Governor: Alabama Win Crucial to Gingrich Campaign

Republican Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley said on Monday that a win in his state's primary on Tuesday is crucial to GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich?s campaign.

Bentley did not say Gingrich should get out of the race if he loses Alabama, one of two Southern states voting, but he maintained that the South is essential to the former House speaker?s presidential bid.

?I think it?s very important that he wins Alabama,? Bentley said on Fox News. ?If he can?t win the South, he probably cannot win the nation.?

Bentley has not yet endorsed a candidate in the GOP presidential race, but he told Fox it will be hard for either Gingrich or former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum to defeat Mitt Romney at this point.

?Romney is so far ahead in delegates, and he does have a lot of money,? Bentley said. ?It?s going to be difficult for anyone to beat him.?
