Wander into the Ingbar Gallery in New York between now and November 3rd and you'll probably double take at the name of the artist. The current exhibition is by one David Hinchliffe.

Is it the same David Hinchliffe who was Brisbane City Council's Labor majority leader in that awkward power-sharing council after Campbell Newman was first elected Mayor? Yes it is.

Fresh back from the opening in the Big Apple, David - don't ask me about parking meters - Hinchliffe is with me in the studio:

Buffeted by debt crisis, EU wins Nobel Peace Prize

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Commission president had no reason to expect anything but another bad day. Then, out of the blue, after three years of back-biting and seemingly daily financial crisis, the European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for fostering peace on a continent long ravaged by war.

It was a badly needed morale boost for a 60-year-old union in the midst of a midlife crisis.

Even as it announced the award Friday, the Norwegian prize jury warned that the financial crisis challenging the 27-nation bloc's unity could lead to a return to "extremism and nationalism." It urged Europeans to remember the EU's role in building peace and reconciliation among enemies who fought Europe's bloodiest wars, even as they tackle the economic crisis that threatens its future.

The award was hailed at EU headquarters in Brussels and by pro-EU leaders across Europe, but derided by "euroskeptics" who consider the EU an elitist super-state that erodes national identities.

Emerging for a brief encounter with reporters, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso was beaming as he declared: "Ladies and gentlemen, I have to say that when I woke up this morning, I did not expect it to be such a good day."

"The Nobel Peace Prize committee and the international community are now sending a very important message to Europe that the European Union is something very precious, that we should cherish it for the good of Europeans and for the good of the entire world," he said.

The announcement was met with negative reactions in debt-ridden countries like Spain and Greece, where many blame Germany and other northern EU neighbors for the painful austerity measures like higher taxes and job cuts they have endured in a so-far failed effort to salvage their floundering economies.

As the EU grinds toward the three-year mark in its withering financial crisis, problems abound, progress is slow and 25 million people are out of work. The prize will do nothing to balance out-of-kilter national budgets or spur economic growth in Greece or bring down the borrowing costs of some of the weaker countries that use the euro, such as Spain.

Nor will it provide solace to the unemployed.

"For them, people may even think that this is cynical," said Paul De Grauwe, an economist with the London School of Economics. "If I were living in Portugal or Spain or Greece, I would be upset about it: 'They are giving this prize to these people in Brussels, and they are the source of my misery.'"

Still, there seems little doubt that the European Union has played a major role in bringing peace to a continent that had known precious little of it.

Growing out of the devastation of World War II, the premise of the project was that closer economic interdependence would ensure that centuries-old enemies never again turn on each other. The EU is now made up of 500 million people in 27 nations, with others lined up to join.

"If we ask Europeans anywhere, in any country, of any age, including the youngest ones, they can't imagine that there could be war in Europe today. It's over," said former French President Valerie Giscard d'Estaing, who was born in Germany, fought in World War II and drafted the first version of the EU constitution.

Jacques Delors, often dubbed Mr. Europe for his efforts as European Commission president to push toward greater unity in the 1980s and '90s, said the prize was "a great satisfaction for the founding fathers of Europe, and all the activists for the European cause over the years who tried to make progress on what was for them, at the outset, a dream."

"The European construction is a work of peace. It was meant to reconcile people," Delors said.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor congratulated the EU in a statement released Friday evening. "We have no stronger partner than Europe and are pleased to see it recognized for its achievements," he said.

But if economic ties once brought peace, they are now putting European unity at risk. The economic crisis has stirred tensions between north and south, caused unemployment to soar and sent hundreds of thousands of people into the streets to protest tax hikes and job cuts.

The bloc's financial disarray is threatening the euro ? the common currency used by 17 of its members ? and fueling the rise of extremist movements such as Golden Dawn in Greece. The party, branded as neo-Nazi by opponents, has soared in popularity as Greece sinks deeper into a debt-fueled morass.

Marine Le Pen, head of the far-right National Front in France, told AP Television News that the EU is "massively rejected by Europeans" and doesn't deserve the prize.

"This is practically a provocation considering the suffering of millions of Europeans who today see themselves led by the European Union to a veritable economic and social war," she said. "Three years ago, it was Barack Obama who won it while he was engaged in military wars. So this Nobel Peace Prize has actually become a Nobel prize of war."

Nobel committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said the committee had no position on how to solve the continent's economic crisis.

"But we send a very strong message that we should keep in mind why we got this Europe after World War II," he said. "We should do everything we can to safeguard it, not let it disintegrate and let the extremism and nationalism grow again."

The road ahead remains difficult.

European leaders enjoyed a period of relative calm over the summer, when it seemed they had built the more centralized institutions that many economists believe are necessary to the stability of the common currency.

But now there are what the economist De Grauwe called "rear guard battles" in which some EU states, notably Germany, appear to be trying to undo or dilute some of those accomplishments, including a proposed banking union and the ability of the European Central Bank to reduce countries' borrowing costs by buying sovereign bonds.

And perhaps the biggest challenge of all is restoring growth to a region where the economies of many are shrinking. That is unlikely to happen, De Grauwe said, unless EU leaders relax their unrelenting drive for austerity, through which they are creating what he called "a recession that could have been avoided."

Those hit by this recession were not impressed by the prize.

"The peace prize?" asked Giorgos Dertilis, who works at an insurance company in Athens. "The way things are going, what will happen in the immediate future? Peace is the one thing we might not have."

George Tzogopoulos, a political analyst from the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy, said the prize might help people understand the role the EU has played in preserving peace. But it could also be viewed as "a hypocritical gesture, because the European Union has so far completely failed to deal with the social dimension of the crisis and problems like poverty and unemployment."

Still, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Nobel committee had made a "wonderful decision," and linked it to efforts to salvage the euro, even though the judges didn't mention the common currency.

"I often say the euro is more than a currency. We shouldn't forget this in these weeks and months in which we work for the strengthening of the euro," Merkel told reporters at the Chancellery in Berlin. The euro "has always primarily been about the original idea of Europe as a community of peace and values."

Strong reactions to the choice for the $1.2 million award crackled Friday over social media.

"The EU is a unique project that replaced war with peace, hate with solidarity. Overwhelming emotion for awarding of (hash)Nobel prize to EU," Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, wrote on Twitter.

"Nobel prize for the EU. At a time Brussels and all of Europe is collapsing in misery. What next? An Oscar for Van Rompuy?" said Dutch euro-skeptic lawmaker Geert Wilders, referring to Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council.

Normally, the prize committee either honors lifetime achievement or promotes a work in progress.

This year's award does both, Jagland said, noting it "looks backward as well as forward" by recognizing the EU's historic role in building peace, even as nationalist forces that once tore the continent apart are again on the rise.

The citation noted the democratic reforms the EU demands of nations who join. It referred to Greece, Spain and Portugal, which joined in the 1980s after emerging from dictatorships, and to the talks with Balkan nations seeking membership following bloody wars in the 1990s.

Europe's stumbling economy is making it harder for economies around the world to recover and international policymakers are urging more decisive action from the region's governments to deal with the crippling debt crisis.

The region is the United States' largest export customer and any fall-off in demand will hurt U.S. businesses ? as well as Obama's election prospects.

MyPraize - The Power of Love

jonathananu

Love is the inexplicable power from heaven that reigns on earth. It has the authority to change lives, heal internal wounds, and free those who are in enslaved by their burdens. It can revitalize communities and revolutionize nations. The origin of this mystical power is rooted in the essence of our Lord God and we are privileged to the keepers of such divinity.

I was first introduced to this power by my grandmother Mrs. Clara Bell Smiley. She was an older fair-skinned woman with a thick southern accent and had a smile that could melt the hardest of hearts. We were her children and she was our ?Big Momma?. ?To be given the title of ?Big Momma? is an honor in the African American community. It means that you are the matriarch of your family. ?She was not only our matriarch; she was the community?s Big Momma as well.

The love and affection this woman poured from the depths of her soul into her family and community was sobering to the spirit. Even though I was only ten years old at the time, I had never seen such a generous and humble person. I remember how she used cook food and store it in her freezer. She did this to feed her family or her extended-community family members when they were going through hard times. She feed them food that would satisfy their piercing hunger and gave them drink that quenched the drought in their throats. But that was just the appetizer. The main course was a full serving of the word of God, seasoned heavily with the Holy Spirit, and drenched in the love of Christ. In my opinion, she gave a new meaning to soul food.

Big Momma had a deep desire to be loyal to the word of God and took seriously the great commandment of loving your neighbor. I was blessed with the opportunity of witnessing this great love demonstrated when she counseled the broken, cared for the sick and prayed for the lost in the community. She made Jesus real to me. He was more real than any those who called you a heathen and threw scriptures at you then called it evangelizing. He was more real than a wailing preacher who screamed, shouted and entertained the people while their souls begged for spiritual substance. He was more real than church leaders who let the culture of politics and prejudices consume the atmosphere of their congregations. I saw Jesus in the heart of a 70 year old heroine.

My grandmother is the reason why my dedication to the community is serious. She taught me how to genuinely love people and not just tolerate them. To be a shepherd and take good care of the sheep of God. These days people listen to politicians and place their empty rhetoric over God?s word and treat his sheep like foreign refugees. We must get back to the basics and love each other as Christ loved us; so that the Kingdom of God could be expanded in our lives, families and communities. ?Big Momma died when I was 12 years old but she planted seeds that will live forever. ? ?

The Newest Breast Self-Exam Recommendation (You'll Want to ...

How often do you perform breast self-exams? Once a month, right, because that's what experts have recommended? Well, there's a new recommendation in town--straight from Planned Parenthood, which is aiming to educate women under the age of 40 about breast cancer.

According to Planned Parenthood, research shows that there's no benefit to performing once-a-month self-exams. Instead, the organization suggests you practice continual breast self-awareness, which doesn't include a specific technique or frequency. It's more like keeping an eye on how your breasts look and feel; checking them out in the mirror and feeling them from time to time. Planned Parenthood says that this will help you notice any changes--so you can have them checked out by a health care provider more quickly than you might have otherwise.

What kinds of changes should you be aware of--and what should you do? Planned Parenthood recently released the new video, above, that is well worth the minute and a half to watch it. But here's a quick rundown:

* If you notice lumps, redness, swelling, puckering, breast pain or discharge from your nipple, see your doctor. It's entirely possible these symptoms could be something else--cysts, infections, injuries, or just your breasts changing (because breasts do change throughout your life!). Still, it's good to get the all-clear from a doc or nurse/nurse practitioner.

* If your doctor does clinical breast exam, that's a good thing: Planned Parenthood reports that's the best method for screening young women.

* Planned Parenthood and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend a clinical breast exam as part of a well-woman exam every 1 to 3 years for women ages 20 to 39, and every year for women 40 and over. If you have a family history of breast cancer or other medical conditions, you might need more frequent exams.

Would you say you're pretty attuned to how your breasts look and feel? Do you perform regular self-exams, or do you already do a time-to-time-but-unscheduled check-in with your breasts?

US Urges Progress on Macedonia Name Deal :: Balkan Insight

"The United States would like to see the issue resolved so that Macedonia joins NATO as soon as possible. Again, we encourage both sides to solve the issue," Hammer said.

Greece and Macedonia remain at odds in a long-standing dispute over Macedonia's name.

Citing the unresolved issue, Greece has repeatedly blocked Macedonia?s progress towards both EU and NATO membership.

"We support UN efforts to find a solution to the Macedonia-Greece issue,? Hammer said, adding that UN mediator Matthew Nimetz "is working on the issue's settlement?, which would ?hopefully come very soon?.

Greece insists that use of the term "Macedonia" implies a territorial claim to its own northern province of the same name. Macedonia on the other hand sees the pressure to change its name as a threat to its national identity.

The US remarks come after the European Commission this week in its annual progress report on Macedonia for the fourth year in a row recommended a start of to EU accession talks.

But the European Union has so far not offered an actual start date for the talks owing to the Greek blockade related to the dispute over Macedonia?s name.

Speaking about the Balkans in general, Hammer said that the US supported the whole region's Euro-Atlantic Integration process.

Chinese writer Mo Yan wins Nobel literature prize

BEIJING (AP) ? Novelist Mo Yan, this year's Nobel Prize winner for literature, is practiced in the art of challenging the status quo without offending those who uphold it.

Mo, whose popular, sprawling, bawdy tales bring to life rural China, is the first Chinese winner of the literature prize who is not a critic of the authoritarian government. And Thursday's announcement by the Swedish Academy brought an explosion of pride across Chinese social media.

The state-run national broadcaster, China Central Television, reported the news moments later, and the official writers' association, of which Mo is a vice chairman, lauded the choice. But it also ignited renewed criticisms of Mo from other writers as too willing to serve or too timid to confront a government that heavily censors artists and authors, and punishes those who refuse to obey.

The reactions highlight the unusual position Mo holds in Chinese literature. He is a genuinely popular writer who is embraced by the Communist establishment but who also dares, within careful limits, to tackle controversial issues like forced abortion. His novel "The Garlic Ballads," which depicts a peasant uprising and official corruption, was banned.

"He's one of those people who's a bit of a sharp point for the Chinese officials, yet manages to keep his head above water," said his longtime U.S. translator, Howard Goldblatt of the University of Notre Dame. "That's a fine line to walk, as you can imagine."

Typical of his ability to skirt the censors' limitations, Mo had retreated from Beijing in recent days to the rural eastern village of Gaomi where he was raised and which is the backdrop for much of his work. He greeted the prize with characteristic low-key indifference.

"Whether getting it or not, I don't care," the 57-year-old Mo said in a telephone interview with CCTV from Gaomi. He said he goes to his childhood hometown every year around this time to read, write and visit his elderly father.

"I'll continue on the path I've been taking, feet on the ground, describing people's lives, describing people's emotions, writing from the standpoint of the ordinary people," said Mo, whose real name is Guan Moye and whose pen name "Mo Yan" means "don't speak." He chose the name while writing his first novel to remind himself to hold his tongue and stay out of trouble.

The state media hoopla and government cheer contrasted with the last Nobel prizes given to Chinese. Beijing disowned China-born French emigre dramatist, novelist and government critic Gao Xingjian when in 2000 he became the only other Chinese writer to win the literary prize.

After imprisoned democracy campaigner Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Peace Prize two years ago, the government heaped scorn on the award as a tool of the West and put diplomatic and economic relations with Norway, which awards the prize, into a chill.

Nobel winners have included political and social critics, including Guenter Grass of Germany and Orhan Pamuk of Turkey. The Swedish Academy disputed suggestions that it had selected Mo to seek Beijing's favor and rehabilitate the Nobel's image in the minds of many Chinese.

"As we've been trying to, naggingly, say: This is a literature prize that is awarded on literary merit alone. We don't take other things in consideration," said Peter Englund, the academy's permanent secretary. The reaction in a winner's homeland "doesn't enter into our calculus."

Mo writes of visceral pleasures and existential quandaries and tends to create vivid, mouthy characters. While his early work sticks to a straightforward narrative structure enlivened by vivid descriptions, raunchy humor and farce, his style has evolved, toying with different narrators and embracing a freewheeling style often described as "Chinese magical realism."

Among the works highlighted by the Nobel judges were "Red Sorghum" (1987) and "Big Breasts & Wide Hips" (2004), as well as "The Garlic Ballads." ''Frogs" (2009) looked at forced abortions and other coercive aspects of the government's policies restricting most families to one child.

His output has been prolific, which has contributed to his popularity and his impact. His works have been translated into English, Russian, French, German and many other languages, giving him an audience well beyond the Chinese-speaking world. Mo has a top literary agent, Andrew Wylie, who was at the Frankfurt book fair in Germany when he learned of Mo's Nobel and told The Associated Press: "We are in discussions globally." Several of his books quickly sold out Thursday on Amazon.com, although few copies likely were in stock.

Mo is probably best known to English-language readers for "Red Sorghum," thanks in part to Zhang Yimou's acclaimed film adaptation. The novel has sold nearly 50,000 copies in the U.S., according to the publisher Penguin Group (USA), a strong number for a translated work. Most of Mo's books in the U.S. have been released by Arcade Publishing, whose founder, the late Richard Seaver, had previously worked with Samuel Beckett, Henry Miller and other writers who faced battles with censors.

"Dick Seaver was Mo Yan's champion from the beginning and admired this exceptional writer's unique and original voice," Seaver's widow, Jeannette Seaver, said in a statement. "He was constantly reading passages to me."

Mo has said that censorship is a great spur to creativity.

"In our real life there might be some sharp or sensitive issues that (censors) do not wish to touch upon," he said in an interview with the literary magazine Granta earlier this year. "At such a juncture a writer can inject their own imagination to isolate them from the real world or maybe they can exaggerate the situation ? making sure it is bold, vivid and has the signature of our real world."

Even so, Mo, who started writing while in the army, has steered clear from criticizing the government in public. He has been accused of refusing to appear with dissident writers at overseas literary seminars. The award stirred the criticisms anew.

"Some are opposed to his winning the Nobel Prize because he serves as a vice chair of the China Writers' Association and helps the government in censorship. But some are supportive, arguing literature should not be linked to politics but be valued on its own merit," said Murong Xuecun, the pen name of author Hao Qun, who has become more outspoken about censorship in recent years.

Yu Jie, an essayist and close friend of imprisoned Nobel laureate Liu who fled to the U.S. this year, was more acid. "This reflects the West's disregard for China's human rights problems. Mo Yan's win is not a victory for literature. It's a victory for the Communist Party," Yu said on his Twitter feed.

The government ignored the controversy and instead focused on the prize as emblematic of China's now recognized status as a great nation. "China is winning more and more respect from the world. We can say this award is not only for Mo Yan but to all the Chinese people," state-run television said in a commentary.

For many Chinese and his supporters, the award was welcome for recognizing an acclaimed author and for steering clear of past Nobel controversies.

"For me personally it's the realization of a dream I've had for years finally coming true. It's suddenly a reality," said Mo's publisher, Cao Yuanyong, deputy editor-in-chief of Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House. Cao said he and a dozen colleagues were toasting Mo in his absence with red wine in a Shanghai restaurant Thursday night. The prize is worth 8 million kronor, or about $1.2 million.

Born in 1955 to a farming family, his early education was cut short by the Cultural Revolution, a decade of political chaos when many of China's schools closed down. To escape rural poverty, he joined the army in 1976 and, while still a soldier, started writing in 1981.

His breakthrough came with "Red Sorghum." Set in a small village, it is an earthy tale of love and peasant struggles set against the backdrop of the anti-Japanese war. It was turned into a film that won the top prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1988. Amy Tan, author of the best-selling "The Joy Luck Club," became an early admirer.

Goldblatt, who has translated nine of Mo's books, remembered meeting the author in Beijing in the late 1990s, when the two had dinner.

"We didn't have any chemistry and we sat there, silent the whole time," Goldblatt said. "I tried to strike up a conversation and nothing happened. Then, he pulled out a cigarette, and although I had quit smoking, I said, 'Why not?' We were best friends from then on."

HBT: Rival execs hate Rizzo, hope Nats lose

Based on how the comments around here have gone lately, I?m sure someone will soon chime in to say that USA Today?s Bob Nightengale made these quotes up and that the world is biased against the Nationals. But until then, let us marvel at what a rival general manager ? or maybe two, it?s hard to tell based on how he attributes it ? said about Mike Rizzo and the Nats after yesterday?s Nats loss:

?If we don?t win the World Series, I don?t care who does,? one general manager told USA TODAY Sports, ?as long as it?s not those guys.

?They don?t deserve to win it. Not after what they did.?

Said a National League GM: ?I hope they go down in flames. I hope it takes another 79 years before they get back to the playoffs. That?s how strongly I feel about it.?

The bile ? which Nightengale says some other executives besides this one feel ? is based on both the Strasburg shutdown, which apparently gave other execs the impression that Rizzo thought he was smarter than everyone else, and Rizzo?s statement after the Nationals clinched that there would be ?a couple more? such division titles in the future.

It?s kind of crazy that someone would actually come out and say that. Especially the first part of the quote which, from context, is not the most anonymous quote in the world. ?Based on the ?if we don?t win it? line, it seems that would have to be an NL GM whose team is still in the playoffs, right? ?Which means it was either the Giants Brian Sabean, the Reds Walt Jocketty or the Cardinals John Mozeliak. So which of them is throwing poop on Rizzo?

The playoffs, man. It makes folks crazy.

Telecom Stock Outlook ? Oct. 2012 | Industry News

The unprecedented growth of high-speed Internet traffic, particularly for wireless data and video, has transformed the Telecommunications industry into the foremost evolving, inventive and keenly contested space. Similarly, the emergence of mobile broadband technology has created several new service areas, which potentially offers huge growth potential. This includes IPTV, collaboration and cloud computing, videoconferencing and mobile payment, to call a couple of.

Research firm Gartner reports that worldwide revenue of telecom service providers is anticipated to achieve $1.686 trillion in 2012, an improvement of one.4% year over year. Similarly, worldwide revenue of telecom equipment manufacturers is anticipated to achieve $377 billion in 2012, improving 10.8% year over year.

Recent Performance

Despite the slow moving U.S. economy, the outlook for the U.S. telecommunications industry remains favorable. It really is evident from the stock price movement of the big nationwide carriers.

During the primary three quarters of 2012, the stock price of verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and AT&T Inc. (T) was up a respective 19.1% and 29.3%, while the stock price of Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) shot up 135.9%. Compared, over a similar period of time, the benchmark S&P 500 index was up by just 12.8%.

Structure

The telecommunications industry encompasses myriad technology-related businesses. Besides the legacy local and long-distance phone services, the telecommunications industry also includes wireless communications, Internet services, fiber optics networks, cable TV networks and commercial satellite communications.

A major characteristic of the telecommunications industry is the high barriers to entry as a consequence of scarcity of public airwaves (spectrum). The U.S. telecom market is controlled by just four national players, as regional low-cost operators don?t seem to be eligible to compete with these large carriers.

Furthermore, it?s not easy to determine a brand new telecom carrier because it would require government permission to transmit voice, data, and video on public airwaves. Spectrum licenses are limited and therefore quite expensive. Moreover, deployment of network infrastructure, whether high-speed wireless (3G/4G) or wireline (fiber optic), requires significant capital expenditure, which only a few entities can afford.

Key Attribute

We believe that the whole economic dynamics may shift in favor of telecommunications industry, primarily because of its key attribute of being a tremendous infrastructure product for both the emerging and the developed nations. Telecommunications is probably the only a few industries which witnessed massive technological improvement even under recession. The key thrust of the telecommunications sector is backed by continuous network and product upgrade and invention by the industry players.

For the last 15 years, the U.S. wireless sector invested a major $300 billion to put in the best seamless communications networks on the earth. The telecommunications industry as an entire generates over 2.4 million jobs within the U.S., that is expected to grow by another 200,000 in 2012 attributable to increasing adoption of next-generation super-fast 4G LTE networks.

Growing demand for technically superior products was the silver lining for the telecommunication industry in an otherwise tough environment. These developments also are helping telecom equipment manufacturers, infrastructure solutions providers, and cellphone makers to consolidate their finances.

Wireless is the Key

Despite the big growth in fiber-to-the-home networks, we believe wireless networks would be the key player inside the telecom industry growth story. Besides, the arena is witnessing a fundamental change. Earlier, it was voice calls that brought money to the operators. Currently, data and video became the focal point.

Any new network standard aims at faster data connectivity, quick video streaming with high resolution, and rich multimedia applications. Currently, the U.S. has approximately 300 million wireless subscribers.

Spectrum Crunch & Market Saturation

The U.S. wireless industry is facing acute spectrum shortages, sometime leading to data packet dropping. Carriers are investing heavily for more beneficial utilization in their existing spectrum holding and try hard to feature more spectrums to their portfolio.

In addition to the four nationwide carriers, each of the smaller pre-paid wireless operators also are picking a valid LTE network to supply hassle free broadband video streaming and knowledge transmission. Meanwhile, smartphone penetration has crossed kind of 1/2 the entire U.S. post-paid wireless subscribers.

Severe spectrum crunch coupled with gradual smartphone market saturation is forcing the wireless operators to seem for other options to elevate revenue. These include new pricing plans, a shift from unlimited data usage to tier-based data usage, and better upgrade fees for smartphones so that you can offset handset subsidies. As a matter of fact, the common revenue per user for many of the wireless carriers is rising over the past two years and is anticipated to grow within the long time primarily because of massive growth in mobile data usage.

As smartphone users at the moment are increasingly downloading multimedia contents, video has become the main driver of network traffic. What?s more interesting, as well as download, the smartphone and tablet users are uplinking an increasing number of video content and, in turn, becoming broadcasters of their own right. Several industry researchers expect video to account for 60% of total network traffic by the tip of 2012.

Near-term Catalysts

The U.S. telecommunications industry might be benefit within the near future from two developments: (1) recent approval of the FCC to initiate a fresh round of spectrum auction for the wireless industry; (2) significant technological inventions and innovations that make even a mature market just like the U.S. highly lucrative for the telecom operators.

On September 28, the FCC decided to disencumber spectrum currently utilized by TV broadcasters for commercial wireless networks and to deploy a nationwide interoperable public-safety broadband network. Huge proliferation of smartphones, tablets, and a number of other pocket-sized mobile devices significantly raised the demand for bandwidth for seamless wireless connectivity. The spectrum auction is anticipated to shore up $15 billion within the U.S. government exchequer.

Moreover, a recovering economy hurries up the demand for real-time voice, data, and video manifold. The FCC has estimated that inside the next five years, mobile-data demand will grow 25-50 folds from its current level. These latest developments are enabling the telecom service providers to undertake large network extension while upgrading plans. The call of Congress is principally aimed to resolve growing consumer demand for efficient wireless networks.

Merger and Acquisition to Continue

The failed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile USA appears to have propelled the latter to social gathering with MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS) to enhance its competitive position. AT&T needs spectrum to compete with its bigger rival verizon Wireless. verizon recently bought spectrum from major cable MSOs including Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), time warner Cable Inc. (TWC) and Bright House Networks. dish network Corp. (DISH), which holds an outsized wireless spectrum, has already declared that it isn?t averse to a deal as an acquirer or an acquired entity.

Competition Looms Large

Technological upgrades and breakthroughs have led to a cut-throat telecommunications industry. Product life-cycle and upgrade-cycle had been reduced drastically as several firms are popping out with new kinds of services and products within a brief span of time. Increasing competition is essentially forcing each player to supply heterogeneous and bundled services.

We might even see more product sharing deals between telecom, cable TV, and satellite TV operators as each of those players are attempting to get a foothold into another?s territory. Even pay-TV services, offerings to business enterprises and mobile backhaul and metro-Ethernet segments may witness more convergence. Cellphone makers at the moment are gradually offering tablets (small laptops); chipset manufacturers are offering personal computers and cellphones are often interchanging their areas of operations.

OPPORTUNITIES

The telecommunications industry as a complete offers various attributes which can be difficult to disregard from the standpoint of investors.

  • Telecommunications ? an important utility: The will for telecom in both rural and concrete areas, and its role within the infrastructure of both developed and developing markets, will keep growing. Similarly, economic stimulus plans within the U.S. and within the world should boost select service providers and kit manufacturers.
  • Structural subsidies: The Broadband Stimulus Program of the U.S. government has received significant acceptance among rural carriers. President Barack Obama has endorsed a wireless spectrum hike plan proposed by the FCC, so one can nearly double the currently available spectrum for wireless broadband services while increasing Internet connectivity. The FCC including the U.S. Department of Commerce will identify unused airwaves to boost the available spectrum size to 500 MHz within the next 10 years.
  • International diversification: Though diversification within a rustic offers only limited protection within the current highly-correlated world equity markets, it offers hedging opportunities from local economic weakness and associated foreign exchange differentials.

The corporations that match well with the aforementioned considerations include AT&T Inc. (T), Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS).

WEAKNESSES

Generally telecommunications companies that were stressed have high debt levels and massive financial leverage ratios or are unable to deal with the hot market trends. Other risks that remain are as follows:

  • Potential business slowdown: Lower overall top-line sales among carriers are expected to continue to weigh on capital spending decisions ? a main problem faced by equipment vendors. The firms are expected to stay concerned about improving their balance sheet, financial discipline and free cash-flow generation. Unfortunately, for the equipment vendors, the process of choice for bettering free cash flows remains disciplined capital outlays.
  • Market saturation: Slow growth of the postpaid wireless subscribers within the second quarter of 2012 indicates potential market saturation. The four major U.S wireless carriers added a net 405,000 postpaid subscribers, that?s under 1/2 the internet subscribers these companies together added within the year-ago quarter.
  • Increased competition: The markets for broadband wireless solutions are emerging rapidly by way of technological innovation. The pure wireless/wireline service providers started entering the video services marketplace for cable operators, while the cable MSOs are entering the phone business for the small- and medium-sized business enterprises.

Showing signs of the abovementioned weaknesses include SK Telecom Co. Ltd. (SKM), Telefonica Brasil S.A. (VIV) and NII Holdings Inc. (NIHD).

The Importance of Customer Support | Business 2 Community

Customer support used to be an afterthought. Now, support has become a standard component of the product package, and is an area in which companies can, and do, distinguish themselves from their competition. With customer experience management bookmarked on every C-Level?s laptop, all service and support channels are being scrutinized for improvement opportunities. Providing consistent, superior customer support experiences is an optimal way to increase customer loyalty ? and increase revenue.

3 Reasons You Should Improve Your Customer Support

There are numerous definitions of customer support, and many facets of the support discipline. Yet, the measure of success for all support channels is customer satisfaction. A simple concept on the surface, but with different customers having widely varying issues and expectations, the solution is not a one-size-fits-all answer. Here are five reasons you should improve your customer support:

  1. Satisfaction Varies. Delivering great customer support means customizing service to the unique needs of each customer. Each customer?s issue will be different from that of other customers, and even different from that same customer?s prior experience. Support employees must be able to tailor solutions to effectively resolve customer issues, each and every time.
  2. Support Channels Evolve. Technology is advancing at a rapid pace and now there are a multitude of support channels available to customers. Your customers will choose the support channel of their preference, and your team must be able to deliver a consistent support experience regardless of whether the support channel is web chat, phone, or face-to-face.
  3. Revenue Increases. When customers experience consistently great support ? they talk about it. They tell friends, family, and colleagues. Loyal customers will not only purchase many times, they will also encourage their peers to purchase, which significantly increases company revenue.

Can Your Employees Provide Great Customer Support?

New customer support employees rarely walk onto the call-floor or the client?s location fully prepared for the tasks at hand. Exemplary customer support employees are developed, and development requires technical skills training, communication skills training, and regular coaching from supervisors and management.

Superior customer support teams must strive for continuous improvement. In an arena of constant new product releases and new support channels to maintain, your customer support employees need training to stay one step ahead of your competitors. An investment in customer support is a must. Providing consistent, superior customer support is a revenue generator, and an effectual way to differentiate your company from its rivals.

Syria says plane from Russia carried legal cargo | News | GMA ...

DAMASCUS - Syria said on Thursday a Damascus-bound plane forced to land in Ankara by Turkish fighter jets while en route from Moscow had been carrying legitimate cargo.

?

The Foreign Ministry said the Turkish action violated international law and showed Ankara's "hostile policy" towards Syria.

?

"All contents of the civilian Syrian plane that Turkish authorities forced to land at Ankara airport were listed on the statutory bill of lading and on the plane's manifest. It was not carrying any kind of weapons or prohibited goods," the ministry said in a statement.

?

The head of Syrian Arab Airlines, Ghaida Abdulatif, said the cargo consisted of civilian packages with electrical equipment which had been officially registered.

?

The state news agency SANA also quoted Abdulatif as saying Turkish authorities "assaulted the plane's crew before it was allowed to take off", without giving details.

?

Lebanon's al-Manar Television earlier quoted Syria's transport minister as describing Turkey's action as an act of air piracy.

?

Turkish officials suspected it was carrying military equipment to Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad's forces are fighting rebels.

?

The Foreign Ministry said that by using military means to force the plane to land, the Turkish government violated international laws.

?

"The sudden appearance of military aircraft, without justification or warning, threatened the safety of the plane and passengers," it said.

?

"This hostile and deplorable Turkish act is an additional indication of the hostile policy of Erdogan's government, considering that it trains and harbors terrorists and helps them infiltrate into and bombard Syrian territory."

?

Turkey, once an ally of Assad, has become a leading international voice calling for him to quit and has allowed rebel leaders sanctuary on its territory.

?

The cargo incident adds to increased tensions as the two sides square off against each other along their border after Syrian artillery fire landed on Turkish soil last week.

?

The Syrian Foreign Ministry statement added a conciliatory note, saying that despite the Turkish government's aggressive behavior, Syria still wanted to maintain friendly relations with the Turkish people.

?

Airlines chief Abdulatif said Turkey's action was "inhumane" and that the airline would lodge a complaint with international aviation authorities. ? Reuters

Insomnia can make workplace safety in Alabama a nightmare ...

Maybe it was a long night; the baby is teething and just cried until sunrise. Maybe stress kept you up. Or maybe for no reason at all, you just couldn't sleep. Tossing and turning through the night can make the following workday feel agonizing for workers in Alabama or anywhere else. You are nodding off and your eyes are losing focus as you are attempting to do your job. It seems that the only thing you have enough energy to do is watch the clock until you can go home and try to take a nap.

Several studies have concluded that insomnia has a serious impact on the work environment. How much? One journal found that insomnia results in $63.2 billion dollars in lost productivity and other expenses each year. A significant portion of that sum was the result of workplace accidents and workers' compensation benefits paid to injured workers in accidents stemming from sleep deprivation.

According to a psychiatric journal, an estimated 274,000 workplace errors and accidents occurred last year resulting from insomnia. In some instances, a sleep deprived worker in Alabama can make an error like sending an email to the wrong client and losing their business. However, sometimes the accidents are much more detrimental. For example, a construction worker could nod off while operating heavy machinery and critically injure a fellow worker.

The conclusion is that an estimated 7.2 percent of workplace errors are the result of insomnia. It is a serious cause for concern. If a worker in Alabama is injured because of an insomnia-related accident or error, they should be covered by their employer for medical bills and missed wages.

Misleading Anti-Marriage Ads in Maine. AFER Corrects False ...

Two new anti-gay ads just started running in Maine this week. And as usual, they?re full of misleading, hurtful statements.

We can break down the claims in these commercials by using the testimony from AFER?s Prop. 8 trial. That case was like a marriage equality ?truth commission? that, for the first time, examined our opponents? claims in a federal court of law. And we found that in court, where there?s no room to hide behind misleading statements and vague threats, the arguments of our opponents simply have no basis in fact. They melt away.

Here?s the first ad:

?If Question 1 passes, redefining marriage, we can expect consequences for Mainers.?

Let?s stop right there. Question 1 is the ballot measure that would allow the state to issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. If it doesn?t pass, the consequences for Mainers is clear: no marriage for gays and lesbians. That is immediately harmful to those couples and their kids.

So, what are they claiming are the consequences if it does pass? Well, that?s a lot less clear.

?I was a successful school counselor in Maine for over 20 years. Once nominated as teacher of the year. Yet when I supported traditional marriage, they tried to get me fired.?

This is Don Mendell. And what he?s not telling you is that he didn?t just support an anti-gay law. He went on television and attacked gay and lesbian Mainers, despite being a school counselor at a public high school. Here he is back in 2009:

?Prevent Question 1 from being pushed on Maine students.?

Mendell wrote that LGBT couples ?use children?s trusting nature to turn them against the natural law.?

Words like these do profound harm to young gay and lesbian people, especially when they come from a school counselor. That?s why he was investigated.

?When gay marriage has become law elsewhere, people who disagree with it have been fired, sued, fined, and punished.?

There are a lot of problems with this statement. Don wasn?t fired, sued, fined, or punished. The complaints against him were dismissed.

And marriage equality wasn?t even law during that time. So, whether or not gay and lesbian couples could get married, the complaints against him would have been exactly the same. In other words, marriage equality didn?t cause his problems. He caused them by speaking out against the very kids in his care.

The fact is, nobody gets punished just for having an opinion. There are only consequences for harassing people, or attacking them, or using public resources to discriminate, or using your position of authority to cause harm.

And that?s just what these marriage bans do. During the Prop. 8 trial, Professor Lee Badgett testified that laws like Prop. 8 have ?inflicted substantial economic harm on same sex couples and their children.?

And Professor Gary Segura pointed out ?There is no group in American society who has been targeted by ballot initiatives more than gays and lesbians.?

Now let?s take a look at the second ad.

?Marriage as a man and a woman has served Maine for hundreds of years.?

Well, it?s served some people for hundreds of years. Others, like gay and lesbian Mainers, have been out of luck.

?Marriage is more than what adults want for themselves. It?s also about the next generation.?

That?s true. And it?s why it?s so important that gay and lesbian parents be allowed to get married. Not just for themselves, for the children that they?re raising. One of the Prop. 8 proponents? own witnesses admitted as much on the stand during the trial. David Blankenhorn testified, ?same-sex marriage would likely contribute to more stability and to longer-lasting relationships for same-sex couples.?

He added that the freedom to marry ?would extend a wide range of the natural and practical benefits of marriage to many lesbian and gay couples and their children,? and that it would be ?a victory for the worthy ideas of tolerance and inclusion.?

Blankenhorn?s admissions are persuasive. So persuasive, in fact, that he eventually changed his mind, and he?s now a supporter of marriage equality.

Straight couples do a great job of raising the next generation. But they?re not the only ones doing it.

?Maine law prohibits discrimination against gay men and lesbians??

That?s true. And the reason that we prohibit discrimination is that it hurts all of society, and helps no one. As the Ninth Circuit ruled, ?Prop. 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California ? The Constitution simply does not allow for ?laws of this sort.??

?And same-sex couples already have the legal protections of marriage in virtually all matters.?

Did you catch that? Virtually all matters. They?re admitting that domestic partnerships are unequal, but trying to make it okay by saying, in essence, ?close enough.?

?Anything remaining can be addressed without redefining marriage.?

No. It can?t. We?ve tried. You need an army of lawyers and thousands of dollars to try to close the gap between a domestic partnership and a marriage. Not to mention, California?s had domestic partnerships since 1999, and every single year they have to pass new laws to try to close loopholes that prevent gay and lesbian couples from being treated equally.

At this point in our country?s history, we can say with confidence that separate is not equal. And it never will be.

By the way, you might be wondering who?s paying for these embarrassing ads. The answer is: we don?t know.

What we do know is that the National Organization for Marriage is funneling a ton of money into Maine without reporting their funding sources. And they recently lost a lawsuit over that secrecy. They?re now compelled to report their donors in Maine. But so far, they haven?t.

We?re now less than a month away from the election. And the polling in Maine is encouraging, but it could still go either way, since surveys generally overstate support for the freedom to marry.

Now is a crucial time to get involved in Maine, as well as in Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington. Visit afer.org/election2012 for ways that you can support the freedom to marry in those states. Together, we can push back against these misleading, dangerous messages.
