Romney tries to come across as a man of the people (AP)

MASON CITY, Iowa ? Dressed in jeans, shirt sleeves rolled up, Mitt Romney reminisced before a noontime crowd about the long car trips his family took when he was a boy. "My dad made Ramblers, so we had one," the Republican presidential hopeful said.

In fact, Romney's father didn't just make cars. He was chairman and president of American Motors, the company that made Ramblers, and a highly successful businessman before he entered politics. It's a detail the son omitted as he sought to establish a bond with Iowans he hopes will support him in next week's presidential caucuses.

An oversight, perhaps ? he sometimes mentions George Romney's titles ? but Romney's effort to come across as a man of the people has been anything but a smooth transition.

One woman recently told him that she had to endure a five-hour commute to work because her company moved out of state. How could he help keep good jobs in Iowa, she asked.

"Sometimes it's counterintuitive," replied Romney, a former businessman, explaining that businesses often invent new, more efficient ways to compete.

"The term is called productivity. Output per person," he said. "Our productivity equals our income."

In the final stretch of the Iowa caucus campaign, Romney has stepped out from behind the curtain of private fundraising events that for months shielded him from unscripted encounters with voters.

During two bus tours through Iowa and New Hampshire, he has overhauled his campaign style. He has done interview after interview. He's knocked on doors and spent hours taking questions from voters in town hall meetings.

His wife, Ann, introduces him at almost every stop, as she did in Mason City on Thursday when she said, "It was Mitt who brought me through my darkest hour" ? an apparent reference to how her husband stood by her through a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

She's sat next to him during TV interviews. In a rare display of public emotion, Romney's voice nearly caught as he talked about her struggle with MS on a Sunday news show.

"We're finding that as we run ads that talk about our personal background, our personal beliefs, that that increased support for my campaign," he told reporters who followed his New Hampshire bus tour the week before Christmas. He was explaining his latest TV ads in Iowa ? one highlighted his background as a man of "steadiness and constancy," the other featured his wife talking directly to the camera about his character.

Yet he can still struggle to connect with people on a personal level.

When one retired firefighter in New Hampshire said he was drawing a reduced Social Security check because he also had a state pension, the former Massachusetts governor was less than sympathetic. "If there's a competition for who will give you the most free stuff, go vote for that guy."

When the man said he wasn't asking for any handouts, Romney said, "You knew what you were getting into. ... I wish you well, but I'm not going to promise you more bucks."

He's not always distant. At an earlier stop in New Hampshire, Romney explained how he lived on a careful budget as a Mormon missionary, using crude toilets and living in modest apartments. He also talked about his time as a lay pastor in Boston's Mormon church, when he says he counseled struggling families.

"When people don't have a job and they don't feel like they're contributing to the betterment of their family and their future, they get pretty depressed," he told the crowd. "Being out of work for a long time is real tough and it's not the fault of the person's that out of work."

When a voter in Bethlehem, N.H., asked him how her elderly friends would get through the winter with the price of heating fuel so high, Romney didn't hesitate.

"You're finding throughout this country that it's harder and harder on middle-income families," he said. "The costs of oil, the costs of food, and health care have all gone up."

But when he's trying to connect one-on-one, he sometimes hits notes that sound jarring.

As he stood at the cash register at a Concord, N.H., toy store, picking up a few gifts for charity, a patron asked him what he gave his family for Christmas. Earlier in the day, he had bought his wife a $285 North Face jacket as a gift, he said.

For his sons?

"We sent them checks," said Romney, a multimillionaire. "Cash is always good."

Gary Johnson sets third-party pot bubbling as he quits GOP race

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson said Wednesday he is quitting the Republican primaries and will run for president as a Libertarian, highlighting the possibility a third-party candidate could impact the 2012 election.

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson said Wednesday that he is quitting the Republican primaries and will run for president as a Libertarian, highlighting the possibility a third-party candidate could play a role in deciding the 2012 presidential election.

Governor Johnson was not a factor in the battle between Republican candidates now raging in Iowa. As a result of his meager performance in the polls, he was excluded from all but two of this year?s 15 Republican presidential debates.?

Barring a major surge in his appeal to voters, Johnson?s switch of party affiliation is not likely to have a major nationwide impact. The move could affect the results in the swing state of New Mexico. A Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey there found Johnson could draw 20 to 23 percent of the vote, insuring that President Obama would carry the state with 44 to 45 percent of the vote.

Beyond its implications in New Mexico, Johnson?s move increases the likelihood the 2012 presidential race will feature a stronger than usual third-party showing. Democratic strategist Stanley Greenberg recently predicted ?there is going to be a third party candidate? based on high levels of voter dissatisfaction. When Ross Perot made his third party run in 1992, ?those were happy times compared to now in terms of the mood of the country,? Greenberg said. ?

Greenberg?s view is that ?almost any third party helps Obama? by splintering the president?s opposition. He spoke at a recent Monitor-hosted breakfast for reporters.

Americans Elect is a major force helping boost the prospects for a stronger third-party movement. On its website, the group says its goal is ?to nominate a presidential ticket that answers directly to voters ? not the political system.? The non-partisan organization is now on the ballot in 13 states including California, Florida, Ohio, and Michigan, and signature collecting efforts are underway in 17 others. It has raised $22 million to date. Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus recently wrote that Americans Elect is the ?political wild card for the Internet? age.

Another wild card is who Governor Johnson will have to battle for the Libertarian nomination. One possibility is that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who ran for president under the Libertarian banner in 1988, might seek to run on the Libertarian ticket if he does not land the Republican nomination. Congressman Paul has not definitively ruled out seeking the Libertarian nomination.

In a statement, Libertarian Party executive director Carla Howell welcomed Johnson to the party, saying he had ?an outstanding record for vetoing legislation? and ?has also proposed a substantial reduction in federal spending.? ?He also supports legalizing marijuana and abortion rights.?The Libertarian nominating convention is scheduled for May 5.?

Prior to his formal announcement at a Santa Fe press conference, Johnson sounded bitter about the Republican primary process. He told the Alamogordo Daily News that ?anyone who looks at what has happened would say I have been treated unfairly. I think I?ve been hung out to dry by the Republican Party.?

It is not clear whether life in a third party will be better. As the National Journal?s Hotline noted, the last time a third-party candidate was included in a general election debate was 1996, when Ross Perot was running on the Reform Party ticket.

Microsoft testing fix for Windows Phone SMS bug

Good news Windows Phone fans, the Microsoft security folks have found what they think is the root cause of the SMS bug that has been plaguing some Windows Phone users, and are currently testing a fix. This is more than good news for those that have been affected.

The bug itself is a?received?text that would reboot the handset and break its ?Messaging? hub. It is, in other words, more than a small nuisance. Reports of the bug cropped up in the middle off December, and now only days after the bug itself become public, Microsoft has released the news that it is close, it feels, to solving it.

Bugs such as this are fantastic at generating not just bad press for a product line, but also for casting aspersions on its larger prospects; if something like this happened, how long until it is repeated? This is especially true for smaller, younger phone lines such as Windows Phone.

Assuming that Microsoft completes testing of the bug this week, we could see it in the wild in the first week of the new year. That?s far too late for comfort for those affected, but it will be a quick enough turn around to limit the effect of the (admittedly low distribution) bug. If you?ve been affected, sound off in the comments with your thoughts on the news. In the meantime, I?m going to keep an extra eye on my texts. The bug is, after all, hardware unspecific.

Paris Saint-Germain name Ancelotti as new coach

By Agence France-Presse, Updated: 12/30/2011

Italian Carlo Ancelotti was on Friday named the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain on a two-and-a-half year deal, but former England captain David Beckham has still not committed to the big-spending Qatar-backed French club.

Paris Saint-Germain name Ancelotti as new coach

Italian Carlo Ancelotti was on Friday named the new coach of Paris Saint-Germain on a two-and-a-half year deal, but former England captain David Beckham has still not committed to the big-spending Qatar-backed French club.

The 52-year-old former AC Milan and Chelsea boss takes over from Antoine Kombouare, who stepped down earlier Friday, and his first competitive game will be a French Cup last-64 tie away to Brittany amateur outfit Locmine on January 8.

Ancelotti is now in place to fly out to the Middle East with the first-team squad on Sunday for a four-day winter training camp in Qatar and Dubai.

It has been reported that Ancelotti, twice a Champions League winner in his time with Milan, would become the best-paid coach in the history of the French game with an annual salary of between six and seven million euros ($7.8m-$9m).

Ancelotti - who won the Champions League twice both as a player and as a coach with AC Milan - announced former France international midfielder Claude Makelele, who played at PSG till retiring at the end of last season, would be his assistant.

"I thought of Claude Makelele because he was a great player, who has great experience, huge charisma, and is a personality," said Ancelotti, who revealed that Giovanni Mauro who was the fitness coach with him at Milan and Chelsea would also be coming with him.

"He knows French football inside out, and has the ability to communicate with the players."

The club left it late to confirm the sacking of Kombouare, a former player who has been in the dug-out since the summer of 2009.

"After two years during which he carried out his duties as PSG head coach with passion, Antoine Kombouare leaves Paris Saint-Germain as from today," the Parisian club said in a statement shortly before unveiling Ancelotti.

Kombouare, 48, thanked "all the people who offered him support over these last days".

"I leave Paris Saint-Germain with a sense of unfinished business but with the feeling of having given everything."

Beckham's agent on Friday denied media reports that the former Manchester United star - whose main remaining ambition is to play for the British football team in next year's London Olympics - had signed for the Parisian club.

"There is no agreement with PSG at this time, an offer does not make a contract, we continue to hold negotiations with a number of clubs," 19Management said in a statement released by the SEMP public relations company.

"No decision has been made and we do not expect one at the moment."

PSG's sporting director Leonardo also said that there had been no agreement between the two parties and ultimately Beckham would decide what was best for him and his family.

"With Beckham, it is normal that there is huge press coverage, but nothing has been done between us and him," said the former Brazil international and AC Milan coach.

"We have a very good rapport with him, Carlo (Ancelotti) also has. I don't know what effect that may have.

"He has always said that his choice would be a family one. We have studied the matter, but there are details outside of the professional side of things that will decide matters.

"Today he is in Los Angeles, he is reflecting on his personal life.

"I don't know what he is going to do, there are details (which can intervene) for someone who is already living in Los Angeles."

Despite Leonardo's remarks earlier PSG's mega-rich owners Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) had expressed confidence that Beckham would "soon be a player for PSG".

"We are confident that he will be in attendance for the (friendly) match with AC Milan, and are happy to see David and his family settle into Paris."

UN in Haiti accuses police of abuse (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? Haitian National Police forces have used illegal excessive force against prisoners and it may have been such abuse that led to the deaths of at least nine people in the capital, the United Nations contends in two reports published Tuesday.

The reports by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the human rights section of the U.N peacekeeping mission in Haiti focus on investigations involving 20 members of the police force who may have committed abuses in six separate incidents.

Of particular concern: A 44-year-old man who was beaten to death inside a police station in the presence of senior officers.

The allegations come as the country still struggles to recover from a massive earthquake that struck two years ago next month.

"The success of post-earthquake reconstruction, and even the willingness of the international community to contribute financially will be affected by trends in security and law enforcement," one of the reports said. "The (national police force) is an essential institution for Haiti's security and stability."

Police chief Mario Andresol said he welcomed the watchdog role of the U.N. and other groups in helping the police force become more professional but added that his senior officers take action to stop abuses.

"In any cases we're informed about, we've taken disciplinary measures," Andresol told The Associated Press by telephone.

Some of the officers cited in the report have been arrested and are awaiting trial, Andresol added. He also noted that a few cases shouldn't be viewed as representative of the entire force.

Still, the U.N. reports contend that police leaders have not taken enough action against officers suspected of unlawful killings and torture. In some cases, accused officers were suspended and detained as investigations were launched, the reports say, but none has been convicted.

In several cases, the suspended police personnel resumed their functions even before the investigations into their conduct were concluded, according to the reports.

The summaries were compiled after the U.N. human rights section in Haiti received multiple complaints of killings, including summary executions, allegedly committed by officers from the Haitian National Police beginning in October 2010.

The human rights section investigated the deaths of eight people allegedly at the hands of 16 Haitian police officers in the metropolitan area of the capital, Port-au-Prince, between October 2010 and May 2011.

In one case, three men were stopped on a night in March by police as they hung posters for a leading candidate in the runoff for this year's presidential elections. Police forced two of them into a vehicle and the third left.

The campaign workers, Jeune Sterson and Louis Frantz, were then taken to a police station.

Witnesses told U.N. investigators that an officer said "zero" and made a sign of the cross, police slang meaning that the arrested men were to be killed.

Their bodies were found the next day.

Several days later, six officers were detained and a criminal justice investigation was opened.

"The (human rights section) believes there are reasonable grounds to suspect that (police) officers killed Jeune Sterson and Louis Frantz in what could amount to summary executions," the report said.

This and four other incidents represent only a portion of deaths that allegedly occurred at the hands of police in the past year, the report said.

The second U.N. report contends that two men, Serge Demosthene and Feckel Plaisimond, were illegally arrested and tortured in the Petionville police station to make them confess their guilt in the June 2011 slaying of Guiteau Toussaint, a prominent banker who was the director of the National Bank of Credit.

Plaisimond was released after several months of detention. But Demosthene was brought unconscious, 12 hours after his arrest, to the general hospital in Port-au-Prince and pronounced dead on arrival. He died as the result of being beaten in front of senior officers, the report said.

The national police force has only 8,000 officers in a country of 10 million. There have been efforts by the U.N., the Canadian government and others to reform the agency.

In an unrelated case, 13 police officers are currently on trial for their role in a 2010 prison riot in southern Haiti that left at least 10 inmates dead. A verdict is expected next month.

The case is being regarded as a test of Haiti's justice system, which is seen as corrupt and dysfunctional.

Univision edges out networks on repeat-heavy night (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - If Univision has its way, the future will look a lot like last night: Aided by repeat-heavy slates on the Big 4 networks, the Spanish-language network edged out CBS for the highest overall ratings of the night.

The finale of popular novela "La Fuerza del Destino" scored a 2.3 rating/6 share and 5.4 million total viewers from 8-10 p.m. An interview with the cast at 10 on "Don Francisco Presenta" scored a 1.5/4 and 3.6 million total viewers. The ratings averaged out to a 2.0 overall for the night, just ahead of CBS's 1.9 average for a night of all reruns.

Even in reruns, CBS still had the highest-rated show of the night: "Two and a Half Men" at 9 scored a 2.4/6. It was also the most-watched show with 8.1 million total viewers. But other shows lowered its overall average to just below Univision's.

Univision has long aimed to be the most-watched network in any language by the middle of the decade. Of course, it will typically face much stiffer competition than it will this slow holiday week.

The highest-rated new network show Monday was NBC's "Who's Still Standing" at 8, which earned a 1.7/5 and 6.9 million total viewers. NBC aired a "Fear Factor" repeat at 9, followed by a new episode of "30 Rock With Brian Williams" at 10, which earned a .9/2 and 3.5 million total viewers. NBC came in behind CBS, averaging a 1.4 over the night, despite offering the most new programming of the night, and NBC's numbers were likely inflated by local sports pre-emptions.

ABC's "You Deserve It" at 9 scored a 1.0/3 and 3.6 million total viewers. Otherwise the network ran repeats. It averaged a .9, and its numbers were also likely inflated by pre-empts.

Fox aired repeats throughout the night and averaged a .8 rating.

'Home for the holidays' means adjustments for military family

Elysse Fleece had her Christmas traditions down.

Get the live tree on Black Friday, then decorate the heck out of it.

Hang the Christmas lights.

Play Christmas music nonstop.

Watch holiday movies with son Donnivan.

In Christmas of ?09 and ?10, the routine went as smoothly as a freshly Zambonied ice rink. This year, however, Elysse Fleece discovered a rough spot: her husband, John.

For the first time since 2008, Sgt. 1st Class John Fleece is home for the holidays, and, while they?re happy to be together, they admit it?s been an adjustment. She loves the constant backdrop of Christmas music. He?d doesn?t. She?s gotten used to picking out the tree and hanging the lights, so it was just second nature for her to leave him out of he picture.

?I?d start to pick up my duties; she wanted to push me out of the way,? said John, 32, who returned to the Pikes Peak area in May after spending most of the last two years in Iraq.

It?s a scenario that is likely taking place in military homes throughout the county as U.S. involvement in Iraq comes to an end and the presence in Afghanistan dwindles. According to the Air Force Times, the military divorce rate reached a new high in 2011, with 3.7 percent of marriages breaking up.

It?s understandable, said the Fleeces, who will be married seven years in May. When one spouse is deployed, the other still has to go on with life. Routines are established, traditions created. And in spite of all the technological advances like Skype and Facebook that have made it easier for military couples to stay in touch, it?s not the same as living under the same roof and being in tune with each other?s rhythms.

?It was hard to let him in,? Elysse said Sunday as she and John sat at their Widefield-area home, watching Donnivan and his cousins from Oregon bounce around with the excitement generated by new toys, clothing and a houseful of relatives. ?For me it was, ?this is how we do it.? ?

She was so accustomed to handing the lights, even though she doesn?t like heights, that she almost forgot to include John.

?I hung the lights for the last two years,? she said. ?It was just natural for me to do it. This year, I said, ?oh wait; I have a guy who will climb on the roof to do it.?

Elysse, 26, said the military does a good job cautioning families about the more dramatic problems, like PTSD, but not on the mundane issues that can turn into minefields.

?They don?t tell you how you?re going to get annoyed because he put the coffee cup in the wrong place,? she said. ?It?s the little things you?re going to have issues with. They really don?t stress that you have to adjust to everything.?

The good news for John and Elysse is that they both are open about the stresses of living together again and they?re willing to talk about the challenges.

?There was a lot of tension, and the only way to get through anything is communication,? John said. ?I?m actually a confronter.?

And so, they?re becoming masters in the art of compromise. The Christmas music has been toned down. She?s trying to fit his work schedule into hers.

?There?s a lot of give and take,? Elysse said.

The adjustments have been well worth the effort, the couple said. For the first time since 2008, John was together with his extended family as well as his wife and son. He didn?t have to put up with a choppy Internet connection to see his son decorate the tree or open presents.

?Now I?m seeing it in real life, and I like it,? John said. ?Being able to take part in it ? that?s the best gift.?

[uruknet.info] PLO Official: Without Peace Agreement, We May Cancel Recognition of Israel

December 26, 2011

On Monday, PLO official Mohammed Eshtayeh said the Palestinian Authority (PA) might cancel its 1993 recognition of the state of Israel if a peace agreement could not be reached.

Eshtayeh made the comment in an interview the London-based Sharq al-Awsat newspaper, calling the recognition of Israel "an unbalanced one."

Eshtaiyeh also said that the PLO recognized Israel in 1993 "geographically."

"However," he continued, "Israel did not recognize Palestine geographically, but only as an institution. It only recognized the PLO. We now ask for a mutual recognition: we want Israel to recognize Palestine on the 1967 borders."

Eshtayehh also said that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was determined to say there is no difference between the illegal settlement of Har Homa and Tel Aviv, then Palestinians would not differentiate between Ramallah and Jaffa.

According to Eshtayeh, Palestinian efforts from now on would concentrate on internal issues, saying, "Mahmoud Abbas is interested in uniting Palestinians."

Eshtayeh, part of the Palestinian negotiating team, also talked about the possibility to canceling the Oslo agreements, just days after Hamas and the Islamic Jihad agreed to join the PLO and prepare for May elections for the main two bodies of the organization, the Palestinian National Council and the Executive Committee.

PLO executive committee member Hanan Ashrawi said no formal position about recognition of Israel had been decided.

Ashrawi told the "Voice of Palestine" radio that withdrawal of recognition was a last option if Israel made no progress towards peace. She said that first legal responses must be formulated to Israels expansion of settlements and Judaization of Jerusalem. Ashrawi also said that Palestinians must work on civil resistance projects in Jerusalem.

Packers lead Bears 7-0 after 1st quarter

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? With the first five-touchdown game of his NFL career, Aaron Rodgers ensured that the Green Bay Packers' playoff road will go through Lambeau Field.

He also made sure the rival Chicago Bears will be spending the playoffs at home.

Rodgers broke a close game wide open by leading three quick scoring drives in the second half, and the Packers beat the Bears 35-21 on Sunday night.

Rodgers noted that he once threw six touchdowns in junior college ? also in a rivalry game ? but acknowledged this one was a little bit bigger.

"Yeah, this one's pretty special," Rodgers said.

With the win, the Packers (14-1) nailed down the No. 1 seed in the NFC and claimed another round of bragging rights in the NFL's most storied rivalry by knocking the Bears out of the playoff chase.

"We wanted the path to go through Lambeau," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

Rodgers threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jordy Nelson, another two to James Jones, and found tight end Jermichael Finley for a score. Rodgers was 21 of 29 for 283 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions when backup Matt Flynn took over for Rodgers with 7:54 left in the game.

Rodgers surpassed Lynn Dickey's single-season franchise record of 4,458 yards passing with one game left, although it's unclear how much Rodgers will play in the Packers' finale against Detroit.

The loss eliminated the Bears (7-8) from playoff contention and put the Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs.

Third-string running back Kahlil Bell rushed for 121 yards for the Bears, who trailed by only four early in the third quarter. But Rodgers drove the Packers for touchdowns on their next three possessions to put the game out of reach.

"When you play the Super Bowl champions, you have to be on top of your game," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "Offensively, we did enough things to keep us in the game and have a chance to win the game at the end. But defensively we just didn't have it."

McCarthy said the team's run defense will be examined after the big performance by Bell, but added that the final score told the story.

"We won big," McCarthy said. "That's the bottom line."

Chicago came into Sunday on a four-game losing streak and beset by injuries. But the Bears were able to stay in the game with solid defense and tough running by Bell, who started because of injuries to Matt Forte and Marion Barber.

Rodgers' second-half fireworks proved to be too much for Chicago.

"Thirty-five points on that defense, that's a good night," McCarthy said.

The victory was the Packers' fourth over the Bears in 2011. Green Bay also beat Chicago in the 2010 regular-season finale, the NFC Championship game, and at Soldier Field on Sept. 25.

With the Bears trailing 14-3 at halftime, quarterback Josh McCown found Earl Bennett wide open for a 49-yard gain to set up first-and-goal on the 1. Bell fumbled just short of the goal line on the next play but offensive lineman Edwin Williams recovered the ball for a touchdown.

With the Packers nursing a four-point lead, and the Lambeau Field crowd nervously quiet early in the third quarter, Rodgers answered by dropping deep and throwing a rainbow pass to Nelson, who blew through the Chicago secondary and hauled in the ball for a 55-yard touchdown.

Rodgers then showed his running ability on the Packers' next possession, juking his way between Bears linebackers Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs on a scramble. Rodgers finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown toss to Jones, giving the Packers a commanding 28-10 lead.

Packers safety Charlie Peprah came up with an interception, and Rodgers found Nelson for another score to give Green Bay a 35-10 lead.

"It just hasn't gone the way we wanted to," Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "If we play like this, that's what's going to happen. The last five weeks, we haven't played well enough to win, and we've lost all five games. We're not real happy where we're at. Our coaches aren't happy, but that's what we get."

McCown finally answered with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Davis ? then drew the ire of the Lambeau crowd by scrambling for a two-point conversion and spiking the ball over the goalpost with his team trailing 35-18.

Rodgers' offensive feats came behind a patchwork offensive line, as the Packers were without three of their top four tackles.

Chad Clifton returned to practice this week after sitting out since October because of hamstring and back injuries, but isn't ready to play. Bryan Bulaga was inactive Sunday because of a left knee sprain, and backup Derek Sherrod is out for the season with a broken right leg.

Green Bay also was missing wide receiver Greg Jennings, because of a sprained left knee, and defensive lineman Ryan Pickett because of a concussion.

The Bears have lost five straight games since losing quarterback Jay Cutler to a broken right thumb in a Nov. 20 victory over San Diego. Chicago was 7-3 after that win, but came into Sunday's game barely alive in the playoff chase.

The Bears started McCown on Sunday after backup Caleb Hanie struggled to fill in for Cutler. McCown's most recent start came with the Oakland Raiders in 2007, and he was out of the NFL last season.

"It's a tough assignment, but you've got to find a way to pull it off," McCown said.

To make matters worse for the Bears' offense, Barber was inactive because of a calf injury. Chicago already was without Forte, who missed his third straight game because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Notes: Sunday's attendance was 70,574, the team's 300th consecutive sellout, including the playoffs. ... Bears offensive lineman Lance Louis left the game in the first half because of an illness. ... Packers RB James Starks bruised an ankle.

SC Army veteran, 96, always eager to give blood (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? At age 96, Joe Johnson is still first in line when the bloodmobile arrives at his South Carolina retirement home. He's always eager to save lives and keep up the habit he started during his Army career.

"I'm sure I've given gallons," says the retired master sergeant. "I don't see any reason to stop."

Johnson, who has lived at the Morningside retirement center in Greenwood, S.C., for about 10 years, is a regular donor, said Katherine Amerson, executive director at the home.

"He's just great. He's always out there, trying to get everyone to donate. `It's your duty,' he tells everybody," Amerson said in a telephone interview.

Johnson said in the same phone call that he began donating after he joined the Army in Tennessee at age 21 and kept it up after moving to Florida, and then later South Carolina. The former infantry soldier said he served in Europe ? though not in combat ? and back in the United States, training National Guard forces.

"They'd say to us, `Line up and give blood' and maybe out of 200 or so in the company, maybe 40 or 50 guys would do it. Some people would just walk away, but I never did," Johnson said. "I constantly gave blood. I had a routine going."

Johnson celebrated his 96th birthday on Tuesday with a cake, which Amerson said he insisted on sharing with some of the other 43 residents at the assisted living home. His most recent blood donation was a week earlier when a mobile unit made one of its periodic visits to the retirement home.

Jason Agee, who works for the not-for-profit The Blood Connection, said he was wondering what Johnson wanted when he first came out to his mobile unit parked outside the retirement home.

"He came straight out to the bus and said, `I'm here to donate, young man!" Agee said.

"He's always telling stories. He's awesome," Agee said. "For him, it's all about giving to help other people. Every pint of blood can save up to three lives, you know."

Agee said his organization collects about 2,000 units, or pints, of blood every week in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina.

Jan Kissimon, the organization's chief marketing officer based in Greenville, said Johnson is one of several older donors in the area and that the organization has taken blood in the past year or so from several people "who've been in the 100-year range."

"We have a small pool of people in that category," said Kissimon. "They are a generation who are used to giving. It's a whole different mentality."

Although one typically must be at least 16 years old to donate blood, there is no upper age limit, said Stephanie Millian, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross in the Washington, D.C., area.

"It seems to be true for those who grew up, or experienced World War II. They become life-long blood donors," Millian said.

The Red Cross is the nation's largest single blood collection agency, and gathers about 6 million units of blood from about 4 million volunteers annually, Millian said.

The average age for donors with the Red Cross is 40, and the organization has taken blood from donors ranging in age from 16 to 102, Millian said.

There are restrictions depending upon medications, travel or residence in certain regions of the world in order to avoid the chance for infectious diseases. Information about donating can be accessed on the Red Cross web site, she said.

The American Association of Blood Banks estimates there are about 10.8 million volunteers who donate blood every year.

The association's website says an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, but less than 10 percent do so annually. About 44,000 blood units are used in hospitals or emergency rooms every day, the website says.

So far, Johnson said he intends to keep on giving for as many years as he can.

"I think I'm good for a few years more," he said with a chuckle.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Scuffles broke out and police were brought in to quell unrest that nearly turned into riots across the United States following the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes ? a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

The mayhem stretched from Washington state to Georgia Friday and was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The $180 (?137.86) shoes went on sale Friday in a limited release at stores, and the lines began forming several hours before businesses opened.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, New Jersey, mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Georgia, officers said they had to break a car window to get two toddlers out after a woman went in after the shoes. They said she was taken into custody when she returned to the car.

In California, police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

A new edition has been launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday, known as Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

Analysis: Isolated on tax cut, House GOP blinks

WASHINGTON (AP) -- With tea party-backed first-termers calling the shots, House Republicans snatched political defeat from the jaws of victory in a year-end showdown over Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits.

This time, they pushed the country to the brink - and wound up blinking.

"In the end House Republicans felt like they were re-enacting the Alamo, with no reinforcements and our friends shooting at us," said veteran Republican Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas.

Precisely.

By spurning a deal that Senate Republicans had embraced, for a two-month extension of tax cuts for 160 million Americans and jobless benefits for millions more, the House wing of the party isolated itself politically and by some calculations improved President Barack Obama's re-election prospects.

Friday brought a humbling surrender, the only realistic alternative despite grumbling from scattered holdouts and Newt Gingrich, courting tea party support in the race for the presidential nomination.

By then, even allies said Republicans had become vulnerable to Obama's accusation that they, alone, were threatening a fragile economic recovery and the well-being of the employed and unemployed alike. "Right now, the bipartisan compromise that was reached on Saturday is the only viable way to prevent a tax hike on Jan. 1," Obama said Tuesday after the House rejected the two-month measure that had sailed through the Senate on a vote of 89-10.

The reliably conservative editorial page of The Wall Street Journal piled on, referring to a circular Republican firing squad. The GOP has "achieved the small miracle of letting Mr. Obama position himself as an election-year tax cutter. ... This should be impossible," it wrote on Wednesday.

One poll said Obama ran ahead of Republicans when it came to handling taxes, an issue that has generally favored the GOP since Ronald Reagan sat in the White House three decades ago.

No less critical were Senate Republicans, fearing the impact on their own political prospects, both individually and as a group eager to gain a majority in the 2012 elections. A gain of four seats would give them control, and several close races are likely. Losses suddenly seemed possible instead. There was in even talk that the hardline stance by House Republicans was putting the GOP's big majority in that chamber in danger.

Most importantly, for the first time all year, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell wasn't in a position to help as House Speaker John Boehner sought to carry out the wishes of his rank and file, the Kentucky senator having voted for the bill that House Republicans insisted was a loser.

At its core, the dispute was a simple one.

Talks between the two parties in the Senate on a full-year extension faltered when negotiators could not agree on the cuts needed to make sure the measure did not increase deficits. The two-month stopgap bill was designed to keep the tax cuts and jobless benefits going until the negotiations could resume again after the first of the year.

To the tea party types, that smacked of government as usual, precisely what they came to Washington to change.

"We're as unified as we've been all year," said Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, on the night before the House Republicans rejected the Senate bill, demanded negotiations on a compromise and drove themselves into a political dead end.

This time, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Democrats had no incentive to negotiate, unlike earlier when brinkmanship pushed the government to the edge of a partial shutdown or an unprecedented default.

They and the White House had already caved to Republican demands that any extension be paid for, and that Obama decide within 60 days whether to allow construction of an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas.

The president had threatened to veto any measure that linked tax cuts and the pipeline, hoping to postpone a decision on the project until after the election. Late last week, he did an about-face and demanded Congress send him a bill that did precisely that.

The reversal gave Republicans the political victory some had sought if they were going to approve an extension of the tax cuts and jobless benefits at the core of Obama's jobless program.

Boehner told House Republicans as much in a conference call on Saturday, according to several officials who listened. They added he recommended no specific course of action and sought the all views.

Some lawmakers suspected Boehner had acquiesced in the two-month extension that McConnell worked out, and he was challenged on it 48 hours later in a closed-door meeting. He bristled at the accusation, according to several participants, and denied it flatly.

There were hints of infighting. Behind closed doors, one Republican lawmaker raised a concern about a memo - inaccurate, he said - from an unidentified staff aide who wrote that Boehner favored a more conciliatory approach than Majority Leader Eric Cantor and other members of the leadership.

"We're here and ready to work," Boehner told reporters on Wednesday morning. He spoke at a made-for-television event with Cantor and the eight Republicans, including three first-termers, appointed to conduct non-existent negotiations with Democrats.

Little more than 24 hours later, the charade ended when Boehner informed his own rank and file, no consultations permitted.

By then, even two newcomers to the House had issued public statements calling for an end to the standoff.

"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," said freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., now a voting member of the government he was criticizing.

The struggle over, Reid said he hoped the episode had been "a very good learning experience, especially to those who are newer" to Congress.

"Everything we do around here does not have to wind up in a fight."

16 killed in violence in Mexican state (AP)

VERACRUZ, Mexico ? A group of five gunmen sprayed three passenger buses with bullets in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz on Thursday, killing seven passengers, before being chased down and killed by soldiers.

Veracruz state government spokeswoman Gina Dominguez said the gunmen apparently resisted detention and died in the ensuing confrontation. They all had rifles and were traveling in a bulletproof vehicle.

While the attackers' identities and cartel affiliation have not yet been established, the men killed match witness descriptions of the assailants in the bus attacks, Dominguez said.

Earlier, gunmen killed four people in the town of El Higo in northern Veracruz, where drug gangs have been particularly active, but Dominguez said those killings appear not to have been related to the bus attacks.

The bloody pre-Christmas bus shootings brought up memories of the brutal murder of dozens of bus passengers whose bodies were found in mass graves in the neighboring state of Tamaulipas in April. A total of 193 bodies had been found in 26 graves, and officials say most of those were Mexican migrants heading to the United States who were kidnapped off buses and killed by the Zetas drug cartel.

But there appeared to be differences between Thursday's killings and the murders in Tamaulipas.

In the Tamaulipas killings, the Zetas gunmen stopped and boarded buses and removed male passengers and killed them, either because they believed a rival gang was trying to send reinforcements into the region aboard buses or because they wanted to force some of the passengers to join their gang.

Thursday's attacks on buses may have been more random; the gunmen apparently just sprayed passing buses with gunfire. The buses hit were covering local routes in northern Veracruz, though authorities did not release the names of the bus lines operating the route.

There was no immediate information on the identity of the dead bus passengers, or the four people killed in El Higo.

The area has been the scene of bloody battles between the Zetas and their former allies, the Gulf cartel.

The two gangs split in 2010.

The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros, a Mexican border city north of where the attacks occurred, said in a statement that "several vehicles," including the buses, were attacked, but did not specify what the other vehicles were.

The consulate urged Americans to "exercise caution" when traveling in Veracruz, and "avoid intercity road travel at night."

Googlers Get Galaxy Nexus Gift

Google has always been a great place to work, but occasionally stories leak out that make you want to immediately apply for a job. This is one of those stories ??happy Google employees are reporting that each of them are receiving a very special gift for Christmas ??their very own Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The Ice Cream Sandwich reference phone retails for roughly ?500 sim free, so that?s quite a Christmas bonus!

The Galaxy Nexus are a bit different than they normally look as well ??they?ve got a unique back cover that shows off Google?s iconography and gives a rather unique look to the phone, as you can see.

It?s not known if the phones are different in any other way. The changes could only be cosmetic, but knowing Google, I wouldn?t be surprised to learn if they ship with some custom firmware or perhaps an integrated Tazer or something.

Merry Christmas Googlers, and enjoy your new phones.

This article was written by William Judd. William writes for Mobile Fun (and not Google, sadly), although he is in possession of a Galaxy Nexus. Mobile Fun is known for being the largest online retailer of Amazon Kindle Covers, including the Leather Kindle Cover and a New Kindle Cover range.

Bogle: Time for speculators to pay fair tax share (AP)

John C. Bogle counted himself among the 1 percent of wealthiest Americans a couple decades ago. You might not guess that today, when you hear the 82-year-old founder of mutual fund company Vanguard rail against economic inequality.

He can sound almost like an Occupy Wall Street protester: "Our markets have gone crazy, and there is 200 times as much speculation as there is investing," he says.

It has been 15 years since the low-cost investing pioneer stepped down as CEO of Vanguard. It was Bogle who launched the first index mutual fund in 1976. Vanguard Group has since grown into the largest fund company, managing nearly $1.7 trillion in U.S. fund assets.

Bogle remains wealthy, but his income is a fraction of what he earned when he ran Vanguard. He's paid a modest retainer to run Vanguard's Bogle Financial Markets Research Center, a think tank in Valley Forge, Pa.

He resists a label that applies to most people his age: "I'm so far from retired, it's almost an embarrassment. I'm here in the office every day." He's also writing his 10th book, "The Clash of Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation." And he continues to deliver speeches.

Bogle says he's paying close attention to tax policies he considers unfair, including one that's favorable to the fund industry and investors with taxable accounts. The top rate for dividends and long-term capital gains is historically low at 15 percent, as a result of the extension of Bush era tax cuts that Congress and President Barack Obama agreed to a year ago. In contrast, top earners pay 35 percent on regular income. He doesn't like that disparity.

Here are excerpts from a recent interview with Bogle:

Q: What do you think about the ongoing discussion over tax fairness?

A: I believe the rich should pay more, but that's not a good platform for tax policy. What has gone wrong is that we've failed to recognize the difference between earned income and unearned income. Is it really fair for gamblers on Wall Street to pay a 15 percent rate when they make a winning investment, and an honest working person ? a bricklayer for example ? may pay an equal or higher tax on their wages than a gambler? That's absolute absurdity.

Rates may have to be changed, but we also need to look at what is taxed, and how. Dividend income should be taxed at the same rate as ordinary income. As for capital gains, there ought to be some distinction between capital made by people who start businesses, and contribute value to society, and capital made by gamblers on Wall Street, some of whom win. Earned capital income should carry the regular dividend rate, but capital income gains by trading, and particularly short-term trading, should pay a higher tax, even than the present ordinary income rate.

Q: What's your take on the Occupy movement?

A: I'm happy to say that my current income puts me in the 99 percent group. So maybe I'm not so happy, I don't know.

This movement has brought to the surface some very serious problems in our country about disparities in opportunity and income. So many young people are having a terrible time getting a job.

Young people have great idealism, and the Occupy movement has been a bit unrealistic at times. So what? I can't imagine a worse America if our younger generation didn't have great idealism. I salute them for their enthusiasm, and their mission.

The negative side is that they just pushed too hard for too long. It's very difficult for any movement without any seeming leadership ? other than a good idea ? to have any sense of taste or judgment. Who's to say, `This is going too far'? In some places, it's just gone on too long, and it's been too disruptive. So I think it's good that we've been cleaning up the plazas where the Occupy movement set up.

Q: What's the focus of the book you're writing?

A: That our financial system has gone off the rails. It's something we think of as providing capital for new businesses, that will enable people to finance new companies or add to the capital of existing companies. We do that to the tune of about $200 billion a year in financing through Wall Street, or through the financial system. And yet we do some $40 trillion worth of trading every year. I'm selling my investment to you, and you're buying it from me, and it creates no value for society. Indeed, it subtracts value, because the guy in the middle gets his piece.

Many mutual funds turn over 100 percent of their portfolios each year. When I got into this business, it was maybe 18 percent a year. It's amazing. This industry is a big part of the problem. What we need is a transfer tax on trading. We need to tame the trading and speculative element in our financial system.

Q: What's your investment outlook heading into 2012?

A: If you're investing in stocks with idea of a one-year outcome, you should not invest. You can lose a lot. If you invest in stocks with a five-year outlook, I would think it is highly debatable if you should do that. You have to think about more than just the probabilities of a market crash. You have to consider the consequences for your savings, and whether you'd be decimated.

As for bonds, with interest rates and yields so low now, you just have to take those for what they are ? a lot lower than what they have been historically.

With the economy, I'm cautious. I don't expect a boom in consumer spending over the next two or three years. People don't have the wherewithal to spend a lot more, and in today's world, they don't have the confidence. Confidence can change overnight, but wherewithal cannot.
