Providence Mayor Angel Taveras will have his third director of communications in as many years.
Michael Raia is leaving City Hall on Friday to take a new job as director of media relations and marketing for WGBH, the Boston-based public broadcasting powerhouse, he told colleagues in an email Monday. Raia, a Providence College graduate and Maryland native, joined the mayor?s staff in January.
David Ortiz, who has been Taveras?s press secretary since his term began in 2011, will take over as the mayor?s director of media relations and communications, Raia said. Before joining the city administration Ortiz was director of development at the nonprofit arts group AS220 and a reporter at Providence Business News.
Taveras congratulated Raia in a statement. ?Mike brought a high level of professionalism and communications expertise to the Mayor?s office and played a lead role in developing and executing several of the city?s signature initiatives this year,? the mayor said.
?While I am excited for the opportunity, I will miss working with all of you, most especially David and the rest of the communications office, which ? in my view ? is far and away the most talented and committed communications shop in Rhode Island,? Raia said in the email.
Taveras also praised in Ortiz, saying: ?David is a capable and dedicated member of my senior staff, and I am confident that in his new position he will continue serving the City of Providence with distinction.?
Melissa Withers, the mayor?s first director of communications, left in September 2011 to join the startup accelerator Betaspring. Taveras is gearing up for a possible run for governor in 2014.
