is good for the likes of?LeBron James?and Latin pop crooner Enrique Iglesias, who?s building a $20 million compound on a private island with girlfriend Anna Kournikova, but if you?re among the 75% of households with an annual income under $75,000, it can be a hard place. The median home price is down 41% the past three years, sixth worst in the country, to $169,000. It?s great news for first-time homebuyers; not so great for the 47% of homeowners in Miami sitting on underwater mortgages.

A whopping 364,000 properties in the Miami area have entered the foreclosure process since 2008, according to?RealtyTrac. The number of foreclosure filings slowed in Miami and across the country last year, but the housing market is far from a comeback.

Miami voters are fed up. Last year 88% voted to throw Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez out of office in the biggest recall ever of a municipal government official. They were dissatisfied with property tax hikes he pushed though during Miami?s real estate meltdown, while doling out raises to staffers at the same time. Miami residents were further outraged by the city and county covering 80% of the cost of the Florida Marlins $634 million stadium set to open in April despite the Marlins turning fat profits in recent years.

To replace Alvarez, Miamians selected retired firefighter Carlos Gimenez in an election that featured Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew fame, who famously was brought up on public obscenity charges for performing songs from his album ?As Nasty As They Wanna Be.? The controversial rapper, who promoted an exotic dancer tax during his mayoral campaign, finished fourth with 11% of the vote. Consider: 11% of voters thought ?Uncle Luke? would be the best choice to run the eighth most populous county in the U.S.

Gimenez?s office took issue with Forbes? use of some data from 2010 for our ranking.? ?We?ve completed a number of initiatives and infrastructure projects during the past two years, which if used in the measurement criteria for your report, would dramatically change its result towards a much more positive position for Miami-Dade county,? the mayor?s office said in a statement. ?In addition, our crime rate has been moving downward steadily, our property taxes were dramatically reduced last year by over $200 million,?and our unemployment rate has been reduced by around 30% since last summer and continues to move downward.?

Miami has local company in misery on our list: the?West Palm Beachmetropolitan division ranks fourth and?Fort Lauderdale?is seventh. Both areas have been hit hard by the housing crises.

South Florida politics have long been stained by corruption, which we factor into our list based on data from the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice on the number of politicians convicted of crimes. Southern Florida has had 354 public officials convicted of crimes over the past decade, which is one of the highest rates in the country on a per capita basis.

The latest trouble in the West Palm Beach area involves the mayor of Boynton Beach, Jose Rodriguez, who was suspended from his office last month by Gov. Rick Scott after Rodriguez was arrested for allegedly using his position to obstruct a child abuse probe involving his wife?s estranged daughter.

The Miami Heat brought Florida sports fans much joy when it paired James and Dwyane Wade in 2010 and the duo led the Heat to the NBA Finals. The rest of the Miami pro sports scene is pure misery, with the Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins and Florida Panthers all among the worst teams in their respective sports last year (the Panthers have rebounded this season).

Michigan?s troubled duo of Detroit and Flint clock in at No. 2 and No. 3 among the most miserable cities. The cities have been reeling for decades due to the decline of the U.S. auto industry and in recent years have been demolishing houses to change their city landscapes. Detroit has closed schools and cut wages for government employees, while Michigan appointed an emergency manager last year to take over Flint?s budget and operations. Detroit and Flint rank No. 1 and No. 3 when it comes to violent crime, and unemployment over the past three years in both communities has also been among the worst in the U.S.

Last year?s most miserable city, Stockton, ranks No. 11 this year. Stockton got a boost as housing prices have stabilized to some degree after a 45% drop between 2006 and 2008. They also benefited from our replacement of sales tax rates with property taxes in the methodology (Stockton would have finished No. 6 under the old methodology). Stockton still has plenty of problems, though. It ranks among the country?s six worst when it comes to unemployment, foreclosures and violent crime.

AMHERSTBURG ? National sledge hockey teams from Canada and the United States hit the ice at the UCCU Complex last week as the teams prepare the players to try and make the 2014 Paralympics.

Three games were played at the UCCU Complex with afternoon games played Thursday and Friday afternoons and a decisive third game played Saturday night. The U.S. won the first game Thursday 3-2 but Canada rebounded Friday afternoon with a 2-0 victory. Saturday night?s rubber match saw Canada win 3-1 to take the series two games to one.

Adam Crockatt, manager of hockey operations for Canadian national teams, said holding the three-game series in Amherstburg made sense from a geographical standpoint with the Canada-U.S. border being nearby. However, Amherstburg stood out for another reason, he noted.

?The biggest reason is the facility,? said Crockatt. ?This facility is fantastic for sledge hockey.?

Crockatt pointed out that many on the Canadian team have played together before, either as part of the national development program or through Team Ontario. He noted two players from last season?s team have made the national senior team.

?I think the guys are excited,? he said, of playing in the three-game series.

?It?s always an honor to put on the Canadian jersey and play for your country,? said Team Canada?s Brendan Blanchard.

Blanchard is familiar with the UCCU Complex, as he practices there each Wednesday as a member of the Essex-Kent Ice Bullets.

?It?s a great facility. It?s one of the best I?ve played at,? said Blanchard.

Former Western Hockey League player Chris Cederstrand said he appreciated the opportunity to play for the Canadian national program.

?It?s fantastic,? said Cederstrand. ?It?s something I didn?t get to do while playing stand-up hockey.?

Cederstrand, who lost most of his right leg five years ago after a construction accident, said the complex ?looks great? but was especially looking forward to playing the U.S. squad. He said there is always a rivalry between Canada and the United States.

?I don?t think it matters what sport you play, there is an animosity between the two teams,? said Cederstrand.

Cederstrand noted that he just started playing sledge hockey about three months ago and is enjoying it. He added it is ?a dream come true to represent your country.?

?This will be a competition weekend for us,? said Team USA head coach Mike MacMillan.

MacMillan, also the national coach-in-chief for USA Hockey, said the Canadian team chose Amherstburg as the location for this series of three exhibition games. The next three, scheduled for April, will be in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The American coach indicated at a practice Wednesday morning there was some rust on his team after not being together for over one month but he did like the surroundings of where his club was practicing and playing.

?We drove up in the parking lot and I was amazed,? he said. ?In the middle of a field is this amazing complex.?

The job of the development team, explained MacMillan, is to develop players that will compete for spots on the national team that will go to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Paralympics.

Jeremy Kennedy, general manager of the American squad, said it was the third time the U.S. squad has been together this season. Kennedy noted three of the players were veterans, having lost limbs in the combat overseas.

Little Ice Age began with a bang

Frozen moss suggests climate cooling kicked off fast, possibly with help from volcanoes

The Little Ice Age, a centuries-long spell of cold summers in Europe and elsewhere, began suddenly late in the 13th century, a new study finds. A string of volcanic explosions may have set off this change in climate by belching particles that reflected sunlight and allowed Arctic sea ice to reach epic proportions, researchers report online January 31 in Geophysical Research Letters.

?We?ve been able to identify the beginning of the Little Ice Age, something that?s been very difficult to do in the past,? says Gifford Miller, a paleoclimatologist and geologist at the University of Colorado Boulder. ?This cooling wasn?t gradual; it was an abrupt shift.?

It?s long been known that much of the globe became chillier during the Renaissance. By the 17th century, temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere had fallen by half a degree Celsius compared with medieval times. Ice skating on London?s frozen River Thames became popular.

To pin down when this climate change began, Miller?s team traveled to Baffin Island on the northern fringes of Canada. Small glaciers in this region tend to respond quickly to temperature changes. Carbon dating of moss entombed in Baffin?s ice revealed two sudden advances of the snow line that killed off the vegetation: a sudden cold spell between 1275 to 1300, followed by intensifying cold between 1430 and 1455.

Testing whether this chill extended beyond Canada took the researchers to the Langj?kull glacier, the second largest ice cap in Iceland. Layered sediments from a nearby lake appeared progressively thicker in the 14th century ? exactly what would be expected if the glacier expanded and ground away the landscape.

These chillier conditions began during an especially active time for volcanoes. ?The second half of the 13th century had the most volcanism of any period of the past 1,500 years,? says Alan Robock, an atmospheric scientist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

Volcanoes have been blamed for the Little Ice Age before. But the cooling produced by an eruption tends to be short-lived. The atmosphere recovers from the junk spewed into the sky within a few years.? The challenge is to explain how the Little Ice Age persisted for many centuries.?

?It?s been hard to understand how volcanism could lead to such long-lasting cooling,? says Stephen Vavrus, a climate scientist at the University of Wisconsin?Madison.

Sea ice may have been the secret to keeping Earth frosty. In simulations of global climate run by Miller?s team, volcanic eruptions stimulated the growth of Arctic ice. Normally, this ice would melt back during summer months. But a series of four explosions, each within a decade of the last, could have expanded the ice enough to make it stable, says Miller.

Polar ice samples have revealed just such a series of eruptions, says Robock: an especially big explosion somewhere in the world in 1258, and three smaller ones in 1268, 1275 and 1284.

Whether these events could have kicked off the Little Ice Age still isn?t certain. Two occurred in the Southern Hemisphere, which may have muted their impact. And some of the simulations run by Miller?s team didn?t lead to supersized sea ice cover, even with four eruptions.

Still, the new study offers a plausible chain of events, says Robock, ready to be put to the test by other climate simulations.
