From Sept. 21, 2012 to Jan. 13, 2013, the photographs of Carrie Mae Weems will be the main exhibit at the Frist Museum. These photos explore gender and racial issues, including African-American culture in America. Most of the photos are large and detailed, and the majority of the subjects posed for the pictures.

The photos featured in the exhibit? some of which tell stories and others which describe Weems?s travels?have words to accompany them. Several parts of the exhibit display photographs designed to reexamine common ideas of color and race, while other panels show the photographer?s own family. Some photo compilations are sequences of the same image with the color scheme changed to reflect different meanings. Films of relevant historic events, like the Civil Rights movement, and more recent movies filmed by the photographer of herself and her colleagues add to viewer?s understanding.
