AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- David Ash threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, the last a 36-yard strike to Marquise Goodwin with 2:24 left, to give Texas a 31-27 comeback victory over No. 15 Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night.

Complete Beavers coverage

The Longhorns (9-4) never led before Goodwin scored his second touchdown on a deep post pattern, just a play after Texas converted a fourth-and-1 play to keep its chances alive.

Storm Woods ran for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns for Oregon State (9-4). The Beavers left stunned after looking as though they would wrap up their first 10-win season since 2006.

The victory was a dose of much-needed good news for Texas after coming into the game under a cloud of questions following the suspensions of two players.

Emily Yoffe: Good afternoon. Wishing all of you a great 2013, and a bearable New Year's Eve (my least favorite holiday!)

Q. Social Network Relationship Entanglement: A few months ago I joined an online group of like-minded people where we often discuss personal relationship problems. I have found that griping about my husband to anonymous people online is a lot better than venting my frustrations at him. Lately my husband has also been really good at changing some of the behaviors that have always driven me up the wall, and now I know why. While using his laptop, I happened to notice him logged in as one of the members of my group! He created a fake persona and has seen every gripe I ever typed about him! I haven't confronted him on this, and to be honest it has been a convenient way to indirectly communicate my frustrations to him. So should I tell him I know who he is, quit the group, or just let this be?

A: I'm sure my husband would love me to follow your lead and post my complaints online instead of expressing them directly to him. Then he'd follow your husband's example of not discussing any of this with me. Where he'd differ is the part where he logs on and reads my nagging, then dedicates himself to meeting my standards of the perfect husband. Your situation sounds like a variation of that dreadful Pina Colada song. But I'd find your version more believable if it turned out your husband was remaking himself to please you in order to divert you from exploring the fact that most of his time online is spent looking for kinky sex partners. It's also possible that you haven't paid enough attention to the male poster on this site who complains that his hypercontrolling witch of a wife doesn't even appreciate when he makes the changes she wants. I suggest that, to get back to face-to-face communication, you tell your online audience that your husband has undergone a remarkable transformation and you're so moved by this that you're going to let him know how much his efforts have meant to you. Then do so, in person, including letting your husband know you know he's a member of your rant group.

Q. Old Mother: I am 40 years old and eight months pregnant. It is my first child after spending most of my life thinking I won't have any. I am happy to report it has been a generally comfortable pregnancy and my baby and I are healthy. The only discomfort I must endure on a regular basis is comments from various family members, friends, co-workers, and even total strangers. I've had so many people ask me if I've had IVF, or people assuming IVF and asking what the process was like. Although the baby was conceived the old-fashioned way I do not feel comfortable discussing my fertility with others. Had I actually gone through fertility treatments, it would have been something intensely personal and not something I'd announce to the world. Either way, I certainly don't feel like explaining to strangers, "Oh no, I actually became impregnated by having unprotected intercourse with my fertile husband." Many people ask me if there is anything wrong with my baby, or become offended and outraged I didn't terminate. My boss yesterday even remarked, "I don't know how you justify to yourself having a baby at your age," after ranting about a friend's daughter who was born with Down's syndrome after her mother gave birth at a later age. I'm sick and tired of justifying my pregnancy to others. How can I politely steer myself away from these questions?

A: Wow, you know a lot of dreadful people. I, too, had a baby at 40 (the regular way, not that anybody asked me) and I can't recall one person saying anything but how happy they were for me. Fortunately, in a few weeks the pregnancy questions and remarks will end, and you will have a beautiful baby. For now, just smile beatifically in a way only pregnant women can, and say in response to these idiot remarks, "Thank you for your good wishes." If after the birth this crowd keeps up their nasty commentary, stick with the non sequiturs and say, "Yes, I have blessed with a wonderful child, now please excuse me."

Q. I Don't Want Mother-in-Law's Money for Our Wedding: When we got engaged, my boyfriend and I agreed we didn't want anyone to pay for our wedding. Partly because I think, as a self-sufficient adult, I should pay for my own event?and secondly, because I know how people can be as soon as money is involved. He and I have both turned down his mother's offers to pay for various things multiple times. She keeps insisting and has firmly told us she will pay. No surprise?she's added 10 of her friends to our guest list. When my boyfriend asked who they were?a hint?she replied, "My friends." I'm not inviting any of my mother's friends, and this is a very small event?about 70 people without her friends. Frankly, I don't want people I barely know at my wedding, or my mother-in-law's money. Is there a kind way to settle this with someone who's absurdly headstrong? I imagine she will just put the money in a card anyway and be offended if we don't invite her friends, as she will still have ?paid? for some of the wedding.

A: Another in-law question, another time for the son to step up. No hints with this woman. Your fianc? should say, "Mom, we know our wedding is a big deal for you and you would like your friends there. But we are having a small ceremony we are paying for ourselves and we can't expand the guest list. But after we're married and back from the honeymoon, we would love to have a party at your house where we see your friends and celebrate." Then the subject is closed. Both of you learning to stand up to an "absurdly headstrong" woman will make the next several decades more pleasant.

Q. Relationships, and Coming Out: An ex from several years ago, now a good friend, recently came out to me as a transgender person. He has not undergone any of the transition, but has confided in me that he has always thought he was female, including when we were together. I am supportive of my friend. During our relationship, we planned on getting married and having children. We broke up due to an unrelated reason, and grew up a lot. We have recently talked about our relationship. I love him very much, but I am afraid of what may happen if we were to reconcile. I now have my own child, and I want to be married and have more subsequent biological children. What do I do?

A: If I understand, the question you're asking me is if you should pursue a romantic relationship with your male ex who is becoming a female ex. If he's going to make a transition, even if he doesn?t choose surgery right away, surely he's going to be on enough female hormones to render him infertile. You want more children, so that makes this a nonstarter. Unless you are bisexual, I don't understand how you will find yourself attracted to a transgendered lover who is now female. You can remain dear friends, but even if you "love" your ex, the time for an intimate relationship has passed.

Q. Boyfriend With Terrible Manners: My lovely boyfriend?cute, smart, warm, loving, devoted?has about the worst manners, especially at the table, that I have ever encountered in my life. He doesn't know how to hold a fork, he wraps his left arm protectively around his food and hovers his upper body over it, he uses his left hand to help food onto his fork or spoon, he slurps soup and spaghetti loudly and sloppily. I've tried to bring it up in lighthearted way, especially in the context of meeting my parents, and he doesn't get it. I do not want to insult someone I love, and by proxy his parents, but I couldn't in a million years bring him to a dinner party, a nice restaurant, a family gathering, basically anywhere outside of the confines of my apartment. The one time we had a full meal out people did stare and I've steered us into drinks or a movie rather than dinner ever since. I'm not just embarrassed, I'm also concerned for his reputation in his line of work and in his peer group. When he eats, he looks and behaves like he's at a Renaissance Fair. How do I address this with the man I love without hurting his feelings?

Jim Miller gets bloody UFC 155 win over Joe Lauzon

UFC 155 was headed towards becoming one of the least memorable UFC pay-per-view cards in recent history until Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller stepped in the cage. The lightweights delivered a late Fight of the Year candidate as Miller won 29-28 on all three judges' cards.

Miller opened up the fight with a bevy of punches, and opened a cut on Lauzon's face early. Lauzon's wooziness allowed Miller to lock a standing arm triangle. Lauzon was able to slip out of the choke, but when he emerged, his face was covered in blood.

[Complete UFC 155 recap: Cain Velasquez mauls Junior dos Santos]

Though Miller managed better attacks and wasn't bleeding as badly as Lauzon, he still found himself in trouble late in the third round. Lauzon dove onto Miller's legs, and attempted a leg lock submission. If there wasn't so much blood covering their bodies and the canvas, Lauzon might have pulled out the win.

Lauzon told Yahoo! Sports after the fight that he required 40 stitches for the cuts sustained during the fight.

Miller was impressed by Lauzon's toughness.

?Joe Lauzon is a tough kid. I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to," Miller said after the fight. "That?s how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

Resolution on sharing family history ? more 'kindling,' less 'swamping'

Any genealogist will tell you that one of the most rewarding things that can happen is for one of your family members to show an interest in your shared ancestry.

Before my niece, Stephanie Taylor, married Andrew Zimmerman, she told me that she would like to have as a wedding gift a one-page pedigree chart for each of them that could be framed and hung on their wall.

I was so touched to have her make this request, and arranged to have the framed charts compiled, wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree this year at my sister?s house to surprise the young couple.

Did I mention that Stephanie and Andy were married in October? That?s October ? last year.

Now that I?ve done the project, framed it and actually given it to the young couple, you can guess what my message for the new year is about sharing family history:

Don?t wait.

Whether your genealogy is in a computer or handwritten on sheets of paper, it?s not a big deal to make copies and put them in a simple three-ring binder for the intended relative. This makes updating easy because you can just give out updated pages as they are ready.

But don?t overlook the value ? and fun ? in sharing just a page of your pedigree.

In my early days of genealogical research, I often overwhelmed my dad and other relatives by trying to communicate everything I?d found about the family all at once.

What works better, of course, is sharing information on your heritage in manageable bites. My uncle Roddy Moore once asked for information on our Bennetts, as he and my dad and their siblings were very close to their Bennett grandparents, who were in fact, both Bennetts. I focused on what he wanted to know.

What I realized while doing the recent project for my niece is that a one-page pedigree chart, even if it reaches back only three generations, can represent a good amount of heritage. Moreover, confining the information to one page communicates in a simple way that can be understood.

The pedigree chart for my niece encompasses all eight of her great-grandparents ? Taylor, Willis, Marble, Osberg, Moore, Bennett, Steeves and Roberts. The Osbergs were from Sweden, and the early Steeves ancestors from Wurtemburg, Germany.

Her husband?s great-grandparents have surnames Zimmerman, Andrews, Atkinson, Soper, Higgins, Farmer, Hanson and Strout. Zimmerman is a German name. (Broadway and film star Ethel Merman was born Ethel Agnes Zimmerman.)

I printed off the pedigree charts on my Family Treemaker program and framed them. I also printed off an extra copy of each one for Stephanie and Andy?s parents: Scott and Maureen (Moore) Taylor and Ralph and Joyce (Higgins) Zimmerman.

When I find new information to add to the charts, or if Stephanie and Andy learn new things from their families, I can easily print off updated charts for them to use to replace the ones hanging on their wall.

Now that I?ve completed these first one-page projects, I can think of other relatives who would appreciate having the same thing for their home, even one family that already has a notebook I did with several charts in it.

After 35 years of research, all it took was one special niece to help me think in terms of kindling the family?s interest in genealogy, rather than swamping them with information.

Thanks, Stephanie Taylor Zimmerman.

The national anthem is a difficult song to sing, requiring a range of voice I would never expect in youngsters.

So it is a pleasure to offer an ?A-plus? to three young ladies, approximately the age of fifth-graders, who gave their best during the Veterans Day dedication of the Bangor World War II Memorial at Cole Land Transportation Museum.

Emily Mock, Rachael Kiah and Ceci Doering stood up on the bench where they had been sitting and treated some 200 in attendance to one wonderful performance of ?The Star-Spangled Banner.?

It was more than a treat ? it was a blessing. It also was a worthy tribute to the memory of 112 Bangor veterans killed during World War II.

New Vision African Hair Salon (Deptford, London, by joya1)

IF YOU LOVE YOUR HAIR DONT GO HERE!!!!
DAVID KAPEL HAIR REVIEW

1) I bought a voucher off of groupon for a choice of a brazilian keratin treatment, spanish straightening treatment, korean kee mee straightening treatment or japanese yuko straightening treatment.

2) I had long hair mid back length, coloured and which i had been straightening using the brazilian keratin and also straightening irons occasionally. Ends needed cutting but overall in pretty good condition considering it was coloured and straightened often.

3) I left the salon with COMPLETELY DAMAGED, OVERPROCESSED hair!!!! I ended up having to cut off at least 5 to 6 inches or more when i had planned on maintaing length and getting just 1 or 2 inches off that day! Didnt get it cut at this salon though I ran out when I saw the damage and went to a more trustwrothy salon.(which wont be named because im focusing on david kapel right now!)

4) I had gone in with hair that was wavy and my main concern was to cut down styling time and have straighter roots. I had planned to go for the japanese treatment on just my roots as I dont really like all my hair being straight just the roots but the hairdresser advised the spanish treatment and said it could be put through all my hair and wouldnt cause damage despite my hair being coloured while the japanese would. (I SHOULD NEVER HAVE TRUSTED HER!) not only did it damage my ends, it damaged my roots my hair is damaged so severely now, and after she washed out the treatment it was faling out in chunks, it was all crinkled up from being fried, and it felt spongy and sticky and was obviously overprocessed. I mentioned this to the woman and she said just 2 inches needed cutting off and it would be fine. (lies!) She denied that it was damaged and wouldnt listen to me. She kept viciously combing it and I just kept watching chunks of hair breaking off and falling to the floor. Im not sure if shes ignorant and didnt want to admit her mistake, or if she really knows that little about hair that she couldnt see it was overprocessed and damaged.
Please please please STAY AWAY FROM THIS SALON! I realise now it wasnt worth trying to save money by getting a discounted treatment, in the end I spent more buying deep conditioners and products in attempts to salvage what was left of my hair than i would have if I'd just gone to a good salon and gotten a good brazilian keratin treatment done. Id even rather have frizzy hair right now than what I've got, at least it would be long and healthy!!! I hope this helps at least one person from making the same mistake as me and if you have any more questions or want to see photos of the damage after and what my hair looked like before just message me(if thats possible on here?)?

Also, the treatment has made it take TWICE AS LONG TO STYLE MY HAIR. and i still have to straighten it! :( It was the worst mistake I made in my life.

Weekend Roundup: Apple iPad 5, Google X Phone, Windows 8 adoption rate & an unlimited data plan with a kick

Followup of iPad 4 lined up for Q1 2013 launch

Not a week goes by without the mention of a rumour about a new Apple iPad. This week brought about rumours of an iPad 5 which would be the successor of the current iPad (fourth generation). It is said to be ?inspired? by the iPad Mini, which itself is based on the iPad 2 (yes we know, it starts to get confusing). A Japanese website even mentions that the tablet will be introduced in March 2013. Should that be true, it would mean that three 9.7in iPad models (plus the iPad mini) would have been released in less than one year, an upgrade cycle that will test the nerves (and the pockets) of even the staunchest Apple aficionados. This reminds me of a cartoon by the Oatmeal about?what it?s like to own an Apple product. As for improvements, one has to wonder what a new tablet will offer other than a thinner chassis, a processor swap and a camera upgrade. But Apple doesn?t have the choice. The Samsung-built Nexus 10 massively upped the ante by combining some exceptional hardware with a more than decent price tag.

Google preparing a Nexus 4 successor called X Phone?

Guess what? Motorola Mobility may finally bring out its first major smartphone following its acquisition by Google in August 2011. All the recent flagship Motorola smartphones, the Razr i or the Razr Maxx, were mere evolutions of the original Razr but a brand new handset shrouded in secrecy and rumoured to be called the X Phone may well put Motorola back in the high-end smartphone race, one dominated by Samsung and its Galaxy series. The phone is said to be launched next year and it will be interesting to see how it will be positioned vis-?-vis the existing LG Nexus 4 and how strategic partners like Samsung, Sony and LG will stomach such a launch especially after the triple whammy that was the Nexus 7, the Nexus 4 and the Nexus 10. My hunch is that the X Phone will be the Nexus 5, one which will take the iPhone 5S head on (as well as the Samsung Galaxy S4). The Nexus 4 provides with a formidable platform on which to build; possible improvements include a higher resolution, much better camera features, premium materials, bigger internal storage and a brand new version of Android, v5.0 AKA Key Lime Pie.

Windows 8 adoption rate slower than Vista?

?Lies, damned lies and statistics?, an expression popularized by celebrated American author Mark Twain comes to mind when reading an article by one of our peers from Computerworld who found out that Windows 8 accounts for only 1.6 per cent of online usage share by 22 December while Vista accounted for 2.2 per cent of online usage share by the same period of time when it launched back in 2007. There are two points worth noting; firstly, since the launch of Vista, the number of computers running Windows has almost doubled to around 1.5 billion, which means that in absolute terms, Windows 8 installations surpass Windows Vista. Then there?s the fact that NetMarketshare gathers its data ?from the browsers of site visitors? to its ?exclusive on-demand network of live stats customers?. Which means that results can sometimes be skewed; for example NetMarketshare reports that Apple iOS? marketshare of mobiles and tablets is more than twice that of Android when in reality, both platforms are likely to be much closer.

AYCE data plan + tethering + great price = stellar offer

I rarely list a deal in the weekend roundup but this one is too good not enough to be mentioned again. Virgin Mobile with Three are the only two mobile phone operators to offer unlimited data allowance and tethering at any price (although technically T-Mobile offers tethering as an add-on for its full Monty for the same rate as its PAYG mobile broadband which is ?15 per month). But Virgin Mobile?s SIM-only AYCE+T plan costs ?12 per month on a 30-day contract, less than half Three?s cheapest all-you-can-eat data plan that includes tethering. What this means is that in theory, you could pair that that SIM with a low cost Android smartphone (like the ?49.95 Motorola Motosmart) and get a versatile hotspot that can do much more than a bog-standard Mi-fi device for the same price. Oh and you get unlimited texts and 150 minutes. Virgin Mobile piggybacks on EE?s network, which should ensure optimum mobile coverage nationwide.

Sales Cycles ? Small Business Marketing

Many of my small business marketing peeps never take the time to really look at and consider sales cycles in their marketing efforts. Today?s post is going to be very important and worth taking the time to read!

Small Business Marketing - Sales Cycles and When Will They BuyThink of it this way, when you are shopping for anything, you have a process you go through that starts with the idea and ends with the purchase. If it is a tiny item like a candy bar, the thought and the purchasing may be very close. If it is a large item or something you need for your business or to help improve your life, the timeline may be considerably longer, with more research involved.

Thinking of buying ? So you are sitting at your desk and contemplating lunch when suddenly you see an ad for item, OR you are at an event and a speaker talks about something that is new to you and you think, ?hmmm that might work for my business?, OR you are talking with a friend and they tell you about this great new product or service they are using. All of these are ways that the IDEA of buying something can come into your head.

Early research ? Now you know this thing exists and if someone doesn?t sell you that minute on it, you are probably going to do some research on the topic.

I heard a great example somewhere about guinea pigs. People rarely buy guinea pigs spontaneously (thank goodness). They see them (or more likely their kids see them), then the parents research how much care and feeding they take, then the kids beg for a while and finally a pig is purchased.

There are multiple places in this research phase that you could attract the attention of researchers, have a GP for Dummies Book, offer a free guide to how to pick a long living GP, have a video tutorial about the care and cleaning of a cage. All of these things will get them into your sales pipeline IF you capture their data by asking for their email address and name.

Middle research ? Okay, the initial discovery had been done and now your customer is moving onto serious research. In this case lets look at a bride. She has become engaged, done some early dreaming about her wedding, but now the rubber hits the road and she needs to find out pricing and availability of venues, where to get her gown and all the other things a bride has to do.

As a vendor in the wedding space, you would want to be on this short list. What if, during early research you had offered something like a free wedding checklist that she could use to make sure everything gets done and have continued to send tips her way for the last couple of months? Don?t you think your company will be on that short list?

Buying ? The research is done and they are ready to buy. This is the sad little place that I see too many of my peeps miss the mark. They are all gung ho up in the research phase and actually convince someone of the value of buying whatever they sell, but then peter out and functionally make the sale for whoever comes along next and talks about it. You HAVE to be in constant contact at this point to make the sale!

The Bad News About Sales Cycles

I have bad news, most of my clients come to me all bright eyed and bushy tailed saying that they only want to target people who are 5 minutes away from buying their product or service. That is a truly admirable goal and sometimes possible by targeting buying keywords in your organic or paid online marketing, but mostly people want to buy from someone they know, like and trust.

Let?s say a customer is looking for social media marketing services and somewhere early in their search they happen along my site. They sign up for my mailing list and we send them great information for weeks or months about how to do their social media, what to look for, etc. By the time they are ready to buy they ?know? me. They have seen my videos, they have read my emails, I have helped them to understand what they need to do and what kind of company they need to look for (miraculously close to what our company does) and so their buying decision becomes no decision, OF COURSE they hire us because we are the only real choice.

How To Do Sales Cycle Marketing

So you are thinking, ?bloody hell?, how am I going to get all these people from thinking about buying to finally picking up the phone to call with a sale. You need to have a database that has the capability of:

  • Having a web form to collect the suspect?s email address and name
  • Have a series of ?drip emails? (also called auto responders) that keep you in the front of their thoughts
  • A way to start separating the wheat from the chaff into prospects by checking which links they click in the emails to see where they are in the sales cycle
  • The ability to delegate some of these tasks (I have a WONDERFUL executive assistant who makes most of my calls for me, you NEED to have the best person for the job getting the task to perform)
  • Continuous, gentle reminders along the way to buy from you (these do not have to scream buy now, buy now, but why miss a sale because someone doesn?t know you are selling)

Sales Cycle Software Recommendation

If you are down this far, you are obviously interested in growing your business and making more money. Please, please, please stick with me for one more minute and find out how to stop thinking about doing something and really take action?

The ONLY way to accomplish all these tasks is by using some kind of advanced database (while Constant Contact or Mail Chimp will work early on, they fall apart at the place where you really start tracking and selling?they are a marketing tool, not a sales tool).

We recommend InfusionSoft for this kind of thing (we use them and they sponsor our site ? first sponsor we have allowed in over 12 years ? we love them that much!) Their software performs all of these functions AND they have training to make sure you know how to use it! Find out more about Lifecycle Marketing and InfusionSoft?

Beijing ? China Requiring People To Visit Their Aged Parents

Beijing - Visit your parents. That?s an order.

So says China, whose national legislature on Friday amended its law on the elderly to require that adult children visit their aged parents ?often? ? or risk being sued by them.

The amendment does not specify how frequently such visits should occur.

State media say the new clause will allow elderly parents who feel neglected by their children to take them to court.

A rapidly developing China is facing increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population. Three decades of market reforms have accelerated the breakup of the traditional extended family in China, and there are few affordable alternatives, such as retirement or care homes, for the elderly or others unable to live on their own.

Central African Republic troops fight back

The Central African Republic troops are battling to re-capture a rebel-held city, officials say. Source: AAP

GOVERNMENT soldiers in the Central African Republic are battling to re-capture a rebel-held city, a military official says, despite regional efforts to seek a peaceful end to the growing crisis.

The military official said the fighting in Bambari, which rebels from the Seleka coalition seized on Sunday, was "especially violent", and a humanitarian source said witnesses some 60 kilometres away could hear detonations and heavy weapons fire for several hours.

The new violence came the same day as the Central African Republic's neighbours took steps to tackle the crisis in the chronically unstable country, where rebels have advanced towards the capital Bangui, stoking local and international alarm.

Foreign ministers in the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) announced late on Friday that more troops of the Central African Multinational Force (FOMAC) would be sent to the country.

"Five hundred and sixty men are already on the ground, and we agreed to a request by the ECCAS general secretariat to increase their numbers and allow them to accomplish their mission as a rapid deployment force", as Seleka rebels threaten the capital, Chad's Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat said after a meeting in the Gabonese capital Libreville, which is seen as a potential venue for peace talks.

The international force is "to deploy so Bangui and all cities that have not been captured (by the rebels) so far cannot be targeted by the rebels", added Gabon's Foreign Minister Emmanuel Issoze Ngondet.

ECCAS deputy secretary general Guy-Pierre Garcia said earlier that the rebels and the Central African government had agreed to unconditional talks.

"The goal is to get to negotiations (between the government and the rebels) by January 10," a source in the Central African Multinational Force said.

Central African (CAR) President Francois Bozize's appeals for help from former colonial power France and from the United States have fallen on deaf ears.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said on Friday that France had no intention of getting involved in the crisis, and would only intervene to protect its own nationals there.

The French defence ministry said late on Friday that 150 troops had arrived in Bangui from Libreville as a "precautionary measure" to protect French and other European citizens.

Fears about the deteriorating security situation led Washington to evacuate its embassy in Bangui and the United Nations to pull out staff.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Friday that it too had evacuated some workers, although it stressed it would continue to provide aid to the growing number of displaced people.

A diplomatic team from FOMAC has begun talks with authorities in Bangui and sent a delegation to the rebel-held strategic town of Ndele in the north to meet members of the rebel coalition Seleka, which launched its offensive on December 10.

The UN has demanded rebels halt their offensive, and urged Bozize's government to ensure the safety of civilians amid fears of a breakdown in law and order in the country.

A coalition of three rebel movements known as Seleka - or the "alliance" in the Sango language - has taken a string of towns, including four regional capitals, among them the garrison town and key diamond mining hub of Birao.

The coalition wants the government to fulfil the terms of peace pacts signed in 2007 and 2001, providing for disarmament and social reintegration, including pay.

Bozize took power in a 2003 coup and has twice been elected into office.

In 2006, France, which supported Bozize in his rise to power, had lent logistical help and air support to fight off rebels.

While Seleka says it has no plans to move on the capital, a statement last week announcing it had suspended its advance was followed within a day by news of further rebel victories.

RolePlayGateway?

Looking to see if anyone is interested in a OnexOne roleplay set into the future. I'm looking for someone who is creative enough to keep the RP alive and is a more advanced writer. Looking for a female character.

Here's a short little overview:

New Tokyo, Japan || Year 2113

Throughout the years Japan has managed to brutally shape itself into the country it is today, its history littered with blood, tears, and deceptions that lay buried underneath the rubble of old cities, old lives, and even older traditions. Technology advances and the people along with it, governments fall and new powers take over. Humans are constantly in motion, adapting without realizing they?ve lost the control over their own lives. Japan was no different than the rest. It wasn?t until after the third great war of 2062 that Japan came cracking down on its citizens, empowering police forces with more power than was deserved- power that easily corrupted and took over. Things changed, more laws were passed and the power to the people became almost nonexistent. A.W.O [Armortech Warfare Organization] was the economic powerhouse that fixed Japan from its slump after the war. A.W.O became law. And with new laws, came law breakers.

The first anti-A.W.O group was known as The Resistance. In the beginning they had been made up of a small group of maybe 30 individuals who were infamous for their violent acts of protests, which often included flooding the streets with riots, vandalism, and other small scale crimes that A.W.O took with a grain of salt. The Resistance was nothing but a band of thugs at first, they were careless, stupid, and nothing that A.W.O officers couldn't handle. The Resistance and its members had slowly begun to get picked off one by one, A.W.O was written all over the 'mysterious' deaths. They would have been completely wiped out if it wasn't for their sudden change in leadership. Akito Higurashi, Codename: Ocean. The rumors were that he had transferred from The Underground, an elite group that was so low profile that it was almost a myth.

In a matter of months, Ocean became one of the most infamous names known to A.W.O - It was no suprise that all information on him was hidden from the public and stored away in a document labled 'Top Secret'. He became the most wanted man in all of Japan, but nobody knew who he was.

Not yet.

So basically, the plot of the entire story will be that Ocean will be captured and held in an A.W.O holding facility until further questioning. Prior to his capture, an A.W.O special operative will be diagnosed with a disease that has a 80% rate of being fatal and killing the patient within months of being diagnosed. This special operative will then kind of go over the deep end and eventually let Ocean free as long as he promises to take her with him because she wants to live the rest of her life breaking the rules since she has always been one to follow them. Then their adventure begins and they go through all sorts of crazy obstacles and most likely will turn into a romance.

Here is another overview of the events that took place before Ocean's capture:

Ocean (My Character)

Neon signs flickered on and off in a struggle to stay alive, their dim light being the only source of illumination in the dilapidated and dark alley way. An overcast of thick fog hung over the tops of the nearly abandoned buildings, the smoke seeming to crawl down the sides of the old apartments and motels, until it touched the streets where it lingered like a ghost. In an almost dead part of town, four armor clad shadows stood near the outskirts of an apartment, so still that they could have be mistaken for statues if it weren?t for the faint rise and fall of their chests and the shift of lids over eyes that scanned every crack and crevice on the building in front of them.

They were waiting, waiting for a sign that what they have been looking for was in that building, waiting for a movement- a pulse. White noise changed to static in the headphones they all wore before a voice broke through, alerting them to the task at hand.

?He?s there.?

Not one hesitated as they sprung into action, years of training making them the fastest and the most battle ready. Feet shuffled and the sound of metal armor scraping against itself could be heard against the silence of the night, no doubt alerting the target inside. The head of command laid one swift kick to the apartment door, the hinges giving way at the powerful blow. They stormed in with a fury, weapons in hand and locked on the target that sat smirking almost idly on a ripped and torn couch at the corner of the room.

Weapons clicked into place. ?Target 5470D, confirmed.?

The A.W.O Operative (Female Character)

There was barely a sound in the polished office, save for the ocasional click of a pen and the rustling of paperwork. The restless silence hung down like lead, but it was soon interrupted by quick steps in the hallway just outside, and a young woman pushing through the heavy oak doors into the large room. Dressed in regulation military fatigues for respite, a faint blue light glowed through her white tank top all along her spine.

"First Lieutenant _____." she saluted briefly, "You wanted to see me, Major General, sir?"

"At ease." the man at the desk rolled his eyes at the feigned politeness, remaining slouched in his desk chair, staring over at the young woman pensively, "They're making you Captain, kiddo," he finally stated, "That stunt you pulled, managing to find Ocean, impressed them to the shits."

"I didn't do anything," the young woman grumbled, shoving her hands into the pockets of her cameo pockets and shrugging her shoulders absently, "Bain's unit captured him."

The General snorted, "Bain couldn't find his hand at the end of his arm, let alone a needle in a haystack."

The young woman shrugged again, earning herself a glare from the older man, "Look, kid, point is, you're going to shut up, get over your issues, work with a team, and for god's sake, you'll try to smile when they hand you your new insignia."

A twitch appeared at the corner of the newly appointed Captain's mouth, and her lips curled into a semblance of a grin, looking more like she was baring her teeth than anything else.

"Is that all, sir?" she huffed.

"Yea," the General sighed, "Well, no. Your doc's here."

The young woman narrowed her eyes, but did not protest (verbally anyway) and merely watched with undisguised hostility as a man in a white lab coat joined them in the office.

It really was too bad, she briefly thought, as she might have liked the man, if he didn't have the nasty habit of sticking sharp objects into her automail of a spinal chord with alarming frequency.

"I'm not due for a fitting for another two weeks," she stated suspiciously.
The two men shared uncomfortable glances, and the doctor finally broke the newfound silence, clearing his throat and gesturing for the young woman to have a seat. She shook her head, causing a grimace to stretch the young doctor's lips.

"Well, you see miss..." he began, interrupted at once by a lifted palm, "/Captain/," the girl rectified with a raised eyebrow, daring him to continue.

"Very well, Captain, I've had time to look over your scans from last week, and I'm afraid I have some bad news..."

The rest of the speech seemed drowned out by the blood rushing through the Captain's ears. She heard words like fatal, terminal, organ failure, but they meant nothing to her. Death? Was this rat of a man was rambling on about now? She was going to die? Well, of course, she had always expected to die. But certainly not now. Certainly not like this. Certainly not slowly and agonizingly for no good cause at all.

Through the haze, she caught on the gist of the problem: the surgery from two years prior had been an innovation. She had been lucky enough to get out of it on her own two feet. Her spinal chord had been so badly damaged, that the surgeons had been forced to either give up, or attempt a graft.

She had been given the spinal chord of a dead comrade, to replace the nerves endings crushed beneath the broken bones. A series of automail pieces running on isotopic technology had served as replacement for the bone themselves.

And now, it appeared that the graft was taking over her own nervous system. It certainly explained the so-called 'antibiotics' she had been forced to ingest daily. Those, she now learned, had held back the graft's progress, but her body and its foreign object had both grown accustomed and impervious to them, building a high tolerance for the now-useless medicine.

The graft would slowly gain control over her entire body, and, combined with an unaccesible (and therefore unrepairable) leak in her automail, she was guaranteed a drawn-out and painful death, poisoned by the very thing that had saved her life.

Well, drawn out was relative. Three months, the doctor said. A few more if she came to the hospital with them. A few less if she stubbornly continued to out-do herself. They could make it painless for her, they said. Medication and painkillers and a soft bed. No more work. She was promoted. She could enjoy the raise, yelling at new recruits and generally taking things easy.

It all felt a bit too much like pity to her. Painless? Sit behind a desk? The young women clenched her fists as she nodded blindly, no longer listening. Screw that. She was going down with a fight, on the field, out there, doing... doing something, though she didn't quite know what.

She'd figure it out.

She had three months.

So yeah! If you are interested please let me know.
Also, I'm really new to this site so I am still getting used to how everything works.

Suzuki Done with Selling Cars in the USA

American Suzuki Motor Corporation is filing for bankruptcy in the USA and will no longer sell automobiles in the 48 contiguous states (all but Alaska and Hawaii). The company is refocusing its efforts on motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and watercraft, per recently released information from the company. Some of the language of his message relates to other aspects of the automotive industry; we?ll make a few references to national auto transport.

Motorbike & Motorcycles Getting More Attention

ASMC?s Chairman, Takashi Iwatsuki, announced this new move, addressing himself directly to Suzuki motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, and watercraft customers. The primary focus of his statement is that there will be no interruption in business and no changes ? other than higher prioritization ? for the non-automobile branches of the company. Suzuki will also continue to market itself widely via motorbike and motorcycle racing ? a continuation of its current practices. As Suzuki cars and trucks become more limited, wise businesspeople will look into transporting the car from state to state to deliver it to the best possible markets for sale.

Over 100 Years of Business

Suzuki has been in business since 1909. Its first motorcycles were manufactured in the 50s, in which it released the Diamond Free (1953), which had the basic look and feel of a bicycle, and the Colleda COX (1955), which had the style and structural integrity we tend to associate with the modern motorcycle. Antiques such as these require special care. When looking at moving a treasured motorcycle or
understanding how to transport across country, it?s important to find a reliable firm.

Fundraising

Suzuki sponsors a number of professional racers, including Josh Hill, who is new to the lineup in 2013. The company also builds corporate giving into its relationship with sponsored riders. In November 2012 Chris Ulrich raised over $6000 in a fundraiser: he did so by taking 71 people each for a 6.9 mile ride at Fontana, California?s Auto Club Speedway. Fundraising is a good way to give.

Expenses Just Too High in the United States

According to Iwatsuki, Suzuki decided to shut down American automobile sales due to flagging volume, a low model quantity, and difficulties specific to operation in the United States ? the general expenses of operation in a highly competitive economic climate and the necessity of complying with strict laws and codes. The issue of expense also relates to acquiring quality, online quotes, which can significantly decrease costs.

Current drivers of Suzuki automobiles will not be left out in the cold, according to the release. Cars currently with dealers in the United States are still available for sale, and Suzuki hopes to maintain its relationship with these customers throughout their ownership of a Suzuki vehicle.

We Still Ship in the United States

We are also a company that cares about maintaining a healthy relationship with our customers. We get you the best prices in the business via competitive pricing from some of the United States? largest and most well respected companies. Monti says will lead centrists in Italian vote

ROME (Reuters) - Outgoing Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Friday that he would lead a coalition of centrist parties who support his European and reform-minded agenda in the parliamentary election in just two months time.

The announcement clarifies Monti's involvement in the upcoming vote, after he said on Sunday that he may be willing to seek a second term if a credible political force backed his reform agenda.

"The traditional left-right split has historic and symbolic value" for the country, but "it does not highlight the real alliance that Italy needs - one that focuses on Europe and reforms," Monti said after a meeting with centrist politicians.

He said he was willing to accept "being named as leader of the coalition".

Monti, whose status as Senator for life means he does not have to stand for election to parliament himself, said that the formation could win a "significant result" in the election, scheduled for February 24-25.

56% of female university students get drunk in record time, Spanish study suggests

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Researchers from the HealthyFit group at the University of Vigo have studied university students' lifestyles; their analysis, which includes alcohol and illegal drug consumption habits, sport and food, concludes that most students indulge in unhealthy behaviour. One of the main results of the study points to the high consumption of alcohol.

"The amount drunk per unit of time is higher among women. In other words, even though male students drink more often, females do so more intensively in shorter periods of time, which is known as binge drinking," explained Jos? M? Cancela Carral, co-author of the study published by the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Researchers randomly selected 985 students from different degree courses and in different years at the University of Vigo.

Of the females interviewed, 51.2% lead a sedentary lifestyle, while the percentage in males is 41.7%. When analysing students who maintain an appropriate level of physical activity, 38.6% of males do physical exercise, as opposed to only 20.9% of women.

"We were also surprised by the high consumption of illegal drugs among university students -- 44.9% of men and 30.9% of women -- which we understand could lead to significant future health problems, mainly related to the nervous system," underlined the researcher.

Anomalous attitudes to food were more evident among women (16.6%), although also present among men (8.8%). "However, the statistical analysis showed that this parameter depended on the degree the student was studying for," added Cancela. Such attitudes were much more common among those studying degrees related to education (19.2%) than among those studying courses related to health (6.3%).

Health network

Spanish universities set up a Healthy University Network in 2008, a project for healthy living for universities from all over Spain, the Spanish University Rectors' Association, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and some regional public health entities.

In the researcher's opinion, at many universities this network was nothing more than "a simple first step to get on the list and nothing else"; hence transversal content should be implemented in study plans related to food, physical exercise and healthy habits.

"In the light of the results, training and information courses are required in these areas, together with healthy leisure -- not just sports facilities -- to set up university guidance services for a healthy student lifestyle," concludes Cancela.

Genetic predisposition

A recent study published in the PNAS journal argues that the gene called RASGRF2 could be related to a predisposition to getting drunk.

According to scientists, this gene regulates the predisposition to drink excessive amounts of alcohol as it influences mesolimbic dopamine neuron activity, which is one of the ways dopamine is taken from one region of the brain to another.

Gunter Schumann, one of the main authors of the study, explained that even though we should not consider said gene to be the main cause -- as there are many environmental factors and other genes involved -- the study thereof helps to explain why some people are more vulnerable to alcohol than others.

Malloy Nominates Andrew McDonald To State Supreme Court ...

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has nominated Andrew McDonald, his chief legal counsel, to the state Supreme Court.

?McDonald will replace Justice Lubbie Harper, Jr., who reached the mandatory age of retirement for state judges last month.? When confirmed, he will serve as the first openly gay appellate jurist in Connecticut?s history,? the governor?s office said in a release Thursday morning.

Additionally, he served as the director of legal affairs and corporation counsel for the City of Stamford from 1999 to 2002, when Governor Malloy served as mayor of the city.? He currently serves as general counsel to the Office of the Governor for the State of Connecticut.

?Having had the opportunity to work alongside Andrew McDonald in several capacities over the years, including both as a lawyer and as a public servant, I am convinced that he will be an excellent addition to our state?s highest court and will serve the people of Connecticut well when he is confirmed to the bench,? Governor Malloy said.? ?In each of the roles he has served, Andrew has proven to have an exceptional ability to understand, analyze, research and evaluate legal issues.? He has undertaken his legal work with a focus on giving back extensively to his community and a commitment to the equal rights of all residents.? He will be an exceptional justice on the Connecticut Supreme Court.?

?I?m immensely grateful to the governor for the honor he has shown me through this nomination,? McDonald said.? ?Honoring the law and serving the people of this state have been the focus of my professional life, and I will be humbled by the opportunity to continue to do both on the Supreme Court if confirmed by the General Assembly.?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Friday approved a $60.4 billion aid package to pay for reconstruction costs from Superstorm Sandy, which ravaged mid-Atlantic and northeastern states, after defeating Republican efforts to trim the bill's cost.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid urged the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to quickly take up the bill, which includes $12 billion to repair and strengthen the region's transportation system against future storms.

"There is no time to waste," Reid said.

Both chambers have to agreed on a package by January 2, when the current term of Congress is expected to end, or restart the process of crafting legislation in 2013. The Senate approved the bill 62-32, with most Republicans voting no.

"We beat back all of the crippling amendments," said Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York, which suffered the largest monetary damage in the storm.

"The century-old tradition of different parts of the country rallying to help those who are beleaguered because of difficult natural disasters continues," Schumer said.

The bill's chances in the next few days could depend on whether President Barack Obama and congressional leaders reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts set to begin taking effect in the new year.

House Republican leaders have not yet decided whether to take up the Senate bill, a Republican aide said.

The bill also provides $17 billion in Community Development Block Grants to help rebuild homes, schools, hospitals and other buildings destroyed by the late October storm, help small businesses and improve the power infrastructure.

Senate Republicans complained the $60.4 billion reconstruction package requested by Obama is more than the annual budgets for the departments of Interior, Labor, Treasury and Transportation combined.

HOUSE ACTION UNCLEAR

Senator Dan Coats, an Indiana Republican, offered an alternative that would have provided $23.8 billion in funding to help victims of the storm through the end of March and give Congress time to determine additional needs.

"Let me just say, we simply are allowing three months for the Congress of the United States, the representatives of the taxpayers' dollars, to assess, document and justify additional expenditures that go beyond emergency needs," Coats said just before his amendment was defeated.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, a Republican from Kentucky, would still prefer to pass a stop-gap bill to meet immediate needs and wait to do another package after better estimates come in, a committee aide said.

The Congressional Budget Office has estimated about $8.97 billion of the Senate bill would be spent in 2013, with another $12.66 billion spent in 2014 and $11.59 billion spent in 2015.

The Senate bill is considerably less than the $82 billion in aid requested by New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the states that bore the brunt of damage from the storm.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, was in Washington this month, lobbying lawmakers for the larger amount.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief fund now has less than $5 billion available.

The damage to New York and New Jersey coastal areas was on a scale not seen since Hurricane Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast and flooded New Orleans in 2005. Two weeks after that storm hit, Congress approved $62.3 billion in emergency appropriations.

Lawmakers passed numerous subsequent emergency funding requests over several years to cover damages from Katrina, which topped $100 billion. A number of Gulf State Republicans supported the Sandy relief bill.

Republicans were successful in requiring offsetting spending cuts for $3.4 billion in mitigation work to prevent future disasters. Some Democrats said this would set a precedent for future disaster aid bills.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels stepped up their siege of a military base in north of the country Friday as government warplanes bombed surrounding areas to support the defenders, activists said.

The fighting around Mannagh airbase near the Turkish border came as foreign ministry officials in Ankara said two Syrian air force generals had defected and crossed the border.

Rebels have been advancing in different areas in northern Syria, capturing several bases in and around the embattled city of Aleppo in recent weeks.

"The fighting did not stop all night around Mannagh airport," said Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed. He added that Syrian military warplanes bombed rebel positions around the camp in an attempt to take the pressure off the base.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels reached the edge of the air base late Thursday and that heavy fighting continued into Friday.

The Observatory and Saeed also reported heavy clashes between troops and rebels in an around the Palestinian refugee camp of Handarat in Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial center, which opposition fighters have been trying for six months to capture.

Meanwhile, Russia's foreign minister said Moscow has proposed talks with the main Syrian opposition coalition, even though it had previously criticized Western countries for recognizing the group.

Sergey Lavrov told reporters that Russia has contacted the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces through the Russian Embassy in Egypt and "we expressed readiness to conduct a meeting" with coalition leader Mouaz al-Khatib.

The opposition leader al-Khatib quickly delivered an apparent snub: "If we don't represent the Syrian people why is he inviting us?" He called on Russia to demand that President Bashar Assad step down, "a main condition in any negotiations."

"The Syrian people haven't heard one fair word from Russia to the Syrian people, especially to the children, innocent people and civilians who are killed every day with Russian weapons," al-Khatib said in an interview with Al-Jazeera TV.

Russia has been one of Assad's strongest supporters and used its veto right alongside China at the U.N. Security Council to protect its old ally from international sanctions.

It has increasingly sought to distance itself from the Syrian strongman with top Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, making comments that suggest Russia is resigned to Assad losing power.

However, Russia continues to oppose calls for Assad's ouster, and has criticized Western countries for recognizing the opposition coalition, formed in November, as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people. Moscow says this runs counter to agreements seeking to promote political transition in Syria.

In Beirut, airport officials said the U.N. envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi left Lebanon to Dubai on his way to Moscow where is expected to discuss the Syria civil war with Russian officials later this week.

In Turkey, foreign ministry officials said Friday that the two defecting generals were "regional Syrian Air Force commanders" and are now in a camp where army defectors stay in the country.

They refused to give the generals' identities or say how they escaped from Syria. They spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to talk to the press.

The defection comes days after the commander of Syria's military police Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Jassem al-Shallal defected to Turkey. Al-Shallal is among the most senior members of Assad's military to defect.

Dozens of Syrian generals have defected since the country's crisis began in March 2011.

In other parts of the country, the Observatory reported fighting and shelling in areas including some neighborhoods of the capital Damascus, its suburbs, the central province of Hama and Homs and the region of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Observatory reported heavy clashes in the southern province of Daraa, mostly in the town of Busra al-Harir, and the Tel Shehab area near the border with Jordan.

Syrian rebels are fighting a 21-month-old revolt against President Bashar Assad's regime. Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed in the crisis, which began with pro-democracy protests but has morphed into a civil war.
