    ABSTRACT

Background: Sixty percent of Internet users report using the Internet to look for health information. Social media sites are emerging as a potential source for online health information. However, little is known about how people use social media for such purposes.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to establish the frequency of various types of online health-seeking behaviors, and (2) to identify correlates of 2 health-related online activities, social networking sites (SNS) for health-related activities and consulting online user-generated content for answers about health care providers, health facilities, or medical treatment.
Methods: The study consisted of a telephone survey of 1745 adults who reported going online to look for health-related information. Four subscales were created to measure use of online resources for (1) using SNS for health-related activities; (2) consulting online rankings and reviews of doctors, hospitals or medical facilities, and drugs or medical treatments; (3) posting a review online of doctors, hospitals or medical facilities, and drugs or medical treatments, and (4) posting a comment or question about health or medical issues on various social media. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed.
Results: Respondents consulted online rankings or reviews (41.15%), used SNS for health (31.58%), posted reviews (9.9%1), and posted a comment, question, or information (15.19%). Respondents with a chronic disease were nearly twice as likely to consult online rankings (odds ratio [OR] 2.09, 95% CI 1.66-2.63, P<.001). Lower odds of consulting online reviews were associated with less formal education (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.37-0.65, P<.001) and being male (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.57-0.87, P<.001). Respondents with higher incomes were 1.5 times as likely to consult online rankings or reviews (OR 1.49, 95% CI 0.10-2.24, P=.05), than respondents with a regular provider (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.52-2.78, P<.001), or living in an urban/suburban location (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.17-2.22, P<.001). Older respondents were less likely to use SNS for health-related activities (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.95-0.97, P<.001), as were males (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.56-0.87, P<.001), whereas respondents with a regular provider had nearly twice the likelihood of using SNS for health-related activities (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.43-2.52, P<.001).
Conclusions: People are using social media for seeking health information. However, individuals are more likely to consume information than they are to contribute to the dialog. The inherent value of ?social? in social media is not being captured with online health information seeking. People with a regular health care provider, chronic disease, and those in younger age groups are more likely to consult online rankings and reviews and use SNS for health-related activities.

    KEYWORDS

social media; Internet; health information; consumer

The Internet is becoming an increasingly common source of health information. Approximately 60% of Internet users report using the Internet to look for health information [1,2]. In addition to seeking health information, Wen et al [3] found that 15% of Internet users also tracked personal health information on the Internet. Determinants of seeking health information online include education, gender, race, age, presence of children in the home, having a poor personal health condition, and geographic residence [1,4-7]. Similarly, predictors of using the Internet to track personal health information include gender, race, education, and having a health care provider [3].

Historically, online health seeking meant visiting an agency- or organization-sponsored website. Recently, social media sites are emerging as a potential source of online health information [8]. Social media refers to ?activities, practices, and behaviors among communities of people who gather online to share information, knowledge, and opinions using conversational media? [9]. These social media are broadly categorized as forums and message boards, review and opinion sites, social networks (eg, Facebook), blogging and microblogging (eg, Twitter), bookmarking, and media sharing (eg, YouTube) [10].

Individual use of social media is steadily increasing. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of adult Internet users in the United States are involved with a type of social media called social networking sites (SNS), such as MySpace, Facebook, or LinkedIn [11]. Technorati currently registers over 1.3 million blogs [12], 13 percent of Internet users (140 million people) have a Twitter account [13,14], and Facebook has 955 million active users [15]. By 2015, it is estimated that the number of individuals and corporations who have social networking accounts will reach over 3 billion [16].

Social media and SNS use varies by demographics. There are statistically significant differences in SNS use between younger and older ages and between males and females [11]. However, SNS are used fairly equally across education, income, race/ethnicity, and rural and urban locations [11]. Chou and colleagues [17] found that age and education were predictors of 3 forms of social media use (ie, participating in online support groups, blogging, and visiting a SNS).

In contrast to going online to seek health information, social media technologies allow online social media users to create, distribute, and share information independent of an organization. The level of use and involvement with social media technologies varies by individual. Bernoff and Anderson [18] and Li and Bernoff [19] classify individuals based on how they use social media. These classifications, although not mutually exclusive, include creators, conversationalists, critics, collectors, joiners, or spectators. Similarly, Hoffman and Novak [20] identify 4 goals for social media use: create, connect, consume, and control. The main conclusion from both typologies is that the range of social media activities that people engage in varies from consuming to creating content.

Despite the near ubiquity of social media use and the high prevalence of health information seeking on the Internet, there is a dearth of literature about the characteristics of people who use social media for seeking health information and how these people engage with social media. Thus, additional research is needed to determine whether social media users are primarily spectators, or if they are creators or critics. That is, are they looking for information or are they becoming part of the information creation and sharing process? Knowing the correlates of social media use for health information can allow health professionals to more accurately segment populations and tailor interventions accordingly. Therefore, the aim of this research was two-fold. First, to establish the frequency of various forms (eg, spectators, creators, or critics) of online health-seeking behaviors. Second, this research seeks to identify correlates of 2 health-related online activities: (1) using SNS for health-related activities, and (2) consulting online user-generated content for answers about health care providers, health facilities, or medical treatment.

    Data Source and Sample

The data for this study were taken from the 2010 Health Tracking Survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research on behalf of the Pew Internet & American Life Project [21]. The data were collected during August to September 2010 through a telephone survey that included both cell phones and landlines. A random digit method was used to select participants who were US residents, aged 18 years and older, and who spoke English (n=3001). Data were weighted to the most recent US Census Bureau?s Current Population Survey. Data were stripped of identifying information and made available to the public. For the current study, inclusion criteria were adults who used the Internet at least occasionally (Pew question Q6a) and who reported going online to look for health-related information (Pew question healthseek). The final sample size was 1745.

    Measures

    Demographic, Socioeconomic, and Health Status

Demographic, socioeconomic, and health status covariates included ethnicity, education, income, gender, age, race, marital status, having a chronic health condition, geographic community type, health insurance status, and having a family doctor or health care professional. Response categories for race, education, and marital status were collapsed to account for small cell sizes.

To measure an individual?s level of social media health engagement, we created 4 subscales based on related survey items. Each of the response variables were dichotomous and coded as yes or no. We calculated Cronbach alpha to estimate internal reliability for each scale.

Used Social Networking Sites for Health-Related Activities

The 5 questions that focused on using SNS for health-related activities included (1) get health information, (2) start or join a health-related group, (3) follow your friend?s personal health experiences or health updates, (4) raise money or draw attention to a health-related issue or cause, and (5) remember or memorialize others who suffered from a certain health condition (Pew questions Q26a-e). The composite scale had an internal reliability of Cronbach alpha=.66

    Consulted Online Rankings or Reviews

Three questions focused on consulting online rankings or reviews of (1) doctors or other providers, (2) hospitals or other medical facilities, and (3) particular drugs or medical treatments (Pew questions Q29a-c; Cronbach alpha=.69).

    Posted a Review Online

Three questions focused on whether respondents had posted a review online of (1) a doctor, (2) a hospital, or (3) his/her experiences with a particular drug or medical treatment (Pew questions Q29d-f; Cronbach alpha=.61)

Posted a Comment or Question on Social Media

Five questions asked if respondents had posted comments, questions, or information about health or medical issues on various social media. These included (1) an online discussion, a listserv, or other online group forum, (2) a blog, (3) a social networking site, such as Facebook, MySpace, or LinkedIn, (4) Twitter or another status update site, and (5) a website of any kind, such as a health site or news site that allows comments and discussion (Pew questions Q25a-e; Cronbach alpha=.80)

    Data Analysis

Unadjusted univariate analyses of demographics, socioeconomic, and health status variables with each social media?health engagement scale were computed. Variables that were significantly associated with the dependent variable were included in a multivariate regression model. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with social media health engagement as the dependent variable and the demographics, socioeconomic, and health status variables as covariates. All analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA).

    Demographic Characteristics

More than half of the study sample was female (56.16%, 980/1745) and white (79.20%, 1382/1745) (see Table 1). College graduates comprised 39.43% (689/1745) of the sample, 29.46% (514/1745) reported a household income between US $75,000 and $150,000, and 86.88% (1516/1745) reported having health insurance. Respondents reported consulting online rankings or reviews (41.15%, 718/1745) and using SNS for health (31.58%, 551/1745) more than they reported contributing content through posting reviews of doctors, hospitals, drugs, or medical treatments (9.91%, 173/1745), or posting a comment, question, or information about health or medical issues on a blog, SNS, Twitter, website, or online discussion or forum (15.19%, 265/1745).

Correlates of Social Media Health Engagement and Regression Analyses

Regression analyses revealed few correlates for posting reviews of a doctor, hospital, drug, or medical treatment (chronic disease, income, age, health insurance) and for posting a comment, question, or information on various social media sites (chronic disease, age, marital status). Therefore, the further analysis and data presented here are limited to using SNS for health and consulting online rankings or reviews.

An examination of correlates of consulting online rankings or reviews identifies several factors that are associated with higher use of online rankings and reviews (see Table 2). For example, approximately half (49.27%, 339/688) of those with a college degree reported using online rankings or reviews compared with 40.71% (204/501) of those with some college and 31.50% (172/546) of those with a high school education or less. Factors associated with use of SNS for health included income, gender, age, marital status, and having a personal or family doctor or health care provider.

Unadjusted Regression Analyses for Consulting Online Rankings

Unadjusted regression analyses revealed numerous factors associated with consulting online rankings or reviews of doctors, hospitals, drugs, or medical treatments (see Table 3). Having a chronic disease, reporting a higher annual income, living in an urban/suburban location, reporting health insurance coverage, and having a regular health care provider were each independently associated with increased odds of consulting online rankings. Decreased odds were observed among older respondents, those who were unmarried, those with lower levels of education, males, and those who were black/African American.

Unadjusted Regression Analyses for Using Social Networking Sites for Health

Table 4 presents the results of the unadjusted regression analyses for using SNS for health-related activities, such as getting information, joining a group, following friends? health experiences, raising money, increasing awareness, or remembering or memorializing others. Older respondents and males were each less likely to engage in such behaviors. Respondents who reported being unmarried or having a regular health care provider were more likely to use SNS for health-related purposes.

Adjusted Regression Analyses for Consulting Online Rankings

Results from adjusted regression analyses (see Table 3) revealed that respondents with a chronic disease were nearly twice as likely to consult online rankings as respondents who were free of chronic disease (OR 2.09, 95% CI 1.66-2.63, P<.001). For levels of education, high school or less (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.37-0.66, P<.001) and some college (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.54-0.91, P=.01) were each associated with lower odds of consulting online rankings than respondents who had at least obtained a college degree. With respect to income, respondents who reported an annual income of US $75,000 to $150,000 were 1.5 times as likely to consult online rankings (OR 1.49, 95% CI 0.10-2.24, P=.05) compared to those making less than US $20,000. Males were less likely than females (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.57-0.87, P<.001), whereas respondents who have a regular provider were more than 2 times more likely to consult online rankings (OR 2.05, 95% CI 1.52-2.78, P<.001). Living in an urban/suburban location was associated with a 60% increased chance of consulting rankings (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.17-2.22, P<.001). In the adjusted model, marital status, race, and insurance coverage were not significantly associated with consulting online rankings. Likewise, the influence of having a health care provider and income was attenuated.

Adjusted Regression Analyses for Using Social Networking Sites for Health

Adjusted odds ratios for using SNS for health-related purposes are presented in Table 4. As respondents? ages increased, their likelihood for using such sites decreased (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.95-0.97, P<.001). With respect to gender, males had lower odds than females (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.56-0.87, P<.001). Compared to respondents without a regular health care provider, respondents with a regular provider had nearly twice the likelihood of using SNS for health-related activities (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.43-2.52, P<.001), a greater influence than in the unadjusted model. Marital status was not significantly associated with using SNS for health-related activities.

When Paradigms Collide | Envisioning Online Learning

Note: In this post and others to follow, I depart from observations about online trends, instructional technology, and even strategic planning, to focus on the essential issue of teaching and learning. We are in the midst of a ?paradigm shift? in teaching and learning at all levels of education, with significant implications as to how instruction will take place in the future. These posts will focus on the anticipated changes and what they bode for the academy.

    What is a Paradigm?

It was Thomas Kuhn, in his influential classic, ?The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,? that is credited with the term ?paradigm shift.? He defined it as a set of assumptions and rules that create the framework in which the scientific community operates. Other theorists applied his idea to changes outside of science, particularly in the realm of the social sciences. ?For example, John Tagg (citation at end of post) sees its relevance to organizations, and defines ?organizational paradigm? as ?. . . the framework of examples, models and rules that define the boundaries of an organization?s proper activities and that generates new rules governing those activities. . . . ?The paradigm that governs an organization often cannot be?or never is?explicitly?stated. But through living and working in an organization, one learns the paradigm that defines it in practice.? (Tagg, p. 15, full reference below).

    Why Paradigms Matter

Paradigms are more than philosophical constructs. They have tremendous implications for how we see the world and how we approach problems. So for example, if we have a disease or condition afflicting a group of people, the allopathic (medical) paradigm would seek a vaccine, drug or surgical procedure or chemical/radiation therapy to address it. Alternative treatments, even if they have proven efficacy, would not be considered within that paradigm. Thus, many safe modalities practiced for generations would be dismissed as ?quackery? regardless of their positive effects. This deprives us of viable health choices that may deliver results without the side effects inherent in the allopathic model which currently has a virtual monopoly in our health care system. Why doesn?t a new paradigm take its place?

    The Power of the Paradigm

People, institutions, prestige, power and money all come into play in preserving an existing paradigm, regardless of how wrong-headed, destructive and costly it may be. We would like to presume that a better model would displace a previous flawed one. As already explained, this is just not the case. In actuality, any new paradigm will be vigorously opposed by those benefitting from the existing paradigm. Think of getting 20 plus years of education to become a medical doctor. Overnight, a new paradigm is touted as having the answers to health issues. Would you gladly embrace this new paradigm if your livelihood was threatened? ?99.9% of doctors would not, which explains why less than one-tenth of 1% of physicians practicing in the U.S. would be considered as practicing alternative or complementary medicine.

The sad reality is that practitioners (fully accredited, licensed and accomplished in their fields) usually get vilified and their reputations disparaged for even suggesting anything critical of the existing paradigm, or offering alternative therapies. There are many examples I may give. Doctors have been attacked for suggesting a connection between vaccines and autism, for challenging the theory of AIDS and its treatment, for having the courage to oppose many drugs and orthodox therapies that may be dangerous or simply don?t work. As previously stated, the paradigm protects those within it, and opposes those who question it, often with a vehemence and mean-spiritedness that shows the inherent defensiveness of a paradigm on the ropes. So regardless of their merits, existing paradigms are guarded and protected against all new ideas or methods.

    An Educational Paradigm?

Alas, it exists and it is also impervious to change from within. The instructional paradigm has been the predominant one for generations of students ?so much so that we can hardly imagine another way of approaching education. However, like having a medical paradigm that treats patients but rarely restores health, we have an educational paradigm that offers instruction, but often not learning. Both K-12 and higher education are under its spell, and it has produced a host of problems that have been resistant to any ?reform.? ?As detailed in his book, The ?Learning Paradigm College,? John Tagg explains how, for many students, this instructional paradigm has created incentives for surface learning, extrinsic rewards of ?learning (grades/jobs), and passivity in their own learning process.

According to Tagg, one artifact of the Instructional Paradigm is the credit hour, a unit that measures hours of classroom time. ?The credit hour is useful for transfer of credits and assigning workload to faculty, but does it have anything to do with actual learning? Regrettably, ?seat time? does not correlate with student learning as many studies like ?Academically Adrift? report. Another structure that Tagg takes issue with is courses.

?For many policy makers, the meaning of education has changed. Formal processes have become the purpose of the institutions. Courses, which the funding mechanism of public colleges had made the economic backbone of the institutions, had come to define the educational mission in the Instructional Paradigm. The mission of colleges became putting more students in more classes. . . offering courses?had become the end, if not the definition, of higher education.? (Tagg, p. 16-17, ?full reference below)

Only recently, has there been a concerted effort to begin questioning the entire structure, approach, processes, and artifacts of this teacher-centered model. Tagg and others have been in the forefront of such a re-examination of what the real mission of higher education should be, not what it has evolved into, as Tagg decries, ?factories for the production of full-time equivalent students (FTES), transcript generating machines (p. 17). When enough people see the dysfunction of an existing Instructional Paradigm, and are willing to focus their efforts on changing it (which may mean putting their reputations on the line) then real change may be possible. As with most changes in paradigms, it may take a generation of professors to ?leave the stage? before the new student-centered learning paradigm has a chance to take hold. In the meanwhile, we are doing a great disservice to generations of students that must play the game of taking courses to earn a degree, and often only after graduation, can begin the real process of learning.

Twitter cleans up Vine's hashtags, censors #porn, #sex, other naughty terms

    8 hrs.

According to the folks at Twitter, an innocent "human error" was to blame when a pornographic video was featured as an "Editor's Pick" on Vine, but this incident?? combined with a?lack of privacy and abuse prevention controls?? makes it seem as if there's a bit of a porn problem on the new?video-sharing service.

The sudden censorship of certain hashtags further solidifies that belief.

The Verge's Nathan Ingraham was among the first to point out that it appears that the searches for certain naughty hashtags ??such as #porn, #sex, #booty?and similar ??are bringing up no results, even though there are certainly posts with those hashtags.?

I tested this claim by creating a post and tagging it #nsfw. Nothing prevented me from creating this post?? which was entirely innocent, don't worry?? but neither tapping on the hyperlinked hashtag nor searching for #nsfw brought it (or any other posts) into view. Instead, I was shown a frowning emoticon and told that Vine couldn't load any posts. (In the case of searches, the frowning emoticon informed me that no tags matching that term?exist.)?

We have reached out to Twitter to inquire about the missing search results and to see if some sort of cleanup is occurring behind the scenes.?"We're in the process of changing how users find and view sensitive content," a spokesperson explained. "We're experimenting with a number of approaches and will continue to iterate."

Rated 2 out of 5 by not for anything but web surfing. Bought this for my nephew for the game Minecraft. This pc is very slow if you do anything besides check email or web surf. YouTube is slow, couldn't run half decent games. Probably (barely) ok for Farmville or something like that, but not for say, Sims. This was after I removed all the bloatware that came installed, did all windows updates, cut down on all the programs that start at boot, and updated all needed drivers. The CPU just couldn't handle anything. Guess that's abt it. 01/24/2013

IBM sends Watson to NY college to boost its skills

TROY, N.Y. (AP) -- Watson, the supercomputer famous for beating the world's best human "Jeopardy!" champions, is going to college.

IBM is announcing Wednesday that it will provide a Watson system to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the first time the computer is being sent to a university. Just like the flesh-and-blood students who will work on it, Watson is leaving home to sharpen its skills. Course work will include English and math.

"It's a big step for us," said Michael Henesey, IBM's vice president of business development. "We consider it absolutely strategic technology for IBM in the future. And we want to evolve it, of course, thoughtfully, but also in collaboration with the best and brightest in academia."

Watson is a cognitive system that can process massive amounts of data, including natural language. To beat "Jeopardy!" champions in 2011, it was fed the contents of encyclopedias, dictionaries, books, news dispatches and movie scripts. For its medical work, it takes in medical textbooks and journals. After it takes in data, Watson can provide information like a "Jeopardy!" answer, a medical diagnosis or an estimate of financial risk.

IBM, which provided a grant to RPI to operate Watson for three years, sees it as a way to help it boost the computer's cognitive capabilities.

Artificial intelligence researchers at RPI want to do things like improve Watson's mathematical ability and help it quickly figure out the meaning of new or made-up words. They want to improve its ability to handle the torrent of images, videos and emails on the Web, the sort of unstructured information that is overwhelmingly fueling the data boom.

For Selmer Bringsjord, who heads RPI's department of cognitive science, getting a crack at Watson is like a car aficionado being tossed the keys to a souped-up Lamborghini. Bringsjord said he and his graduate students could potentially focus on providing Watson with a deeper understanding of the structure of sentences and how dialogues unfold.

"If I can make a tiny, tiny contribution in that direction, given how historic the system is, I'd be very happy and I think my graduate students would be as well," Bringsjord said.

The original Watson remains at IBM's Research Headquarters in Westchester County, about 100 miles south of the school. RPI has hardware fully dedicated to running the system's software at its supercomputing center in the Rensselaer Tech Park near the school. RPI's version of Watson has 15 terabytes of memory, enough to store a massive library. It will allow 20 users to access the system at once.

IBM has worked collaboratively with other outside institutions on Watson, such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, New York-based Citigroup Inc. and the Cleveland Clinic. But this is the first time hardware fully dedicated to running the Watson software is being installed at a college.

Officials with IBM and RPI say Watson's college tenure also will prepare RPI students for jobs in cognitive science and "big data," a field where demand is quickly outpacing supply. John Kolb, RPI's chief information officer, said he would like the next generation of the school's technology graduates "to help IBM take Watson to the next level."

    >>> we're back now at 7:40 with new questions in the death of mindy mccready 's boyfriend. did he take his life earlier this month or was he murdered? in little rock , arkansas , andrea canning is in little rock , arkansas .

    >> mindy mccready says she just wants to be able to grieve properly but says the sheriff is on a witch hunt . the sheriff says he just wants to keep the case open until more forensic testing can be done.

    >> he didn't just -- he didn't just touch my heart. he touched my soul. he was my soul mate .

    >> reporter: mindy mccready 's life will never be the same after she says her boyfriend, david wilson , took his own life on the front porch of their arkansas lake house .

    >> i've never gone through anything this painful. nor will i ever again go through anything this painful.

    >> reporter: the couple fell in love over music. he was a producer and she was once on top of the country charts with songs like " guys do it all the time guys do it all the time

    >> reporter: her early success was followed by a downward spiral of addiction, arrest and jail time. she made headlines again in 2011 , after going on the run with her son, xander, in the mid midst of a custody battle. then everything changed the night of january 13th .

    >> i started screaming, calling 911. i laid down next to him. i just pleaded with him not to die.

    >> reporter: was he able to say anything? was he able to see you? were his eyes open ?

    >> he was responding.

    >> with words or with a touch?

    >> sounds.

    >> reporter: initially, law enforcement officials only said they had responded to a report of a suicide. the local sheriff now tells nbc news the investigation into the cause of death is ongoing and murder has not been ruled out. mccready is not a suspect. she admits they did argue that night about personal issues. there have been reports out there that david was having an affair.

    >> david was not having an affair with another woman. that is absolutely, totally untrue.

    >> reporter: a published report has raised questions about the shooting, including why the bullet wasn't found until a day later.

    >> i didn't find it. the dog did. it was in the dog's mouth. i mean, that's a horrific thing to say, but it was in the dog's mouth.

    >> reporter: for the record, did you kill david ? did you shoot david ?

    >> oh, my god! no. oh, my god, no! he was my life. we were each other's life.

    >> reporter: do you, 100% believe that david killed himself?

    >> i -- i don't know.

    >> do you think he could have been murdered?

    >> i don't know.

    >> reporter: you have been through so much pain and heartache in your life and, honestly, your life almost plays like a country music song.

    >> i just keep telling myself that the more suffering that i go through, the greater character i'll have.

    >> reporter: once again we want to say mindy mccready is not a suspect in this case. there are no suspects in this case at this time. tests from the arkansas crime lab are due back in a couple of weeks. the sheriff says he will be able to make a determination at that point if this is murder or suicide. matt?

5 Factors that Interfere with the Success of Marriage Counseling ...

    Home

    by BMWK Staff ?|? on January 28th, 2013 ?|?

    by?Amy Morin,

There are many factors that can determine whether or not marriage counseling is successful. It leads to many people asking, why does counseling seem to help some people and not others? Counseling is certainly not an exact science. It also?isn?t?meant to be a miracle cure for all bad relationships. However, most people do benefit from counseling.
But there are couples who just don?t seem to benefit from marriage counseling. Despite attending counseling, their marriage just?doesn?t?seem to improve. It may end in divorce.

So what?s the difference between a couple who experiences success in counseling a couple who leaves counseling determining there is no hope? There are some factors that seem to interfere with the success of counseling.

Looking for Permission to Get Divorced

    Picture 1 of 5

Sadly, many people enter into counseling looking for permission to get divorced. I?ve had couples come into my office that say, ?I just want to be able to tell my kids we tried everything before we divorce.? It?s as if they just want to be able to put a checkmark on a checklist of ?things to do before you divorce? so they can say ?see nothing worked.? Other couples come in saying something to the effect of ?see we can?t get along so we should just divorce, right?? They share about their problems and discuss how nothing seems to work. In essence, they are looking for a counselor to say ?You?ve left no stone unturned. You might as well divorce now.? If you enter into counseling with an open mind about your marriage, it can help. However, if you are looking for permission to get divorced, you likely won?t leave satisfied. Counselors don?t grant you permission to divorce. Instead, they try to help you meet your goals. New Android apps worth downloading: MyScript Calculator update, Hushed, Ikaruga

With MyScript Calculator you can write math problems on the touchscreen rather than typing them in, making it highly intuitive and natural to use. Next is Hushed, an app for creating temporary phone numbers. Finally, bullet hell game Ikaruga fires a crazy amount of mayhem your way.

What?s it about? Simply put, MyScript Calculator is a calculator app that recognizes handwriting, allowing you to write out equations that the app can solve using your device?s touch screen.

What?s cool? It?s pretty obvious, isn?t it? Imagine writing down a math problem on a piece of paper, only to have the problem solve itself. MyScript takes the workings of a calculator out of using a calculator, allowing you to do so much more naturally just by writing. The update to the app is pretty huge, adding a lot of higher-level mathematics, like trigonometry. You can also fix mistakes by using the redo and undo buttons.

Who?s it for? If you find yourself solving math problems, either for school or just everyday life, MyScript Calculator can help.

What?s it like? Pick up RealCalc Scientific Calculator for a more traditional approach to calculating.

What?s it about? Hushed allows you to make calls and send texts from your Android device from disposable numbers, allowing you to hide your real number and protect your information should you ever lose your phone.

What?s cool? You can give out a Hushed number to a new acquaintance or someone you?re considering dating, then dispose of the number if the person turns out to be a creeper. You also can attach numbers to Android devices and use them for as long as you like, allowing you to make calls from a preferred area code or what have you. Each number has voice mail and SMS attached, so you?ll get all the features you would with a normal phone number.

Tornadoes feared as storm tears through Plains

By Ian Johnston and John Newland, Staff Writers, NBC News

The National Weather Service issued tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Oklahoma and Texas early Tuesday as a line of severe weather marched from the Southern Plains toward the southern Ohio Valley.

Dangerous lightning, hail up to an inch in diameter and wind gusts of 70 mph were considered most likely in the tornado-watch area, which extended from Hardeman County, Texas, to Osage County, Okla.

About 6:30 a.m. ET, the NWS was monitoring a severe thunderstorm moving at about 55 mph through Oklahoma, issuing warnings for people to take cover as it approached.

Additionally, the weather service said there was the potential for a ?significant, severe weather event? from Louisiana and Arkansas to Mississippi and southwest Tennessee.

Tornadoes, some of them strong, were also possible in Arkansas, northern Louisiana, southeastern Missouri, western Mississippi and southwestern Tennessee, the NWS added.

Weather.com meteorologist Kevin Roth said that ?severe thunderstorms are expected to develop in central Oklahoma ? during the morning and form into a squall line and march toward the middle and lower Mississippi Valley.?

?Tuesday night the squall line is expected to stretch from the mid-Ohio Valley to the central Gulf Coast,? he added.

Roth said that on Wednesday the threat area was expected to include the upper Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

?Damaging wind gusts are the primary threat, but isolated tornadoes and hail are also possible,? he said.

Meanwhile, the same storm was bringing heavy rain to the Midwest and Great Lakes, Roth added.

?Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is possible from Missouri to Michigan and could cause some flooding,? he said, noting flood watches had been posted from eastern Illinois to southern Michigan.

Smaller Snacking is Smart Snacking: New study shows 'just a bite' will satisfy

Jan. 29, 2013 ? How much chocolate would you need to eat to be satisfied? Less than half as much as you think, according to this recently published Cornell University snacking study. Using chocolate chips, apple pie, and potato chips, researchers Ellen van Kleef, Mitsuru Shimizu, and Brian Wansink designed a study to determine if people who were given smaller portions of snack foods would feel hungrier or satisfied fifteen minutes after eating.

Two groups with different portion sizes were tested. The larger portion size group was given 100g of chocolate, 200g of apple pie, and 80g of potato chips, all slightly larger than the recommended portion sizes. This equaled 1370 calories in snack foods. The other group was given 10g, 40g, and 10g of these same foods respectively, for a total of 195 calories. The two groups were given as much time to eat as needed, and were asked to fill out surveys to rate the liking, familiarity, and boredom with the food. They were also asked to rate their hunger and craving before the food was presented and fifteen minutes after the taste tests ended.

The results remarkably showed that smaller portion sizes are capable of providing similar feelings of satisfaction as larger ones. Those given larger portions consumed 77% more food, amounting to 103 calories more, but they did not feel any appetite enhancing or stronger feelings of satiety than the group with the smaller portions. Overall these findings reflect the importance of portion size. While larger portions result in increased food intake, smaller portions may make you feel equally satisfied. The smaller portions can lead to a decline in hunger and desire that would help people limit their food intake. So, next time you are craving a snack food, remember that you can feel similarly satisfied with one handful as you would with two!
